Q: 3. Can the tripod legs support more than the 12 lbs stated? Is the supported weight limited by the head?

A: The Davis & Sanford TR654C-36 Traverse Carbon Fiber Grounder Tripod With Ball Head will not provide a solid support for more than 12 lbs--it may not fall down, but it won't be the steady support you need.

A: No it doesnt.

Q: 8. would this tripod be a good first tripod or would the TR553-228 be a better choice?

A: There are general rules that are good to use when picking out a tripod.1.Maximum height: A tripod should be at least as tall as you.2.Maximum Load: The camera, lens, flash and any other accessories combined should be considered. And the general rule is that a tripod should hold around double.3.Tripods heads: Depending on the type of photography being shot some heads are better than others. There are video heads, Pan/tilt heads and Ball heads. The tripods you listed are both ball heads and those are good in general for most photography but video. They are both good beginner tripods but do have differences.TR645C-36 has a load capacity of 12 lbs verse the TR-553-228 has 10 lbs.And the TR6546-36 has a maximum height of 65 and the TR-553-228 is a somewhat shorter and at a maximum of 53 So I would out of these two pick the one that comes closes to your height or taller and that can support what you will be putting on it.

Q: 9. does the tripod have a hook at the bottom of the center column for holding extra weight?

A: Yes it does.

Q: 10. What is the D&S warranty on this tripod?

A: The will come with a Limited 10-Year Warranty form Davis & Sanford.

[Yes] Have been looking for a light weight Tripod, that would handle my Sigma 150-600mm Lens. And this is the One!!! Also a very good price. I would highly recommend Davis & Sanford Traverse Carbon TR684C-36

[Yes, Round] I purchased this tripod because I am sucker for a good deal on a great tripod. It was on sale for $80.00. This is designated as a travel tripod because it folds up to a small size. However, with the legs fully extended it is six feet tall. And, it come with a carrying case.

[5.15 lb] Owned it for 2 years. Is it the best period ? Probably not, but for a fraction of the cost, it is SO worth the $. Put it this way, for my types of shooting {often longer exposure, and always bracketed sets for HDR processing} it is just about as important a piece of equipment, as is my camera. Also, I do a lot of hiking with it (not using the case.. great case for storage and transport though) so mine has seen its share of bumps and bangs, but it is holding up great :) Days out in the field in 2 years; about 200.

Highly recommended.

[Yes, Round] This is really a fabulous tripod.  A carbon fiber tripod that goes up to 68” with a load capacity or 18 lbs, and folds down to 19” is amazing.  I love it.  It comes in a great case.

[Yes] I received my tripod in time for snow and ice in NJ. The tripod functioned flawlessly, even soaked with freezing cold water...(much better than I did). The ball head is much different than I'm use to but locks everything up tightly. I'm using a Canon 5DRs with several lenses in both portrait & landscape mode. One of the few products I haven't found anything to complain about yet.I had to wait for it but I think it was time well spent.I ordered it directly from D&S because I needed it for a trip, which it didn't come for.. :((sorry B&H... I cheated on you..)

[1x 1/4"-20 Male] The design of the tripod could use improvement but I love how big this tripod is when extended given it's compact size and light weight. Highly recommended.

[Ball Head] y first Tripod. I love it so far. Easy to use and lightweight. Carbon Fiber for this price is insane. Cannot comment on its longevity since I only owned it for 2 months. The build quality do feel solid.

[1x 1/4"-20 Male] Ridged enough to support my Nikon D3x so I guess it will support just about any DSLR.
