Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Does the motor step (Is it jerky) at very slow speeds or is it rock solid at all speeds?

A: Hi Vince - thanks for asking! Since 3.0 (released last year) the microRemote is exceptionally smooth at all speeds. the 3.0 update doubled the resolution (FYI new versions are shipping with 3.0 but it's also a free firmware update to all previous remote customers!) - hope that helps

Q: 2. is this rig compatible with Gh4 with lumix 12-35 lens ?

A: This can be compatible with any camera and lens. The lens require a focus ring with a .8 pitch lens gear (or this can be added to a DSLR lens additionally). You will need a 15mm based rig to mount these components, and most importantly a power source that outputs DC power such as a V-Mount or Gold Mount battery and battery plate with a D-Tap output.

Q: 3. Will I be able to use the start / stop function on the a7S II? If so, what cable will I need? The Micro-D HDMI output is occupied by an Atomos Shogun, if that has anything to do with it.

A: Remote video start/stop for DSLRs and Mirrorless cameras generally does not exist. The issue is that for most cameras, which includes the a7S II, the video button is on an separate, non-connected circuit and cannot be activated except by a manual press of the button. Even the Sony WiFi app cannot activate video recording. I am afraid that we will have to wait for a model change before we can start using the MicroRemote on a a7 camera.

Q: 4. I see that the basestation is wireless ready , does that mean it will connect and work with the handheld wireless remote?

A: Hi Anthony - yes that is correct. just add this hand unit (you can purchase it later) and its ready for wireless:a href= http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1014379-REG/redrock_micro_3_114_0001_microremote_handheld_wireless_focus.html target= _blank http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1014379-REG/redrock_micro_3_114_0001_microremote_handheld_wireless_focus.html/aplease note the picture of the hand unit is outdated - the new version is slimmer and smaller

Q: 5. Looking to use this with Cinema glass on a Sony A7s I. Is there a start stop cable for the Sony a7s to trigger direct from the remote?

A: Redrock wants you to contact them regarding custom cables. support@redrockmicro.com.

Q: 6. Hello. Can you tell me the size of the box containing the Follow Focus Redrock microRemote Wireless Bundle ?thank you

A: The size of this products box is 14.1 L x 10.2 W x 6.9 H.

Q: 7. Do you still need a battery pack of some kind to power it? If so what's the cheapest and lightest battery option?

A: Hi Dane - yes the microRemote does require power from an external source. You have a lot of options hereIf you are using an existing gimbal, you can often tap into the power provided from the gimbal's lipo battery (make sure you have the correct cable there). DJI, Freefly, and Letus are among the options thereif you need a standalone battery, you can use any p-tap compatible 12-14.4v battery. We often recommend switronix powerBase (there are many options, make sure to choose the one that is right for you) or a swit battery for sony camcorders with built-in p-tap like this one a href= http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1027696-REG/swit_s_8u63_li_ion_rechargeable_battery.html target= _blank http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1027696-REG/swit_s_8u63_li_ion_rechargeable_battery.html/ayou can also ask any BH representative for a battery solution that is 12-18vDC, has a built-in p-tap battery source, and does not require a plate to use. Hope that helps

Q: 8. can i use this on a devin graham glidecam and a jib? also, can you reccomend the kind of cables i need if i were to use this on a 8ft jib. thanks

A: Hi Divine - yes, it should work fine! we don't have direct experience with the glidecam, but many customers use it with steadicam, which works the same. Remember you'll need a small lightweight battery, check out our new lp-e6 battery adapter, which is about to be released (you will want to ask for part number 2-178-0001)this bundle is great for that. For a jib you'll want a longer cable, which we can make to size, but you will need to contact us at redrock micro direct for that cable. Everything else is available here.

Q: 9. What is the difference between this remote and the older style?

A: For help comparing two specific products feel free to email us directly with links to both products at askbh@bhphoto.com. We should be better able to assist you from there.

Q: 10. Would one be able to use two of these on a digital cine lens? One to control the Iris and one to control the Focus?

