Pairing a versatile zoom range with a fast, constant f/2.8 maximum aperture, the Pentax D FA* 70-200mm f/2.8 Lensis a telephoto zoom designed for Pentax D FA* 70-200mm f/2.8 LensK-mount DSLRs. Offering a 105-300mm-equivalent focal length range with APS-C cameras, this lens is particularly well-suited to sports, landscape, and wildlife uses, especially when working in trying light conditions. Extra-low dispersion glass elements have been incorporated within the optical design to minimize chromatic aberrations and distortions, as well as produce a high degree of sharpness from edge-to-edge. HD and Aero Bright coatings have also been applied to lens elements to reduce reflections and flare and a Super Protect coating also helps to shield the front and rear elements from dust, water, and oils. Further enabling its use in difficult conditions, this 70-200mm f/2.8 also features a weather-resistant construction with 13 separate seals to block moisture and dust from entering the lens.

In regard to focusing, a DC autofocus motor realizes fast and quiet performance and is accentuated by the Quick-Shift Focus System for changing between AF and MF control by simply turning the focusing ring. One of the most versatile zoom ranges, this 70-200mm lens provides a 105-300mm equivalent focal length range when used with Pentax APS-C DSLRs.

A constant f/2.8 maximum aperture delivers consistent performance throughout the zoom range and is particularly beneficial to creating shallow depth of field imagery.

Extra-low dispersion glass elements are incorporated within the optical design to minimize chromatic aberrations throughout the zoom range and produce high image clarity with edge-to-edge sharpness.

High Definition (HD) and Aero Bright coatings have been applied to lens elements to reduce surface reflections, flare, and ghosting in order to deliver greater contrast and color fidelity. Additionally, a Super Protect (SP) coating also helps to protect the surface of exposed elements from fingerprints, water, dust, and oils and also makes the front and rear elements easier to clean.

A Direct Current (DC) autofocus motor benefits from an internal focusing design and delivers fast, smooth, and quiet focusing performance.

The Quick-Shift Focus System allows you to first use autofocus to acquire general focus on a subject, then instantly refine your focus position manually without the need for an AF/MF selector.

A focus range limiter allows you to constrain the lens' focus range between different sets of distances for faster performance and greater responsiveness.

The weather-resistant construction utilizes 13 distinct seals to prevent moisture or dust from entering the lens.

A removable, rotating tripod collar is included with the lens for better balance when shooting atop a tripod.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Is the removable part of the tripod collar compatible with the Pentax DA 300 f4? I lost that part of that 300mm lens.

A: The tripod collars are not compatible. They are two different lenses.

Q: 2. Does internal focusing shorten the focal length slightly like with the 60-250?

A: that's a little above my technical 'expertise.' i'm just beginning to get familiar with the lens myself

Q: 3. I want to know the diameter of this lens? For example Canon 200 L lens has a diameter of 72mm. How much is for this lens?

A: The diameter of this lens is 74.5mm.

Q: 4. Can this be used on crop-sensor or only ff?

A: Any Pentax lens will work on a crop sensor camera.

Q: 5. I really love my K3 and do pet photography with it. I need a good zoom that's quick on AF. The Pentax smc PENTAX-DA* 50-135mm f/2.8 ED (IF) SDM Lens just doesn't autofocus quickly enough. The web page for this new Pentax 70-200 says The Quick-Shift Focus System allows you to first use autofocus to acquire general focus on a subject, then instantly refine your focus position manually without the need for an AF/MF selector. Is this Pentax again not being able to pinpoint focus the way Canon, Nikon, Tamron and Sigma seem capable of, or do we have a genuine capability here for instant lock on moving objects equivalent to say the Tamron 70-200?

A: The new 70-200 is a fast lens but so is the 50-135mm lens. Both are f/2.8 which helps the focus speed. But the cameras focus system does have a very large part to how fast and accurate it can focus.Just to compare the K-3 has 27 Phase Detection autofocus points and the Nikon D7200 has 51 Phase Detection points and 15 cross-type focus points. So in most cases the Nikon Model will focus faster and more accurate.

Q: 6. Under listed specs, only ASP-C is the compatible format. I thought FA lenses were native 35mm format. Is the information posted re compatibility accurate?

A: Yes, the Pentax HD PENTAX D FA* 70-200mm f/2.8 ED DC AW Lens would be compatible for use with full-frame cameras. As the lens was released in 2015 and Pentax's full-frame camera was not announced until 2016 (all previous DSLR cameras being APS-C cameras), our website did not indicate which Pentax lenses were full-frame compatible. It is listed under the Product Highlights on the lens' webpage, and our website will be updated soon listing which Pentax K-mount lenses would also offer full-frame coverage.

Q: 7. What focal length multiplier is compatible with this lens on the K-1?

