The 46mm Formatt Hitech 46mm 4-Stop ND Filteris a solid neutral density filter providing a 4-stop reduction in exposure. This 1.2 density creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing you to photograph with a wider aperture or longer shutter speed than normally required. By slowing your exposure time or increasing your aperture, you are able to control depth of field and convey movement more easily.

The design of this filter has been optimized for use with digital sensors and promote nearly flat attenuation of visible, UV, and infrared light. Due to imaging sensors' greater susceptibility to infrared light, compared to traditional film, color casts can occur when photographing darker subjects that require increased exposure times. This filter provides a high level of neutrality across all three spectrums in order to eliminate color casts and ensure cleaner, truer blacks.

Applied to the outside of the Schott Superwite glass construction is a 15-layer Firecrest multicoating, which helps to minimize reflections and flare in order maintain truer colors and contrast. The multicoating is also scratch resistant and hydrophobic to benefit the overall durability of the filter. The filter is set within a 5.5mm-thick SuperSlim aluminum filter ring, which features front threads for stacking additional filters or attaching a lens cap.

This filter is designed specifically for photography applications. This filter is not suitable for direct solar viewing with the naked eye, including with optical viewfinders.

ND 1.2 filter darkens the image, allowing you to photograph with a longer shutter speed or wider aperture than normally required.

Providing a 4-stop exposure reduction, this filter allows you to control depth of field and convey movement more easily.

Attenuates infrared light, as well as visible and UV wavelengths, to maintain color neutrality and suppress color casts due to increased exposure lengths.

The 15-layer Firecrest coating has been applied directly to the outside of the filter glass by way of a vacuum-formed, hard-coated, electrolytic process. The multicoating is water and scratch resistant for greater overall durability.

Schott Superwite glass promotes maintained image clarity and is set within a 5.5mm-thick SuperSlim aluminum filter ring.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. will the 46mm filter work in the drop-in slot of the sigma 300-800 lens?

A: The Tiffen Solar ND Filter (46mm, 18-Stop, Special 50th Anniversary Edition) will fit in the drop in slot of the Sigma 300-800mm lens. However, a solar filter needs to be placed on the front of a lens in order to prevent damage to the lens or camera. You can use this MrStarGuy Natural Light Adjustable Solar Filter (145-175mm OD) on the front of your lens: https://bhpho.to/4bCo9pp

Q: 2. Pls confirm that the 46mm filter will fit in the rear drop-in slot of a Nikon Z 800mm? i.e. it's not too thick

A: The Tiffen Solar ND Filter (46mm, 18-Stop, Special 50th Anniversary Edition) is incompatible with the Nikon NIKKOR Z 800mm f/6.3 VR S Lens. Solar filters must be on the front of the lens to be safe. Get the MrStarGuy Adjustable Objective White Light Solar Filter (145-175mm OD), BH #STSGFT043B.

Q: 3. can this filter be used to record the upcoming solar eclipse on my hpx 370 camera?

A: Yes, this is the correct filter for recording a Solar eclipse on your Panasonic HPX 370 camera.

Q: 4. Does this filter have front threads for attaching a screw-on lens hood? I intend to use it with a 600mm mirror lens.

A: Yes, the Tiffen Solar ND Filter (95mm, 18-Stop, Special 50th Anniversary Edition) has 95mm front threads.

Q: 6. Will this fit in my Canon 600mm prime as a drop in filter?

A: Yes, the Tiffen Solar ND Filter (52mm, 18-Stop, Special 50th Anniversary Edition) will fit into the drop in filter of the Canon 600mm f4L.

Q: 7. Why the notice that this solar filter is not safe for solar viewing???

A: The Tiffen Solar ND Filter (95mm, 18-Stop, Special 50th Anniversary Edition) is designed for photographic use and is not intended for use as a viewing filter. It will protect the camera sensor, not the human eye.

Q: 8. Is this filter suitable for the upcoming eclipse 10/14/23?

