Combining long reach and a portable form factor, the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 300mm f/4E Lensfrom Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 300mm f/4E Lensis a prime telephoto that features a unique Phase Fresnel element to greatly reduce the size and weight compared to other 300mm lenses. This element, along with one extra-low dispersion glass element, also helps to greatly reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing for improved clarity and color accuracy. Individual elements also feature both Nano Crystal and Super Integrated Coatings to suppress flare and ghosting, as well as a protective fluorine coating to guard the optical system from dust and moisture.

Benefitting the optical design, the lens also features a Silent Wave Motor AF system that produces fast, near-silent focusing performance to suit both stills shooting and movie recording, and which can instantly be manually overridden by simply turning the focus ring. Further contributing to photographing in fast-paced situations and difficult lighting, VR (Vibration Reduction) image stabilization compensates for the effects of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting. Additionally, an electromagnetic aperture mechanism is integrated into the lens design to provide greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with faster continuous shooting rates.

Telephoto prime designed for use with FX-format Nikon F-mount cameras, this lens is also compatible with DX models where it will provide a 450mm equivalent focal length.

One Phase Fresnel element and one extra-low dispersion lens element work to greatly reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing; improve overall image sharpness, clarity, and color fidelity; and help to minimize the overall weight of the lens.

A Nano Crystal Coat, along with a Super Integrated Coating, has been applied to lens elements to minimize surface and internal reflections for a marked reduction in lens flare and ghosting.

Vibration Reduction image stabilization helps to reduce the appearance of camera shake by 4.5 stops, benefiting this lens's use in low-light conditions. Additionally, a designated Sport Mode is well-suited to working in fast-paced conditions and a Tripod Mode helps to suppress subtle ground vibrations when working atop a support system.

Silent Wave Motor affords quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override. An internal focusing design is also used, where only the internal lens groups are moved during focusing, to maintain the overall length of the lens during use and to promote faster focusing speeds.

Fluorine-coated front element affords protection to the optical system.

Specialized electromagnetic aperture mechanism provides greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with fast continuous shooting rates.

Q: 1. I would like to now if the d5500 is good with the new 300mm f4 ore are there a camera who are better for around the same price ore less than the d5500?

A: the nikkor 300mm will work great with the d5500. if you need a little more reach, try the Nikon 1.4 teleconverter with it, they work great together for that little extra reach. there is no need to upgrade your d5500, but if you ever decide to, the d7200 is a great camera with better control of aperture, shutter speed and ISO.

Q: 2. I know this was originally scheduled to be released on Feb 5. Any idea when you might be shipping?

Q: 3. Various reviews and write-ups have identified possible issues with the PF element handling background specular highlights (some sample images show red/green tinted spots). I frequently photograph waterfowl, so reflections off water cannot always be avoided. Is this truly an issue with the lens? Or are the reviewers just really good at setting up a worst case scenario?

A: The 300mm PF is a spectacular lens. I took it on a couple of trips to Trinidad and Ecuador and it was fantastic. It is sharp and light. I usually shoot with a 600mm f4 or a 400mm f2.8, and while the 300mm PF f4 is not quite in their league, it is very sharp. I have yet to encounter any problems with specular highlights. Buy the lens, for hand held with a crop body it is unbeatable. Oh, it takes the 1.4 TC III very well.

Q: 4. Will this lens accept a Lens Collar/or the Nikon - RT-1 Tripod Mount Ring For 70-200mm f/4G Lens?If not, is there a Lens Collar that IS compatible/recommended?

A: Yes, the Nikon RT-1 Tripod Mount Ring For 70-200mm f/4G Lens (BH #NIRT1) is the correct collar for the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 300mm f/4E PF ED VR Lens.

Q: 5. Hey i Will ask of the new nikon 300mm f4 is charger and better then the Nikon 200-500mm f5.6 on the Nikon d5500?

