Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Same quality as Rokinon DS cine? If these Samyang VDSLR II lenses are identical to the Rokion DC cine lenses, it would be great if there were lens kits and more models, like the Rokinon DS line.

A: The Rokinon line is the highest level of quality of image, finish and features that this lens manufacturer makes. I would imagine in a test, there would be a slight edge with the Rokinons for better contrast and flare control over the Samyangs. And the feature that would be essential on productions with an focus puller is the Dual Side of the Rokinon DS line. However, if you are a single shooter, you could save your money for other stuff.

Q: 2. What's the difference between this one and Rokinon 50? Because the price is 150 off

A: Both this Samyang lens and the Rokinon 50mm T1.5 (B&H # RO5015TC) are made by Samyang Optics in Korea and are both the same exact lens. Rokinon is a private distributor of Samyang here in the US Market. Going with the lesser priced Samyang lens is a great choice.

Q: 3. will this lens fit on my sony nex 5t?

A: Yes, this lens will fit because it is an E-Mount lens and will fit on any E-Mount camera with either a Full Frame or APS-C/Super 35mm sensor.

Q: 4. Could I use this with my sony FS700 without cropping?

A: This lens will produce an image circle that will cover the FS700's sensor without issue.

Q: 5. I do very little video. Will this lens provide quality still photos?

A: While this is designed as a Cinema lens, meaning that it has a de-clicked aperture and gear rings for follow focus systems, you can still take photos with it. Keep in mind though this is a fully manual lens, it will not work with your cameras AF system for still photos.

Q: 6. What is the weather-proofing on this lens? Can this be used in rainy conditions?

A: It is nowhere as well weather proofed as the Canon L lenses for example. It is very well built, but I would avoid getting it wet if possible. At least, I wouldn't be game to get mine wet if I can avoid it.A few drops shouldn't be a problem though.

Q: 7. Is this the MK1 or MK2?

A: This is the version 1 Samyang 12mm T3.1 VDSLR Cine Fisheye Lens for Canon EF Mount.

Q: 8. Will this lens fit my Canon EOS M3?

A: It will fit and work if you get the Canon EF-M Lens Adapter Kit for Canon EF / EF-S Lenses (White Box) B&H # CALAWB.

Q: 9. I have a Nikon D7200 which has autofocus on the camera. When shooting video, I use the autofocus to focus before the shot and then turn it off to video. Will the camera's autofocus work with this lense?

A: no this is NOT an Autofocus lens

Q: 10. What is the diameter of the front element?

A: The front element is approximately 82mm. Keep in mind, the front element isnt threaded for filters and the lenshood is not detachable.

[Sony A] Five stars because of the price point for a 35mm full frame very wide 14mm cinema lens having a long focus throw and de-clicked aperture ring. I use this lens with a Meta Bones Speed Booster on a Sony FS7. It is not a fisheye lens, but there is some horizontal and vertical barrel distortion that can adjusted in post. I would not use this lens for architectural subjects unless the objective is to emphasize the curvature of lines at the edges of the frame. I did not detect any chromatic aberration and the lens was somewhat soft until stopped down to about T5.6 where it clearly resolved every line in my 8x10 Digital Image Flow LLC chart at the center and edges. I plan to use this lens in tight places outdoors, at the sea shore, and where there is cloud activity using time lapse. I recommend using this lens with a high resolution monitor like the Gratical Eye or HD, because the low resolution FS7 monitor displays significant moir which is not in the processed image.

[Sony A] This lens has been better than expected. I needed a cinema-style manual focus lens for video work on my Sony FS5 and this lens is ALWAYS on my camera. Here's my estimation of the good and not-so good of it: The GOOD LIST: First off, the optics on this are simply fantastic. Sharp all over even wide open (which is why www buy lenses like this). In technical areas, it beats almost all lenses except for the Zeiss/ Loxia, but only marginally. It has beautiful bokeh and a very close minimal focal distance. The focus gears are tactile and throw is smooth. I love that there is a significant amount of throw needed to change focal plane, but no so much so that you can't operate handheld. The Not-So-Good: This lens will require you to make some tough compositional choices due to its close minimum focus distance. Bokeh is most pronounced when the subject is at the near end of your focal distance, so if you are buying this to get the big bulbous bokeh in shots, you will need to be close (within 5-7 feet) of your subject. The challenge here is that a 50mm on a Super 35 camera acts as a 75mm lens so you will be taking medium tight to tight shots to achieve the bokeh. If you want to keep your distance and get a 3/4 or wide shout of the subject with bokeh, you might want to look for a lens with a longer minimal focal distance. Overall, a gem of a lens.

[Sony A] I purchased these lenses for our school's GH4s, Canon t2is, and t3is, and bought this one for my Nikon 3100 and 5200. They are very professional quality, with smooth focus and aperture rings, good for run and gun shooting, and sharp optics. The cameras I have are beginner/ intermediate level, but these lenses greatly improve my video quality. I'd say the only negative, is that the sharpest aperture is at 5.6, and the highlights have a small amount of pink, as well as the lens flares. However, other cinema lenses are way beyond the price of these, and these may last you a long time, even if you go professional. Also they make my cameras look really cool.

[Super35/APS-C] This lens has some distortion as you would expect, but the image comes out sharp. I use this lens on a BMPCC 4k with a Metabones XL Speedbooster, which is a great combination.

[T22] As every bit as versatile as you expect your 50mm to be. produces lovely images. the gearing is great for follow focus rigs. I cant say enough about the Samyang series of lenses. So much more than good for the price. you will not be unhappy with this lens.

[Sony A] I shoot live agency band video's I needed a lens that was less wide then my Rokinon 8mm fisheye. I also needed some clarification that this lens would not have the fisheye look even though it's only 2mm longer in focal length. I called B&H and got a TOYALLY helpful gentleman who took the time to verify that this lens would not have the fisheye look... He assured me. I ordered it and the next day it arrived. The day after that, was shoot day. I had to modify (VERY slightly) the opening on my D'Matte box that I have installed on the GlideCam. The shots are sharp as a tack edge to edge (as long as I was in the range I had pre set on the lens) I'm still working on my e-focus puller, but true to wide angles DOF is fairly generous just not as generous as the 8mm fisheye. The 8mm is sharp enough but can use a stop down to sharpen it up a tad. Not so with the 10mm it's a tad faster and wide open its sharper than the 8mm. Folks this is a Cine lens... So I could care less if after blowing up a still photo, from it, (you might find it less than perfect), but for HD video on an APS-C sensor'd 7d mark I.... It's BRILLIANT. Oh and BTW the man at B&H was correct the 10mm did not give a fisheye effect, but of course you get a different type of perspective distortion at the edges as you should expect from an ultra wide angle lens that is flattening out 105 degrees (or so) of coverage. A great and completely different, yet complimentary, look to my fisheye.
