Q: 1. hey i have a Tamron 20-40 2.8 77mm Aspherical lens that has a bubble to it, and i want to step down to a 72mm, could this fit on my tamron which is Aspherical? thanks

A: That is a step down ring. If your lens has a 77mm filter thread it will fit and allow you to use 72mm filters on it. Note that stepping down you will get vignette.

Q: 2. What is the difference between this one and SESDR7767 which is the same brand but doesn’t have “pro” in the name?

A: The Pro has knurled edges for a better grip and corrosion resistant aluminum alloy.

Q: 3. Is the description backwards? This looks like it allows one to use a 72mm filter on a 67mm lens. Why would you use a filter that is smaller than the lens?

A: The description is correct; a step-down ring allows you to use smaller filters on larger-diameter lenses. There are a few reasons as to why, for example, to save on the cost of buying filters again if you already own a lot of them in the smaller size. Also, if the lenses have a very narrow field-of-view, the visible vignette might not be significant and not influence the photo that much.

Q: 4. Can you use a lens hood with this?

A: Yes, you can attach a 72mm lens hood to this step-up ring. Here are two to consider. B+W 72mm #900 Rubber Lens Hood B&H # BWLHR72 and Sensei 72mm Quick Clip Lens Hood B&H # SELNQC72

Q: 5. Any vignetting? I would be using 37mm macro filters on 46mm lenses. Thanks!

A: Regarding the Sensei PRO 46-37mm Aluminum Step-Down Ring, yes, using 37mm on a lens with a 46mm diameter may cause vignetting.

Q: 6. Are there any side effects (vignetting, i think is the term used) when using the smaller 77mm filters on the larger 82mm lens?

A: Hi again Steve, just received your reply. I did not consider going to a full frame camera. Throwing that into the mix especially with a 24-70 lens I think pretty much would cause vignetting. Going from an 82mm down to a 77mm equals about one-quarter inch that would equal a one-eighth inch reduction on each side of the filter's rim. I would expect you'll get a lot of vignetting. One consideration is that the Sensei 82-77 step-down ring is not really expensive and if it caused too much vignetting you're not out a lot of money for the ring itself. I buy that brand, as they work very well and at a low cost. I would say to start saving for 82mm filters; I think you'll fine more vignetting than you'll want to deal with, especially going to a full frame camera and that lens.

Q: 7. Can you stack these? I have a 58-77 but I want to convert it to an 82mm. Can I buy a 77mm to 82mm and stack it with the 58mm to 77mm?

A: You can do that, but vignetting is possible on a wide-angle lens--this 58-82mm adapter ring is a better idea: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1443406-REG/sensei_surpa_5882_pro_58_82mm_step_up_ring.html

Q: 8. Might be a dumb question but can this be used with a 77mm filter on a 62mm lense? from the description it seems like its meant more for the other way around

A: This ring is to attach a 62mm filter to a 77mm lens thread but for wide lenses, that's a no-no, vignetting will occur.

Q: 9. Does this cause heavy vignetting with prime lenses for example 50mm?

A: No, you should not get vignetting with a 50mm lens.

Q: 10. I have a Canon 24-70mm ef L lens f.2.8 uses 82mm filter. I want to step down to myCanon 24-105mm ef L lens with 77mm filter will this step down ring work?

A: It depends... If your camera has an APSC-size sensor, it will probably work. On a full-frame, it is very likely that you will end up with dark corners at the wide end, because at 24mm the lens has a wide view, and the step-down ring + the filter will extend too far forward and cause vignetting. Best way is to hold your filter about 3-4mm in front of the lens and see if it does cause vignetting.

[72 mm to 52 mm] This step-down ring is high quality and in combination with the Sensei 52-48mm step-down ring lets me use 2 astronomical filters on my camera lens that have a 67mm filter thread. Gives me a new astronomical imaging solution.

[0.15 lb] The ridges are important to have in case a filter gets stuck!

[72 mm to 52 mm] Very solid for a simple accessory, but the ridged edge makes a difference in removing tight filters.

[72 mm to 52 mm] The Nikon ES-1slide adapter has a 62mm thread. The Nikon 60mm AFS Micro f2.8 has a 52mm thread. In order to use the ES1 with the 60mm Micro lens you need a Nikon BR-5 Adapter Ring 62-52mm. This Nikon ring costs $44.95. Both the Sensei 62-52mm Step-Down Ring $4.95 and this one The Pro Aluminum at $7.95 work just as well as the Nikon Ring. The threads are smooth and this Sensei Ring is in my opinion just as good as the Nikon BR-5.

[72 mm to 52 mm] I purchased this step-down ring to use the 52mm ND and polarizing filters that I already own on a Mitakon 35mm f/0.95 lens. The ring is beautifully constructed and I've had no issues with it.

[72 mm to 52 mm] I wouldn't normally resort to a step-down ring, as they almost always result in vignetting. However, I have three macro lenses (Nikon), two of which take 52mm filters, but one requires 62mm. Fortunately, at close-up distances the field-of-view narrows, so 52mm filters work just fine. The ring is nicely made and finished, a high-quality bargain.
