Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Might be a dumb question but can this be used with a 77mm filter on a 62mm lense? from the description it seems like its meant more for the other way around

A: This ring is to attach a 62mm filter to a 77mm lens thread but for wide lenses, that's a no-no, vignetting will occur.

Q: 2. How can I use an 82mm filter on a 77mm lens?

A: A step down ring can be used but will cause vignette issues. We do not suggest doing so.

Q: 3. Does this filter allows to use a 67mm filter on 52mm lenses?

A: This will actually do the opposite- this allows you to use a 52mm filter on a 67mm lens. Instead, you will want the 52-67mm step up ring: http://bhpho.to/1clCmra

Q: 4. Are there any side effects (vignetting, i think is the term used) when using the smaller 77mm filters on the larger 82mm lens?

A: Hi again Steve, just received your reply. I did not consider going to a full frame camera. Throwing that into the mix especially with a 24-70 lens I think pretty much would cause vignetting. Going from an 82mm down to a 77mm equals about one-quarter inch that would equal a one-eighth inch reduction on each side of the filter's rim. I would expect you'll get a lot of vignetting. One consideration is that the Sensei 82-77 step-down ring is not really expensive and if it caused too much vignetting you're not out a lot of money for the ring itself. I buy that brand, as they work very well and at a low cost. I would say to start saving for 82mm filters; I think you'll fine more vignetting than you'll want to deal with, especially going to a full frame camera and that lens.

Q: 5. Are the threads female on both sides?

A: No. The 58mm side is male and screws into the lens. The 49mm side is female and receives the filter's male threads.

Q: 6. Does the difference in thread sizes cause noticeable vignetting on wider focal lengths?

A: Very possibly, yes, it depends on the focal length of the lens, how wide it is. It always best to get a larger filter if possible. Putting a smaller filter, especially on a wide angle lens, is a recipe towards vignetting.

Q: 7. My email was wrong. Is this a 52mm female thread? to a 48mm male thread?

A: The Sensei 52-48mm Step-Down Ring has female 48mm threads on the front of the ring to allow you to connect a filter with 48mm male threads to the step-down ring. The back of the step-down ring has 52mm male filter threads which will screw into the 52mm female filter threads on the front of your lens.

Q: 8. Is the description backwards? This looks like it allows one to use a 72mm filter on a 67mm lens. Why would you use a filter that is smaller than the lens?

A: The description is correct; a step-down ring allows you to use smaller filters on larger-diameter lenses. There are a few reasons as to why, for example, to save on the cost of buying filters again if you already own a lot of them in the smaller size. Also, if the lenses have a very narrow field-of-view, the visible vignette might not be significant and not influence the photo that much.

Q: 9. What is the height protrusion of the ring above the lens?

A: Sensei PRO 72-67mm Aluminum Step-Down Ring is 3.5mm tall above the threads.

Q: 10. What is the height protrusion of the ring above the lens?

A: Sensei 72-67mm Step-Down Ring IS 4mm tall above the threads.

[Aluminum] Very impressed with this adapter ring. Bought it to use my Nikon 52mm close-up lens on my little zoom lens for additional closeness.
It works perfect.

[4.0 mm] Very solid for a simple accessory, but the ridged edge makes a difference in removing tight filters.

[0.1 lb] The Sensei Pro step-down rings are a great alternative to brass rings. They fit perfectly without snags or binding and do exactly what they're supposed to do without any hassle. A much better value compared to the lower end versions of step-down rings. Fit perfectly without binding or getting stuck.

[58 mm to 52 mm] The Nikon ES-1slide adapter has a 62mm thread. The Nikon 60mm AFS Micro f2.8 has a 52mm thread. In order to use the ES1 with the 60mm Micro lens you need a Nikon BR-5 Adapter Ring 62-52mm. This Nikon ring costs $44.95. Both the Sensei 62-52mm Step-Down Ring $4.95 and this one The Pro Aluminum at $7.95 work just as well as the Nikon Ring. The threads are smooth and this Sensei Ring is in my opinion just as good as the Nikon BR-5.

[58 mm to 52 mm] Exceptional quality and so inexpensive. I have several of these in various sizes as well as the standard versions (without knurled sides). I highly recommend with the knurled sides as sometimes the standard ones can become difficult to remove if you accidentally screw them on too tight, it happens. Either way, I highly recommend these rings. Can't beat the quality for the price.

[Side] I know step down rings are very simple pieces of metal. But I was relieved to see that they fit well on the lens And my filter fits well on the inside ring. (I have seen worse...)