A: Please review the following Pentax 1.4x HD PENTAX-DA AF Rear Converter AW for K-Mount Lenses BH #PE14C • MFR #37962 https://bhpho.to/3pOilDy

Q: 8. Can you tell me who makes this lens for Pentax?

A: It has the same optical properties and dimensions as the Tamron 70-210mm f4 lens so it is probably made by Tamron. However, since Pentax has their name on the lens, it is essentially made by Pentax and warranted by Pentax.

Q: 9. Is the tripod mount arca swiss compatible or is a separate adapter needed?

A: The tripod collar mount is a standard 1/4 -20 thread.

Q: 10. My 200mm 645z lens operates flawlessly but I notice that in manual focus, the focus ring is hardly damped at all. Quite, almost too easy to turn. Do any owners notice the same?

A: We have not had any issues we are aware of from customers with manual focus on that lens. If you do feel you might have an issue you need to contact direct our customer service department.

[Full-Frame] I bought this for use on the K-1 and love it. Image quality is excellent from corner to corner up and down the zoom range (even at 200 and wide open), focus is silent and quick, it's a pleasure to use, and built like a tank--this thing will survive the zombie apocalypse. And that's really the only downside: this is not a lens you just casually throw in your bag or carry around. No question, it's the best Pentax zoom I've owned, and my second favorite portrait lens behind the 77 Limited. Though this lens doesn't have the vignetting or purple fringing of the 77 and is certainly technically better, I still think I slightly prefer the tones, bokeh, and 'character' of the 77 (though that could be just because I'm used to it). While that lens will still have a place in my bag, no doubt, the flexibility of this beast really goes a long way and the image quality is absolutely first rate. Highly recommend to anyone thinking about it--it's a good addition.

[Pentax K] This is a great lens. The focusing is fast and spot-on. I also used it with the Pentax 1.4 TC and I noticed no difference in focusing speed on birds in flight or on stationary objects. It is a real pleasure on the K-1. It's competitor is the Tamron 70-200 but I wanted the Pentax because the screw-drive Tamron is slower to focus. The only negative is that the Pentax is heavy, but built like a tank. I used it hand-held but it has a solid tripod mount.

[Autofocus] I had a chance to shoot few hundred pictures with D-FA* 70-200 on my K5-II this weekend. I am truly impressed. The lens is very sharp wide open, and autofocus is very accurate. Color reproduction, out of focus areas - everything is beyond my expectations. Honestly, I've not seen such image quality from any Pentax zoom (and even many of the primes) ever. The build quality is very high, nothing to complain about. I really like that the tripod support is double-purposed as a carrying handle, it's very convenient. The only thing I'm not quite happy with is the weight. The lens is really heavy, I'd recommend using a monopod with it.

[f/2.8] The first thing you will say when you open the box is "Wow". This is large, heavy and solid. The next thing you will see, is how incredible the image quality is. Another "Wow". I was a little put off by the price until I seen what this is capable of. It is Laser Sharp, Rating a 9.9 for sharpness in the Pentax Forums. Fast focus, Quiet, Sharp and Very Well built. No regrets, I love this lens.

[f/2.8] Quite honestly the best lens I have ever shot with! It creates stellar images, is built like a tank, and feels awesome. Pentax hit a grand slam with this one!

[f/2.8] So far I've used this lens for sports action photography, and I plan to use it for a few portraits down the road. Although I paid a hefty sum for a hefty lens, I'm glad it has features the 70-200mm f/2.8 Tamron does not: weather sealing, internal zooming (no telescoping action), and DC motor for faster focusing -- a must for fast-action burst shooting. I also read about sharpness issues with the Tamron. It's significantly less expensive, and a bit lighter/smaller, but you get what you pay for, I guess. This Pentax lens produces extremely sharp photos, even at f/2.8. Like others have said, it's built like a tank, but it can be hand-held. Built to last and get the job done in any conditions.

[77 mm (Front)] By far the sharpest, most contrasty, rich colored, fully weather sealed (not just moisture but also drip proo) lens Pentax has ever made. You won't be disappointed.

[Autofocus] The product is great. Although weight is larger but is a great lens. I got it a few days yet but very happy.

[0.13x] This big heavy beast is astonishingly sharp at all focal lengths, even wide open. I have used it for animals and outdoor sport, where perhaps it isn't really long enough on the K1, but I can crop heavily and still get far sharper and more compelling images than with the DA 55-300 at 300mm. The bokeh is delightfully smooth, and the AF very precise. The D FA* 70-200 is certainly a bag of (superb) primes, though bear in mind that it is probably heavier than a collection of good primes covering the same range. The lens does not extend when focusing or zooming, making weather sealing much more effective (AW rather than WR). The manual focusing ring is beautifully smooth and precise, and easily operated with one finger. The tripod foot is very secure, but easily removed. Despite its weight, the 70-200 is quite easy to hand-hold in decent light. For long periods though, many users may like to use a tripod or monopod.
