The 39mm Formatt Hitech 39mm 7-Stop ND Filteris a solid neutral density filter providing a 7-stop reduction in exposure. This 2.1 density creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing you to photograph with a wider aperture or longer shutter speed than normally required. By slowing your exposure time or increasing your aperture, you are able to control depth of field and convey movement more easily.

The design of this filter has been optimized for use with digital sensors and promote nearly flat attenuation of visible, UV, and infrared light. Due to imaging sensors' greater susceptibility to infrared light, compared to traditional film, color casts can occur when photographing darker subjects that require increased exposure times. This filter provides a high level of neutrality across all three spectrums in order to eliminate color casts and ensure cleaner, truer blacks.

Applied to the outside of the Schott Superwite glass construction is a 15-layer Firecrest multicoating, which helps to minimize reflections and flare in order maintain truer colors and contrast. The multicoating is also scratch resistant and hydrophobic to benefit the overall durability of the filter. The filter is set within a 5.5mm-thick SuperSlim aluminum filter ring, which features front threads for stacking additional filters or attaching a lens cap.

This filter is designed specifically for photography applications. This filter is not suitable for direct solar viewing with the naked eye, including with optical viewfinders.

ND 2.1 filter darkens the image, allowing you to photograph with a longer shutter speed or wider aperture than normally required.

Providing a 7-stop exposure reduction, this filter allows you to control depth of field and convey movement more easily.

Attenuates infrared light, as well as visible and UV wavelengths, to maintain color neutrality and suppress color casts due to increased exposure lengths.

The 15-layer Firecrest coating has been applied directly to the outside of the filter glass by way of a vacuum-formed, hard-coated, electrolytic process. The multicoating is water and scratch resistant for greater overall durability.

Schott Superwite glass promotes maintained image clarity and is set within a 5.5mm-thick SuperSlim aluminum filter ring.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. What are the dimensions of the product closed with filters?

A: The thickness of the filters can be different so that is a variable. The width and length is approximately when folded, 175mm x 90mm.

Q: 2. Will Cokin P Series filters fit in this pouch?

A: Cokin P filter size is 3.3 x 4.7" / 84 x 120 mm and this takes 6- 3.3 x 4.3" / 85 x 110mm filters a little to small

Q: 3. Is this filter stackable? Can the lens cap still fit with this filter on?

A: Urth ND2-400 (1-8.6 Stop) Variable ND Lens Filter (67mm) has a front threaded diameter to attach 67mm lens caps and filters.

Q: 4. Is this compatible with the 24mm Gmaster 1.4 lens?

A: The Aurora-Aperture 67mm Power XND Mark II Variable ND 1.5 to 3.3 Filter (5 to 11-Stop) will attach and work with any 67mm filter thread lens including the Sony FE 24mm f/1.4 GM Lens.

Q: 5. I bought this VND for my sigma 16mm 1.4 lens , will it work with this lens??

A: Yes, the 67mm Urth N2-400 Variable ND filter will work with your Sigma 16mm f/1.4 lens. Due to the design of the filter front ring and the mounting style of your Sigma's bayonet hood, there might be some interference if you try to use the filter and lens hood at the same time.

Q: 6. Does it have hard stops?

A: The Urth ND2-400 (1-8.6 Stop) Variable ND Lens Filter (82mm) features smooth twist adjustments rather than hard stops for each stop. This allows for seamless and precise control over the amount of light reduction. The filter can be easily adjusted to achieve the desired exposure without any abrupt changes or limitations.

Q: 7. Is this filter multi-coated?

A: Yes, the manufacturer has stated that the Urth ND2-400 (1-8.6 Stop) Variable ND Lens Filter (77mm) has an 8-layer nano coating.

Q: 8. Will this work with regular round 77mm filters as well? I would like to put square filters and round filters in the same wallet. Thanks.

A: I would not recommend using round filters in this wallet, as the sleeves are a bit too thin, and may rip. This wallet would also make a good low-cost addition to your camera bag:Tiffen Cordura Six Filter PouchB&H # TIFP6 Mfr # CORD6

Q: 9. Many variable neutral density filters either cause a color shift at darker settings or the dreaded "X-effect" on wide angle lenses. Does this filter suffer from those issues?

A: Any variable ND over 6-7 stops can create the X-effect. And that is the deign and physics of a variable ND filter. And it depends on the lens you are using and the light you are shooting under. As for the color shift almost all have some color shift including the Urth ND2-400 (1-8.6 Stop) Variable ND Lens Filter (77mm). These are higher models of filters, https://bhpho.to/3TSB4JH

Q: 10. hi B&H, Where is this filter made? and what type of optical glass used?

A: According to our records, the Urth ND2-400 (1-8.6 Stop) Variable ND Lens Filter (43mm), BH #URVND24004 is made in China. Please note that this is subject to change at any time.

[39 mm] In my testing of the HiTech filters I shot the images in RAW format with some of my best gear. I attempted to color correct the images with a Passport ColorChecker. I had little luck with the 10 Stop (ProStop), some modest success with 7 stop (ProStop)filter, but did get a very workable image with the 4 stop filter (Standard). The base camera settings were:WB set to ShadeAv set to f/8ISO set to 100My processing included the following steps:1) Eye dropper white balance correction on the neutral square2) Export the image to ColorCheckerr Passport to create a custom camera profile for the image3) Restart LR4 and apply the custom camera profile4) Apply the LR4 preset for Scenic Sharpen5) Export to JPG filesThe 10 Stop:Temp shift from 7,000 to 50,000 (maxed out)Tint shift from +7 to + 114The 7 stop:Temp shift from 7,000 to 13,750Tint shift from +7 t0+81The 4 stop:Temp shift from 7,000 to 8,300Tint shift from +7 to -1The NON-Filtered:Temp Shift from 7,000 to 7,900Tint shift from +7 to +12

[39 mm] I have used this filter for my work for two years and it is perfect. I can use it in my Cokin Z-holder but more often than not just hand hold it. It can easily be combined with a CPL or other ND filter to achieve 4-extra stops which help with waterfalls on sunny days, softening clouds, getting a soft ethereal texture from crashing waves and streams. The nice thing about it is that unlike using very high density screw on ND filters which might make it very difficult to see and focus, especially when using slow f/5.6 lens, you can compose, focus, then use the AF button to lock focus, hold the filter over the lens or other filter, then exposure and click. Very simple and effective. I use this filter a lot. I used to own the extremely expensive SR vari-ND but I sold it for this one because 1) it vignettes at wide angles, 2) does not meter properly due to the physics of the design so you must take test shots and use an iterative approach 3) you can easily over dial in the density which results in a 'cross' in the center where the two polarizers meet. You can't see this effect in the viewfinder since it would be too dark but the result is obvious in the LCD screen. Bottom line, it is much faster to use this filter than a vari-ND and since a vari-ND vignettes at ultra wide angles you end up needing two sets of filters which is just a waste of money. I use this filter a lot along with about 10 other filters which I keep in my two filter pouches that include grad-NDs, CPL, and yes, a screw-on 3-stop ND. No color cast, fast and easy to use compared with any alternative, and very affordable.