A: Hi 490yes you can do that, it's a great idea too! just get two setups and use one for focus and one for iris. Just make sure they are cine style gearing 0.8

[12" / 30.5 cm] I've worked with other gimbals before and I really liked the workflow of stabilized footage but when I tried the Ronin S, Man it changed the way my footage looked. Its just perfect !! The size, the material is just so sturdy, it feels good handling it, honestly I cant recommend it enough. I wished I had bought it long time ago. B&H was good and easy with the whole check out process and could not been easier. Go get your self one if you haven't got one yet.

[0.06 lb] Set-up with a 5D and an 85L... added an H1 on top, and it keeps everything shake free. It's a bit heavy for a long day, but if you're working to catch clips or any number of the other uses for this gimbal you're not going to hit that limit. The whole set up seems some how intimidating to people as I get a lot more "What are you recording" and side eye with this rig than I do with the same set up not on the gimbal.

The case that comes with the gimbal is too big and bulky, but that's hopefully not why you're buying this. The focus knob compatibility is much wider than initially announced already and while the accessories specifically for the Ronin S don't exist yet, there are some DJI ecosystem accessories that already do. DJI are working quickly to expand the available controls but it already works with the major Canon cameras.

There *IS* a manual folks! It's in the bottom of the box that encloses the case. I guess most people don't look carefully.

Charging for the first time was a bit of a difficulty... the battery grip and charging block didn't recognize the power at the end of an extension cord. Worked right away when I plugged it directly in to the wall. First time I powered up I thought I had done something wrong as well since it didn't seem to activate the motors... nope... it was working just fine, just paused by default.

[12" / 30.5 cm] The Ronin S does everything! If you you want smooth shots, time lapses or just unique footage this is so worth your investment.

[12" / 30.5 cm] I've put my C100 on this gimbal and it flies just fine when properly balanced. DJI has added a lot of really valuable features to the app which effectively make this gimbal so much more than a regular gimbal.

[2-pin LEMO] Been an indie filmmaker for 14 years and I'm amazed at what we can do now with a $500 gimbal. The Ronin s is great. Easy enough to use and figure out if you're accustomed to training on new gear but there still is a learning curve. Take a few days with it prior to production, and if you're using a Black Magic 4 or 6k, get an offset plate for mounting.

[2 oz / 57 g] I have no experience with gimbals and was a little concerned about purchasing the Ronin-S as my first, especially since I have an older camera (Canon EOS 70D). But the gimbal was very easy to figure out and the instructional videos were very helpful for more advanced features. Even as a complete amateur to film, I can’t go without this gimbal.

[D-Tap] Amazing piece of gear. Definitely a learning curve, but the videos online help you out. WARNING! If you have a Canon 80D, you have to upgrade the firmware and buy a connecting cable to get certain functions to work. After that - smooth sailing. Be ready to work out your biceps too.

[D-Tap] Using the Ronin-S with primarily Sony A7 series cameras and various lenses. Great results in a variety of settings including: man-on-the-street interviews, b-roll acquisition, tracking (motor vehicles), etc.

The only criticism I would direct is at training and support; but I give the company a pass as this is a very new product.

Biggest frustration to date is trying to locate and purchase the "accessory hot-shoe stabilizer arm" - it's listed in the manual, but so far DJI Sales, Service, and Support staff have been unable to tell me if it's available for sale, where, and how much. Underwhelmed, to say the least. This is a necessary accessory if you plan to put the Ronin-S into a 'wind' event situation over 20mph - like a car-to-car tracking shot.

[12" / 30.5 cm] I bought the Ronin-S for mobile, cinematic, and smooth shots for weddings. My Canon Rebel T7i isn't compatible (yet) but still works great for a one-handed stabilizer. Plus my camera has touch-screen focus so the pull focus option isn't essential for my need. Takes about 10 minutes to transition from my tripod plate to the Ronin plate, but I'm in the market for a new tripod anyways so I'll just buy one that's compatible.