A: I do not have any experience with the 200-500 lens. I can tell you that the 300 is an excellent lens. It is sharp, small, and lightweight. It works well with a 1.7x or 2.0x teleconverter also. I believe it is significantly more expensive than the 200-500. Unless you have another longer lens, the 200-500 looks like a great value even though it is one stop slower. Good luck with your choice.

Q: 6. Will this lens work with the Nikon D700 camera? What, if any, are it's limitations with the D700?

A: I thought it worked quite well on my D700. I have quite a few pics with this combo on my Flickr page (skeptiq_1) if you would like to see the results.

Q: 7. I have the older AF 80-200 f/2.8D Lens. Great sharp lens. Would it be worthwhile to upgrade to the 300mm f/4 ?

A: I've successfully added a 1.4X teleconverter to my 300mm/f4. Not sure that could be done on the zoom lens.

Q: 8. I have the 300 f4D; planning on getting this 300f4E tonight... will the Teleconverter TC-20E111 work correctly? Anyone have preferences between the 810; 610; or 7100 with this lens? Other than FX and DX size?

A: I'm sure the TC will work fine. I have the 750 and the TC1.4 and just got back from Costa Rica. My pics with this combo are tack sharp and was usually using ISO 1600-3200 in the dark jungle. My main question back to you would be using a TC 20 you might see some image degradation. For reach you might be better off with a D7100 and a lower level TC

Q: 10. Is this lens compatible with the Nikon F100 camera?

A: It's going to be compatible with the Nikon F100. However you may be unable to change the aperture due to this lens not having an aperture ring. You'll be shooting wide open at f/4 at all times using this lens.

[Nikon F] I have been using this lens for about six months on a D800 and, at times, on a D300; the serial number is over 205101. My primary use has been outdoors for nature photography. Performance is as hoped. It's light weight and easily managed. Shots are great. The trick is that it is optically 300mm and needs to be handled as you might handle a 3OO mm lens. MPK61's review below seems to reflect an experience close to mine. No, this lens doesn't produce images as well as my tripod mounted 600mm f/4....but It didn't cost close to $10,000 and can be easily grabbed from camera bag or carried at my hip while I lug the big glass around. The accompanying image was hand-held with VR on as follows: D800, AF-S Nikkor 300mm f/4E PF ED VR; f/4, 1/100s, 400 ISO. 5

[8° 10'] I was really hesitant about this lens at first after hearing of the issues with the VR on the D800 and D810 model cameras. However, after speaking with a Nikon rep about the specifics I learned that the issue was in the software of the lens and reacted only to these particular models. So, that meant that it wasn't an issue with the lens itself. I held off on buying it until a friend of mine who purchased the lens loaned it to me for a week. At that point I was sold! This lens operates flawlessly with my D750 and I couldn't be happier with it. It is a machine and worth the money at twice the price. I have used the Nikon 300mm F/2.8 and while it is an incredible piece of glass in my opinion it lacks the portability that the F/4 PF ED VR version offers. The new F/4 VR is much more compact and lightweight. The focus is incredibly fast and this lens is TACK SHARP! I have used for wildlife, portrait, sports and even some macro photography and couldn't be happier with the results across the board. If you are looking for a prime telephoto lens and want a huge bang-for-your-buck, this lens is the way to go. 5

[0.24x] This is an amazing lens. I can carry it around all day with no problem . . . not bad for a 300mm lens. I have used it for everything from outdoor portraits to high speed action and the results are impressive. There isn't much this lens can't do. I have not had any focus issues/blurring at any shutter speed on my D700. Best of all I never need to use a tripod with it. Bottom line: this lens allows me to get quality images in situations that simply weren't possible before. In my opinion, it truly is a game-changer! 5

