Customize your tone and capture quality sound indoors or outside for your next indie film, TV shoot, or documentary project with the RODE NTG4 Shotgun Microphone for Professionalsphantom-powered shotgun microphone. Specialized features such as low-noise circuitry, digitally switchable pad and frequency settings, and minimal handling noise reduce the need to repair and restore audio in post production.

The NTG4's elevated sensitivity allows it to produce strong output levels without having to apply extreme gain at your mic preamp. Sonically, the NTG4 delivers warm sound due in part to its gentle dip in high frequencies and its rumble-reducing selectable low-cut filter. A switchable treble boost is on hand for situations where additional clarity is needed.

The combination of the NTG4's 8.9" long body and supercardioid polar pattern yields focused front-facing directionality and enhanced attenuation of sound entering from the sides. Its low self-noise of 16 dBA and sensitive condenser element communicate detailed audio unburdened by the hiss that plagues many low-cost microphones. Plus, its balanced output allows longer cable runs than most camera-mount shotgun microphones.

Thanks to its 3-pin XLR output and compliance with 12, 24, or 48 VDC phantom power, the NTG4 is compatible with a variety of handheld audio recorders, field recorders, and mixer adapters as well as built-in preamps on many camcorders and cinema cameras.

Digital switching not only allows for intuitive access to the NTG4's settings, but it also retains their states when the mic is switched off. Activate the 75 Hz low-cut filter to reduce low-frequency noise from common sources such as air conditioners and traffic. Use the +6 dB treble boost for enhanced clarity and intelligibility (best for environments with minimal high-frequency ambient noise). When loud sound sources threaten to distort your recording, switch on the -10 dB pad to attenuate the input level.

The lightweight, metal-bodied NTG4 includes a mic clip for easy placement on a mic stand or boompole. Alternatively, mount the NTG4 in the Rode SM4-R shockmount or Rode PG2-R pistol grip (both available separately) to impede the transfer of vibrations in boompole or handheld applications.

The NTG4 has a foam windscreen to reduce unwanted wind noise from breezes, fans, heaters, and air conditioners. For maximum reduction of handling noise and wind noise in indoor or outdoor environments, consider the Rode Blimp furry windshield and shockmount suspension system (available separately).

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Issue invoices to Mexico?

A: Yes this is available for shipping to Mexico.

Q: 2. Which is the best option between the 3? NTG2, NTG4 or Sennheiser MKE 600

A: Having owned the NTG2, NTG4+, and used the NTG3 quite a bit, I can tell you they are very different microphones. If you can afford the NTG3 it will give you the most sensitivity. Too much at times. The NTG2 is inexpensive and can hold a AA battery for phantom power, but has no off switch. This is why I purchased the NTG4+. The internal battery lasts a full day and can be turned off when not in use. I like Sennheiser, but have not owned a shotgun from them, so can not offer an honest opinion.

Q: 3. Is PSC A4812 48V Phantom or Sennheiser 12TP48 going to work with Ntg4? I'm looking for something similar or smaller than a box shaped power supply. Thank you.

A: It looks like those should work fine with this unit.

Q: 4. I know that technically shotgun mics are meant for outdoor use, but does anyone have any experience with how well or poorly the rode ntg4 does inside, as in have you used it on your production indoor with satisfying enough results?

A: We bought ours primarily for indoor use and have been very satisfied with the results. We have a loud HVAC unit and the built in filter on the mic took away that sound and kept great clarity.

Q: 5. Is this Phantom Powered?

A: The Rode NTG4 will require phantom power in order to operate.

Q: 6. I have a Panasonic AG-UX180 professional camcorder. It has XLR input. I use this camera to record RC Airplane flight. Even though shotgun mics are designed for close-up audio, will this shotgun also work for distance airplane sound? If not, please recommend something in a similar price range that would work better. THANKS!

A: You would be better off with a longer shotgun mic for recording anything at a distance. The narrower audio spectrum highly increases the directional capability, therefore, decreasing unwanted peripheral sounds. In the low price range, you could consider the Audio Technica AT8015 US$299.00.

Q: 7. Would this mic work with my Sony adapter for my A7s? It has an xlr in??

A: The NTG4+ will work with an XLR adapter that is able to provide 48 volts phantom power to the mic.

Q: 8. Is this pole aluminum or carbon fiber?

A: K-Tek - KE-89CC Avalon Series Aluminum Boompole with Internal XLR Cable

Q: 9. I have a Rode Videopro shotgun mic. Besides the XLR inputs, How does this compare to that microphone?

A: The reach and rejection of the NTG 4+, along with a richer, fuller audio reproduction are just a few advantages. The NTG4+is also mor robustly built and includes an Internal Rechargeable Lithium Battery.

Q: 10. would this mic work with SKP 100 G4 Plug-on transmitter for dynamic microphones.

A: Yes, you can use the Sennheiser SKP 100 G4 transmitter with a Rode NTG4+ shotgun mic as long as you are using battery power for the mic. The SKP 100 does not supply phantom power.

[-10 dB] The price on these seems to fluctuate a lot.
I got this one on sale and actually bought an NTG4+ six months later for a ten spot less.
Sound quality is very good. Off axis rejection is also pretty good.
The low pass filter does a great job of eliminating boom vibration.
Impressive warranty too.

[Solid-State] After using the NTG4, I'm wondering why I didn't buy one a long time ago. It performs better than far more expensive mics in terms of sensitivity, directional pattern, and tone response.

The NTG4 has become my favorite mic for use in field recording for documentaries, and news gathering.

( I use it with a Zoom H4N Pro, which has phantom power available.... but if your recorder or camera doesn't have it, the NTG4+, which has an on-board battery, is a better choice. )

[Solid-State] A big step up from my old (20+ years) Audio-Technia.
Very quiet and has a nice, full sound. The low cut filter takes out all the boom/stand noise.
Like that it remembers your settings.

[1.18 lb] As a newbie to location sound, I was looking for best value for my limited budget. At $400, the NTG4 was a great purchase for me. I just used it for a location shoot where we had a nearby 55mph highway, low flying private airplanes, approach vector for passenger jets and neighbors who have tractors and guns to use. Takes that I would have sworn were irreparably compromised turned out fabulous with the NTG4. I was being cautious with the gain settings, so self-noise wasn't a real issue, but so far I'm loving this mike. I've seen the reviews comparing the NTG4 to the NTG3 and I agree that for someone with the budget and a discerning ear, the NTG3 is probably the better option. For someone like me, who is just starting out, you can't go wrong with the NTG4.

[Phantom Power] This is really a terrific microphone. Solidly built, good side rejection and a snap to use, it is my go-to shotgun for a lot of the film work I do. The price is excellent for the quality sound it delivers. And Rode stands by its gear. This is my second Rode shotgun and I expect I'll be using this well past the decade warranty.

[75 Hz ] I asked my voiceover agent to help me put together a home setup that would not only produce good sound for auditioning, but in the age of Covid, good production to actually record the job. The NTG4 shotgun mike along with my Scarlett Interface is what he recommended and they're excellent.

[75 Hz ] I noticed one of the other reviews compared the microphone and gave it a lower rating because it didn't match the NTG3. This isn't even a fair comparison as the NTG3 is in a much higher price and performance bracket. In it's price range the NTG4 is a workhorse mic. The NTG3 is the next step up. I chose the NTG4 and not the NTG4+ because lithium batteries eventually wear out and I prefer to invest for longer term use.

[75 Hz ] the quality on this microphone is awesome and the extra features built right in make it easy to handle most environments I'm in. Couldn't be happier with this!
