The FreeWave Captain Wireless TTL Flash Trigger and Remote TTL Shutter Release System for Canon E-TTL SLRs from Vello is a multi-purpose 2.4 GHz, 4-channel digital E-TTL radio system that gives wireless freedom from a PC cord plus the convenience of accurate exposures through wireless communication with your camera's E-TTL flash technology. Imagine the near impossibility of running 300' lengths of PC cord to shoot outdoors, then imagine the wireless freedom of remote triggered, camera control with auto exposure in a radius up to 300'. Using 2 shoe mount E-TTL flashes and an assistant you'd have enough mobility to light groups, demos, shows, portraits and events on location, on-the-fly.

And the benefits aren't limited to flash photography either. You can also use the receiver with the included camera cord and handhold the transmitter to wirelessly trigger your camera in single shot, continuous shot, bulb, and timer modes. This is of paramount importance in situations where a subject, such as wildlife, may be difficult to approach. Additionally, the wireless function of the device reduces the potential of camera shake when doing macro, close-up, and long exposure photography. The Captain system can also be combined with the non-TTL FreeWave Fusion LR system, and additional FreeWave Fusion LR receivers can be integrated into the Captain system.

The Vello FreeWave Wireless TTL Captain's High Speed Sync and Second Curtain Sync functions create easy to control lighting effects and other creative options such as stop-action shooting and a wide degree of background or ambient light control.

The Vello FreeWave Captain's Wireless TTL Transmitter provides the user with the ability to manually adjust the TTL of an E-TTL capable flash in 1/3 stops between -3 to +3

Control the High Speed Sync (HSS) function from the device. This mode allows your camera to set the shutter speed faster than a flash would normally be able to fire in sync with. HSS mode instructs the flash to fire multiple short pulses of light to match the shutter's speed. Your camera/flash manual will indicate how you can access this mode

Second Curtain Sync (SCS) mode fires a flash at the end of an exposure rather than at the beginning to create the illusion of motion in an image. This yields natural-looking blur trails behind the moving subject such as those seen in night shots of speeding cars

Control the AF illumination on the device itself, without having to go through your camera's menu

    Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Does this include a power cable for the Rx?

A: I'm not sure what you mean by Rx. The kit includes 2 cables. One is a 2.5mm to 2.5mm shutter release cable and the other is a 2.5mm to 3-pin shutter release cable. These cables should allow you to use this as a shutter release for any Canon camera.

Q: 2. Can I use the wireless transmitter to wirelessly flash a Canon Speedlite 430EX III-RT?

    A: Yes, with this kit.

Q: 3. Can I trigger this with a Vello Wireless ShutterBoss 4.0 Remote Timer and Trigger?

A: The shutterboss will not work with the vello free wave captain wireless ttl receiver.

Q: 4. Is this system IR or radio?

A: The Freewave Captain Wireless is a radio based, not infrared system.

Q: 5. Hi! I have a 70d , buy these radios along with a flash Bolt VX 760C and 430EX canon, but I can not shoot the two flash only fires the 430, the communication if it works, I'm doing wrong ? please help me! Thank you!

A: Carlo's sorry, I cant really help. I do use 430 flash, no experience with the other flash. I shoot with 60D bodies. I did not keep my vello's they over exposed everything by 3+ stops. I returned them right away, coughed up a bit more money and bought the Phottix Odin system. I love that one! no problems. still cant say if it would fire the bolt flash. one thing, do you have the contacts properly aligned???

Q: 6. Does the transmitter have a hotshoe for mounting a speedlight on top of it? So for example, I want to mount the transmitter on top of my camer's hotshoe, and then I want to also mount a speedlight on top of the transmitter .

A: No, the transmitter does not have a hotshoe. The receiver unit does, but it does not fires the flash in this combination: 5D + receiver + speeligth.

Q: 7. Will this work with canon mirrorless my camera and my 430 flash?

A: Yes, it is compatible with the Canon M and the 430ex flash.

Q: 8. Will this work with the YN600ex RT flash? The cheaper knockoff canon flash?

A: The 600ex works with the Freewave Captain but I found that the position of the 600ex is critical because of differences in dimensions. When I initally tried this combination with the flash fully inserted into the Captain, it would not fire, but when I pulled back slightly on the 600ex, it worked. YMMV!

    Q: 9. Will this unit work with the Nikon SB-400 (I have a D3200)?

A: I do not have a Nikon SB-400, the FreeWave did work well on my D3200 with my flash.

Q: 10. Does this unit support groups and Canon's ratio system? Can you control flash output with the camera's menu system as well as the transmitter?

A: I would like to be able to help you out with your questions but I have not yet used my transmitter/receiver and I am unable to answer your questions. I am impressed with the build quality and I also like the fact you can mount a strobe directly on top of the receiver. Having the capability of syncing up to 1/8,000 sec. is a nice feature. I don't want to give you an incorrect answer until I've actually used the units.

[4] This gives you TTL capability with a remote flash. I use these triggers with Canon flashes and have had no problems. I have not tried with non-Canon flashes so cannot comment on that. Works as advertised, easy to set up, easy to use. Battery life seems good - I have used these triggers several times and am still using the original batteries that came with the triggers.

[1.145 lb] I misplaced an older unit and this is a replacement. It works every time.

[1.145 lb] I took this triggering system out of the box and within less than 5 minutes I had set it up to work with my flash. The remotes seem very durable, and stay secured to my camera and to the stand. I own a Nikon flash and it fits into the slot securely.

[1.145 lb] Very easy to use, just attach the transmitter to the camera hot shoe and the receiver to your flash. Turn them on make sure the transmitter and receiver are set to the same channel as the flash and your ready to go.

[4x AA] I want to reduce the amount of equipment I lug around and FreeWave Captain Wireless E-TTL radio system has made that possible. I use on camera flashes for some location work. Not had enough time to test all the features but for portraits it works great.

[4] I purchased this as a replacement for one I had had for years. It packs a lot of functionality into a small package. I also like the storage case as it keeps all the connectors organized.

[1.145 lb] This is a very user friendly setup. Put batteries in them and was up and running instantly! They may not have all of the features as some of the more expensive units out there but they do what they say they and do it every time. I've used these on 4 portrait sessions in the past 4 week and they didn't let me down once! Great addition to my kit! Getting my flash off camera has made a huge difference in my portraits and given my more options.
