Offering a 10-stop reduction in exposure, along with infrared attenuating abilities, this 49mm Tiffen XLE Series 49mm 10-Stop IRND Filterenables the use of longer exposure times with maintained color fidelity. By darkening the entire scene, this 3.0 optical density filter allows you to work with wider apertures or longer shutter speeds without overexposing your image, in order to better control depth of field or convey movement more easily.

The IRND design of this filter has been optimized for use with digital sensors, and works to attenuate both visible and infrared light. Digital image sensors are more sensitive to a greater range of light spectra, and as such are prone to color shifts or casts when photographing darker subjects or scenes that require increased exposure times. This filter's unique design helps to suppress false colors for greater neutrality and faithful color reproduction.

This filter is made using ColorCore technology, a process that involves laminating the filter substrate between 2 pieces of optical glass, grinding flat to a tolerance of 1/10,000th of an inch, and mounting to precision metal rings.

[Aluminum] I used this filter for the first time today, having bought it late last year. Instead of the usual watery subjects, I used ferry-unload traffic; we live on a small island and traffic is hard to find. I took a photo without the filter (Nikon 1 J5, 6.7-13mm lens), and simply multiplied that exposure by 4100 (10 stops) for use with it. Below is a 30-second exposure.

[0.11 lb] Great for eclipse and long exposure photos. Like the extra InfraRed filtering.

[49 mm] Wow, is all I can say! This filter rules, i now can do 4 second exposures in super bright light and am getting results that are spectacular. I am not getting any green shots as this other reviewer ( set your camera color to neutral or faithful)suggests but very color spot on and saturated without any overexposure. very happy indeed.

[0.11 lb] I purchased this filter recently and used it yesterday for the first time. I have many filters and primarily use B+W filters for long exposure landscape photography and I shoot in RAW. I use a 24mm prime lens and 52mm screw on filters. I love the build quality of B+W filters, but it my experience they tend to have a brownish / sepia cast. This is, of course, easily fixed in post processing. Back to Tiffen's product. This filter is slightly more expensive compared to B+W's ND filters. The build quality is slightly lower than B+W's, but it is not cheap feeling or flimsy by any means. The RAW images had no color cast and needed no color correction. I was able to capture a two-minute exposure during a sunset and I was extremely happy with the result. When researching this product, I was unable to find many reviews. The few that I found stated that it is possible to auto focus with the filter in place and I was eager to test this. I frequently do a clumsy dance of focusing, turning auto focus off and screwing on the filter while hoping not to mistakenly adjust the focus. I discovered that you can use auto focus with the filter, to an extent. You must be in very bright light, but it is possible. For the TL; DR summary: expensive, no color cast and you can auto focus in bright light! Great filter!
