Q: 1. Does this lens cap fit the Zeiss 55 1.8 ? I lost mine..

A: This Sony / Zeiss lens uses a 49mm filter thread and the replacement front lens cap can be found at: https://a href= http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/850518-REG/Sony_ALC_F49S_ALC_F49S_49mm_Front_Lens.html target= _blank www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/850518-REG/Sony_ALC_F49S_ALC_F49S_49mm_Front_Lens.html/a

Q: 2. Does this lens cap fit the Sony-Zeiss SAL2470Z?

A: Yes Sony-Zeiss SAL2470Z is also 77mm filter thread so ZEISS 77mm Front Lens Cap for Otus 55mm f/1.4 should also work.

Q: 3. Will Zeiss ever introduce another Otus lens between the 28mm and 55mm focal length? I am desperate for a 35mm or 40mm Otus!

A: At this time, we do not have information on a new Zeiss Otus lens that is around 35mm. But Zeiss does have an Otus 28mm, ZEISS Otus 28mm f/1.4 ZE Lens for Canon EF BH #ZE2814OC • MFR #2102-182 https://bhpho.to/3BkjMNN .

Q: 4. Does the lens have an aperture ring or is that controlled from the camera body?

A: While you can control the aperture of the Zeiss 55mm f/1.4 Otus Distagon T* Lens for Nikon F Mount on the camera body, the lens does feature an manual aperture ring which allows you to manually control the aperture on older SLR and DSLR cameras.

Q: 5. Does this lens have the focus confirmation chip that will allow the camera to know when focus has been achieved?

A: Yes, the lens features a focus confirmation chip to indicate when the subject is in focus with the camera. - Yossi

Q: 6. Will this work on the Vortex Viper HD 20-60 x 85 spotting scope?

A: No,, i'm sorry but this is meant for a lens with a filter thread of 86mm.

Q: 7. Does this lens have auto-focus capability?

A: No, the Zeiss Otus line of lenses are strictly manual focus lenses, as would be the Zeiss Otus 55mm f/1.4 ZF.2 Lens for Nikon F.

Q: 8. Besides focal length, weight, and price, what are the other differences between the Zeis Otus 55 and the Zeis Milvus 50? Specifically, what are the optical considerations? And are there any issues with adapting to Sony NEX cameras like the FS700 and F7?

A: Look at the 14 minute video attached/linked in the overview section. The Zeiss Rep' explains the difference between Zeiss' Milvus and Otus lenses. He explains the optical design for the Otus in plain, simple terms.

Q: 9. Hello,I am concerned about how a person determines if a subject is in focus or not. Will my focusing green dot on my Nikon D610 work with this lens? Do I have to look at the image and determine focus by the picture quality. I have tried magnifying eyepieces and my eyesight will not allow me to use them. Thanks in advance.Bill

A: When the lens is stopped down the dot indicating that focus is achieved works fine. When working at a shallow depth of field, live view or a zacuto z pro finder helps with focus. If using live view a helpful hint I found on the internet is to program the center button of the multiselector (option f2 in the custom settings on a D-810 so that live view will immediately go to zoom mode when this button is pushed when you're in live view. This button can also be programed to zoom during playback to quickly check focus. You can program it for 50%, 100%, or200% magnification and it zooms centered on the site of your focus point. On a sunny day a hoodman is very useful. It's much smaller than a zacuto and can be quickly placed over the review screen to check exposure or focus in the sun when you can't see the liveview screen well. If relieing on the in camera focus dot for focusing with a narrow depth of field, there is quite a distance that the lens focus ring can be moved and yet still indicate that the camera thinks you are in focus. I did some test shots and I found that sometimes even though I thought I turned the focus ring until it was about in the center of where focus was indicated when coming into and out of focus as the ring was turned, the picture sometimes was still slightly out of focus. I found that if I started focusing in front of my desired site and turned the focus ring until the camera just indicated in focus I often achieved good focus, but when I began focusing behind the subject and turned the focus ring until the camera indicated in focus then the image was always fuzzy. This also happens with my other camera, a D700.