[8° 10'] I received a copy of this lens a few weeks ago, and, after using it on my Nikon D750 I found (like many others) that images with exposures in the 1/100-1/200 range were blurry when done with Nikon's VR system enabled. I exchanged that copy of the lens for another (thanks to B&H, this was an easy process). When the new copy arrived, I found that it did exactly the same ... So, why a 5-star rating? The reason is that Nikon came out with an update on the D750 firmware which fixed the issue for me, just a few days after I received the second copy of the lens. This problem is not really an issue with this particular lens, but seems to be caused or aggravated by their cameras, perhaps related to mirror shock or other issues. The good aspect is that this can apparently be effectively fixed with a firmware update. I have now used this lens extensively - it is a joy to use (the low eight and small size is simply amazing), and the images it generates are outstanding, both in terms of sharpness of in-focus objects, and in terms of bokeh. The VR is very effective, indeed. 5

[77 mm (Front)] I am a full time pro with 30 years experience. I currently shoot with Nikon, but when digital came into the picture, shot with Canon for almost 5 years (2003-2007). My copy of this lens is outstanding. Three reasons why I am totally psyched with this lens. 1) Very lightweight 2) Sharp @f/4.0 and 3) Incredibly close focussing capability. While not a micro lens, when focussed at it's min distance (4'6), the field of view is approximately 3 x 5 inches. To me, this is incredibly useful. While others have reported VR issues at shutter speeds between 1/30 - 1/160, my copy displays zero image degradation at those or any speeds. Build quality appears to be great. At the date of this review, May 2, 2015, I've owned this lens for 5 days and have make hundreds of images and the lens has been a valuable tool. Should anything change, I'll update. 5

[Autofocus] Just received this lens from B&H last week and went about testing it extensively given the previously noted issues. Wow! First tested the VR on a Nikon D810 and found it to be working perfectly without the earlier described issues. Tested quite a bit at shutter speeds from 1/20 to 1/200 and it worked amazingly well. Ditto for other shutter speeds above 1/200. Very sharp hand held images down to 1/20 second! Next onto a tripod for focus testing and found it to be spot on and required no fine tuning. Then out into the world with distant objects, birds in flight, moving targets such as cyclists, etc, and it functioned superbly. Images were super sharp at all apertures throughout the frame with very little chromatic aberration and distortion. The quality of the bokeh was quite good even considering the fresnel elements. Finally, the unbelievable light weight of this lens made hand holding as easy as with a 24-70mm. No need for a tripod at all. Glad I wasn't an early purchaser given the VR issues but it seems those are resolved. Great addition to the line-up! 5

[300mm] I also have the Nikon 80-400 lens that's nice and sharp but somewhat heavy on my Nikon 750 and Nikon 7200. I wanted something for kayaking or hiking and this lens is perfect. I lose 100mm but with the Nikon1.4 III teleconverter, I'm at 420mm (or 630mm with 7200) so basically the same as the 80-400. I've paired it with the 1.7 teleconverter and still very sharp. I do feel it's sharper than my zoom which it should be and much much lighter.. I actually haven't used the zoom since I got this lens. 5

[Full-Frame] I have used both the predecessor 300mm f4 non VR and the 300mm f2.8 VR with my D810 and D4s and for each they served their purpose. The 300 2.8 was a magnificent lens, tack sharp, and worked with all 3 converters but was heavy. I do a lot of waterfowl and wildlife photography which can involve crawling around on my belly and laying in muddy swampy areas for hours. For me the 300 2.8 vs. 300 f4 non VR was an easy choice...just suck it up and carry the larger lens. At least until the new PF VR came out. Sure it is more expensive than its predecessor but for me it allows much more mobility for my type of shooting. The lens works as well as the 300 2.8 with teleconverters with the TC20 being a bit slower on auto focus but acceptable. The image quality is stunning. For one stop loss of light I will gladly sacrifice 6 extra pounds of lens.As an added benefit with the smaller size it meets the 8 or smaller lens requirement at Minute Maid park here in Houston so I can take it the ballpark and stick a TC in my pocket.Overall I have been very impressed. 5
