The Tiffen 4x4" Decamired Red 3 Warming Filter- For those who want a sure-fire way of getting accurate color temperature readings, the decamired system is the way to go. Using this formula, you can transpose temperatures from one point to another easily and quickly. This system is also useful when you wish to bring a certain amount of creativity to color photography.

Applications include keeping color temperature constant during the course of the day and producing the effect of different times of day. Available in two series, reddish filters that warm the light and bluish filters that cool the light. Each series contains 4 densities: 1.5, 3, 6, and 12. Filters in the same series can be combined.

Decamired filters are designed to more easily handle unusual color temperature variations than the previously mentioned filters. Available in increments of both a red and a blue series, Decamired filters can be readily combined to create almost any required correction. In measuring the color temperature of the light source, and comparing it to that for which the film was designed, we can predict the required filtration fairly well.

A filter that produces a color temperature change of 100K at 3400K will produce a change of 1000K at 10,000K. This is because the filter relates to a visual scale of color. It will always produce the same visible difference. A color change of 100K at the higher temperature would hardly be noticed.

Calculations
To use this concept, subtract the mired value of the light source from that of the film. If the answer is positive, you need a reddish filter; if negative, use a bluish filter. Mired-coordinated filters are termed as decamireds. Mired value divided by ten yields decamireds. The 60 mired shifts, above, would be produced by an R6 filter, where the higher values were that of the lighting.

Sets of such filters generally come in values of 1.5, 3, 6, and 12 decamireds in both B (bluish) and R (reddish) colors. These numbers are additive; that is, a pair of R3's produces an R6. An R6 plus a B6 cancel each other out to produce a neutral gray.

The decamired system has an advantage over the Kelvin system in that the Kelvin scale is not linear

Decamired readings provide more accurate/controllable readings than Kelvin

The difference between the Mired value of the film and the Mired value of the light is the Mired value of the correction filter that correctly tailors the light to the film

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Just got this and the box itself is horizontally off next to the rail mount. When sitting on perfectly leveled rods it sits to the left making the lens sit wrong too. Anyone else got this issue? Is there any leveling adjustment I can do myself? Thanks.

A: Most advanced matte boxes, such as this one, have various adjustments. It looks as though if you loosen the silver handles next to the blue bracket on the camera right side of the mattebox, you should be able to level it properly.

Q: 2. Can the height be adjusted for this so it's versatile for different rigs/cameras?

A: You can adjust the height on this rig by about an inch. If you look at the front, on the left side you can see two little knobs with silver poles sticking out. You loosen those and the entire front of the unit will slide up and down along tracks. Tighten those knobs again to lock it in place.

Q: 3. Can this matte box be adapted for 19mm rods?

A: For that you would need to get a 19mm Bridge Plate to 15mm Mini Adapter, such as BH #MOBPA for Movcam. https://bhpho.to/3051blx

Q: 4. This can work with lens SIGMA 18,35mm ? Blackmajick 6K ? All of my lens it's Sigma's! Let me know plz

A: The Tilta 4x4" Lightweight Matte Box will work with any lenses that are 114mm or less in diameter.

Q: 5. Can this filter work with a film camera - not video??

A: Yes, the Tiffen 43mm #25 Red filter can work with film cameras.

Q: 6. Will this fit on a fujinon ha13x4.5berm-m48 2/3?

A: The Fujinon 13x4.5BERM has a 95mm front. The Tilta comes with 80, 95, and 110mm Diameter Lens Adapters. Use the 95mm to clamp-on the matte box. I would suggest using a 15mm LWS for this mattebox for easier use.

Q: 7. Does this filter fit a hasselblad 60mm cf t lens? (V series camera)

A: My filter was purchased for use on a Nikon FM which requires a 52 mm lens cap. Suggest you contact either Hasselblad or Tiffen Filters.

Q: 8. I have a Digital Bolex on a zacuto recoil and a titla ff, will this work with it?

A: Adan, we don't have those to try in-house, but, so long as your equipment is compatible with 15mm LWS, you should be good to go!

Q: 9. Can I use the clamp on to a 114mm Xeen Lens?

A: 114mm is the maximum lens diameter that can fit into this matte box.

Q: 10. Will the clamp work for lenses with 114mm diameter?

A: 114mm is the maximum lens diameter that can fit into this matte box.

[6 x 6 x 1.1"] I have not had a chance to use enough myself but have seen results by other photographers and was recommended by my photo instructor friend

[6 x 6 x 1.1"] I bought these so I could make my own filters for my Mamiya RZ67 Fish Eye Lens. Choose these because I wanted the higher quality.

[Decamired Red 3] I'm definitely going to be using this for a lot of filming. Real great effect on skin tones, and it gives a nice pink value if used outside and if you set your color temperature a little under the norm. Good construction that you've come to expect from Tiffen. I'll probably buy the rectangular version of this filter, if they've got one.

[Decamired Red 3] I mostly purchase filers for protection of the lens. So the fact that this lovely warming filter gives a healthy glow to skin and surroundings is just a bonus. I am quite happy with this filter.

[Decamired Red 3] Really helps with skin tones, making them more fleshy looking, if that makes sense. Slightly pink in color. Mounts strong. 77mm lens cap FITS.

[0.4 lb] An absolute must when photographing people close up not inside a structure but outside.