A: The Tiffen Solar ND Filter (95mm, 18-Stop, Special 50th Anniversary Edition) (B&H# TI95CND54) is absolutely suitable for photographing any annular solar eclipse such as the one on October 14, 2023 (and future such annular solar eclipses), as well as any total solar eclipse such as the one on April 8, 2024 -- and later ones, too, in 2026, 2028, etc. As with any similar photography (rather than optical viewing) style filter, the image would then be viewed using electronic means such as in digital live view mode when using a DSLR (rather than using the optical viewfinder) or with any mirrorless camera using its digital viewfinder or rear digital screen.

Q: 9. Is this suitable for solar photography including eclipse photos? The description says so, but there is a contradictory warning

A: This Tiffen Solar ND Filter is suitable for photographing Solar eclipse, the warning is towards the using the filter as glass to look through with your eyes- that's what the warning is about. You shall never use the photo filters for gazing at the Sun or Solar eclips nor looking through the view finder. Most photographers use time-lapse function for shooting Eclipse. For previewing the Sun you can use Solar Binoculars https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/buy/solar-viewing-binoculars/ci/31714 , for more information please, refer to our Solar Eclipse guide https://www.bhphotovideo.com/explora/photography/tips-and-solutions/8-lessons-learned-when-i-photographed-a-total-solar-eclipse

Q: 10. Is this Solar filter ISO 12312-2 certified?

A: Unfortunately, the Tiffen Solar ND Filter (95mm, 18-Stop, Special 50th Anniversary Edition) is not ISO 12312-2 certified. It should not be used to look directly at the sun with our eyes. It can be used for the camera to take a photo of the sun. Look only in the LCD live view to compose the photo. Do not look in an optical viewfinder.

[0.1 lb] In my testing of the HiTech filters I shot the images in RAW format with some of my best gear. I attempted to color correct the images with a Passport ColorChecker. I had little luck with the 10 Stop (ProStop), some modest success with 7 stop (ProStop)filter, but did get a very workable image with the 4 stop filter (Standard). The base camera settings were:WB set to ShadeAv set to f/8ISO set to 100My processing included the following steps:1) Eye dropper white balance correction on the neutral square2) Export the image to ColorCheckerr Passport to create a custom camera profile for the image3) Restart LR4 and apply the custom camera profile4) Apply the LR4 preset for Scenic Sharpen5) Export to JPG filesThe 10 Stop:Temp shift from 7,000 to 50,000 (maxed out)Tint shift from +7 to + 114The 7 stop:Temp shift from 7,000 to 13,750Tint shift from +7 t0+81The 4 stop:Temp shift from 7,000 to 8,300Tint shift from +7 to -1The NON-Filtered:Temp Shift from 7,000 to 7,900Tint shift from +7 to +12

[46 mm] I have used this filter for my work for two years and it is perfect. I can use it in my Cokin Z-holder but more often than not just hand hold it. It can easily be combined with a CPL or other ND filter to achieve 4-extra stops which help with waterfalls on sunny days, softening clouds, getting a soft ethereal texture from crashing waves and streams. The nice thing about it is that unlike using very high density screw on ND filters which might make it very difficult to see and focus, especially when using slow f/5.6 lens, you can compose, focus, then use the AF button to lock focus, hold the filter over the lens or other filter, then exposure and click. Very simple and effective. I use this filter a lot. I used to own the extremely expensive SR vari-ND but I sold it for this one because 1) it vignettes at wide angles, 2) does not meter properly due to the physics of the design so you must take test shots and use an iterative approach 3) you can easily over dial in the density which results in a 'cross' in the center where the two polarizers meet. You can't see this effect in the viewfinder since it would be too dark but the result is obvious in the LCD screen. Bottom line, it is much faster to use this filter than a vari-ND and since a vari-ND vignettes at ultra wide angles you end up needing two sets of filters which is just a waste of money. I use this filter a lot along with about 10 other filters which I keep in my two filter pouches that include grad-NDs, CPL, and yes, a screw-on 3-stop ND. No color cast, fast and easy to use compared with any alternative, and very affordable.
