The 135mm T1.5 AS UMC VDSLR II Lens for Sony E-Mount from Samyang is a manual focus prime lens. It provides a maximum aperture of T2.2 for effective low light capture and shallow depth of field control and a 9 blade iris for attractive bokeh. Optimized for cinema and video applications, the focus and aperture control rings are outfitted with industry standard gearing, which provides an interface for working with a traditional follow focus. The aperture control ring has also been de-clicked, which enables smooth iris pulls. In addition, bright aperture and distance markings are printed on the lens barrel facing laterally to facilitate easier control by a focus puller. The lens has a minimum focus distance of 2.6'. Internal focusing minimizes the effects of focus breathing, and the lens is composed of 11 elements in 7 groups. A lens multi-coating helps to improve light transmission reducing flare and ghosting. The filter thread diameter for attaching sunshades or filter rings is 77mm.

Each of the VDSLR II lenses will offer the same position of their geared focus and aperture rings so that follow focus and other rig accessories won't need re-adjustment when swapping lenses. Also, each lens is tested to be color matched with the other lenses in the series and provide the same color and contrast when shooting video, allowing you to add lenses to your kit over time without worrying about the color of your image changing significantly when swapping lenses. As an aid to focus pullers, the lenses are marked with focusing scales on each side of the barrel for easier adjustment from both sides of the camera.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Is this the same lens as Rokinon?

A: Rokinon and Samyang lenses are manufactured in the same factory.

Q: 2. "APS-C Coverage" means it wil produce vignetting on a Full Frame sensor or means that the mount is EF-S?

A: That is correct. This lens is only able to cover an APS-C sized sensor. It is not compatible with a Full Frame camera and will give you substantial vignetting.

Q: 3. what does vdslr stand for and mean?

A: This lens is a video lens. Therefore the VDSLR stands for Video Digital Single Lens Reflex.

Q: 4. will this lens fit my canon eos rebel?

A: The Samyang 10mm T3.1 VDSLR Lens with Canon EOS Mount is designed for use on a Canon APS-C camera like the Rebel. It will work perfectly.

Q: 5. Will this lens fit and work with my Nikon D5200 ?

A: Yes it will. It is a full crame lens. It will work as 50mm on fx bodies and as 75mm on dx bodies such as d5200. Note that the version t1.5 is a cinematography lens. If you need it for photography you should get f1.2 version.

Q: 6. How does this compare to the 50mm f 1.4 lens (SY50M-E) besides the unclicked aperture?

A: If you are doing video and particularly if you have a focus puller, you want this lens. Much needed features of a video lens besides the de-clicked aperture is the geared rings for a mechanical interface with manual or motorized controls plus horizontal focus and aperture scales for easy reading by the camera assistant. The 50mm f 1.4 lens (SY50M-E) is a still photo lens thus does not need these features.

Q: 7. I do very little video. Will this lens provide quality still photos?

A: While this is designed as a Cinema lens, meaning that it has a de-clicked aperture and gear rings for follow focus systems, you can still take photos with it. Keep in mind though this is a fully manual lens, it will not work with your cameras AF system for still photos.

Q: 8. is it compatible with 70d?

A: The Samyang 50mm T1.5 VDSLR AS UMC Lens for Canon EF Mount is perfectly compatible with the 70D. Be aware this gives on a APS-C sensor camera a slightly telephoto perspective along with being manual aperture and focus only.

Q: 9. How bad is the focus breathing on this? I have the 85mm and it's pretty heavy.

A: On this Rokinon 135mm Cine DS model, the breathing is minimized.

Q: 10. Same quality as Rokinon DS cine? If these Samyang VDSLR II lenses are identical to the Rokion DC cine lenses, it would be great if there were lens kits and more models, like the Rokinon DS line.

A: The Rokinon line is the highest level of quality of image, finish and features that this lens manufacturer makes. I would imagine in a test, there would be a slight edge with the Rokinons for better contrast and flare control over the Samyangs. And the feature that would be essential on productions with an focus puller is the Dual Side of the Rokinon DS line. However, if you are a single shooter, you could save your money for other stuff.

[2.47 lb] It is almost as sharp wide open edge to edge as it is at T5.6. Lens is good for shooting 8k full frame on my Canon 5Dsr from T2.2 to T11 and is outstanding at T5.6 and 8. Significant vignette on full frame (24x36mm) sensors wide open improves tremendously when stopping down to T2.8. On my GH5 vignette isn't a problem at any aperture due to the MFT crop factor.

[T2.2] This lens has been better than expected. I needed a cinema-style manual focus lens for video work on my Sony FS5 and this lens is ALWAYS on my camera. Here's my estimation of the good and not-so good of it: The GOOD LIST: First off, the optics on this are simply fantastic. Sharp all over even wide open (which is why www buy lenses like this). In technical areas, it beats almost all lenses except for the Zeiss/ Loxia, but only marginally. It has beautiful bokeh and a very close minimal focal distance. The focus gears are tactile and throw is smooth. I love that there is a significant amount of throw needed to change focal plane, but no so much so that you can't operate handheld. The Not-So-Good: This lens will require you to make some tough compositional choices due to its close minimum focus distance. Bokeh is most pronounced when the subject is at the near end of your focal distance, so if you are buying this to get the big bulbous bokeh in shots, you will need to be close (within 5-7 feet) of your subject. The challenge here is that a 50mm on a Super 35 camera acts as a 75mm lens so you will be taking medium tight to tight shots to achieve the bokeh. If you want to keep your distance and get a 3/4 or wide shout of the subject with bokeh, you might want to look for a lens with a longer minimal focal distance. Overall, a gem of a lens.

[Full Frame] This lens is actually really really sharp and creates lovely and creamy images! I used to miss not having a 70-200 f2.8 a lot more before I purchased this lens.