Q: 10. Will this fit my Zeiss Diascope 85 FL? The factory Zeiss lens cap I am replacing is marked Carl Zeiss 86mm

A: No

[Snap-On] This is my third Zeiss, second Otus, for my Nikon D810A. The 85/1.4 arrives tomorrow. I recently took this lens, the 28/1.4, the Milvus 15, and several Nikon and Sigma lenses, p.us an additional D810 body and tripods to the Maldives. Schlepping that much weight was not trivial, but easily worth it. I ended up using the 55 more than any of the other lenses. I had forgotten how challenging and liberating it is to see the world through a normal focal length. But other than that, there is nothing normal about this lens. As other reviewers have noted, the images OOTC look like they have already been processed. Color, clarity, and contrast produce a natural 3D effect. I have included two images I shot handheld of a small about -inch long crag next to a pool. Sun was overhead around midday, so light was flat and not flattering. My focus here is not very good, but it's good enough to illustrate the point. Zero processing other than the crop, and the JPEG quality compression. The crop is approximately 3:1, and the amount of detail is just amazing. And this is with significant image compression to get the pics small enough to upload here. Shot was 1/1250 at 4.5. In RAW, on a 4K iMac, these are something else. The cons about these lenses are well-known: size, weight, expense. Makes it a pretty easy decision for most. For me, although difficult to transport, I cannot imagine leaving any of these lenses home.

[Front] I'm the lucky one for owning this gem since this February. The image quality is second to none. I was not a lover of normal lenses before, but now I definitely am. The size of this lens doesn't bother me at all(I only used other ZF lenses in the past years), and should not bother others who were used to pro zoom lenses. However, the cosmetic details are not at the same level. Just out of the box, there's a scratch on the lens cap. The marking filling of the depth of field was uneven due to some dust particles. The most obvious defect was a small area(about 0.5 x 0.5cm) of the lens shade contaminated by white painting(though I could clean it just by nail). Maybe I'm just nitpicking, but I do expect a better quality control and detail from this premium price. No doubt this lens deserves five stars for its optical performance. But I wound minus half a star just because its cosmetic defects.

[77 mm] Despite seeing the great lab testing results and numerous stellar reviews on this lens, I still took a long time deciding to buy it..but I'm so glad I did. It arrived on a a flat, cloudy day, so it was a good situation for running it thru some tough photographic experiments in my yard. I focused on both natural and man-made objects, at varying distances, using 10 different apertures and a variety of ISO settings. When later viewing the images on my computer, I could only shake my head in wonder. What superb sharpness, color rendering and general image quality! I cannot wait to travel with the Otus 55mm and see what it can do under more ideal conditions. In short, it is easily the finest lens I have ever used, (including the Canon 300 2.8L and the Zeiss 100mm Makro).

[0.06 lb] This lens is amazing. After shooting it for a week the photos from other pro Nikon lenses look simply not as great. The quality and details are stunning. Yes, it's big, it's heavy, it's manual and quite expensive, but the picture quality and look is worth this spend. Using it together with my d810 I'm very close to medium format.

[Plastic] Using these on my Sony GM glass. Esthetically, these are much better than Sony's caps. Ergonomically, these are inferior to Sony.

[Front] Everything about this lens is as advertised. If you know what you want to do with this lens and can cope with its drawbacks (manual focus, bulky, heavy, significant 270-turning radius), you will find no finer 35MM lens. It simply blows away Nikon's best--across the board. In the first shoot that I used it, I was able to deploy it in a situation where I would normally use the 70-200 2.8. At about 40 feet from the subjects, it captured greater resolution, superb color rendition and next to zero chromatic aberration. If you don't believe me, go to the B+H counter and take one demo shot with it. Stunning.

[Snap-On] Upon delivery, I did my usual lens protocol (just to be sure all was A-OK), and took the new Otus out to my backyard. It was a very dark, flat, overcast fall day. I took a variety of shots at varying distances. I ranged between using 1.4 and 8.0 apertures, never going more than 400 iso, and most often 100 iso. I shot both material objects and plant life, all handheld. Viewing these images later on my computer, caused me to to just shake my head in wonder. Every single one was crisp, artful, with beautifully rendered colors, and all had that Zeiss Otus magic. I cannot yet imagine what a tripod-mounted, good weather day will yield with this lens, but I'm pretty excited thinking about it. I deliberated a long time before making this special purchase. I'm so glad that it lived up to, and surpassed, my very high expectations. Fantastic!
