Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Can this angled polar finder scope be attached to the Sky Watcher Star Adventurer tracker or wedge for easier polar visualization to set tracking?

A: Anything is possible

Q: 2. How is the Skytracker programmed or set to track the sky based on location, season and time?

A: You simply use the included polar scope to do a polar alignment. Once it is polar aligned it will automatically rotate at the speed set with the selector switch whenever the power switch is turned on. This will give a rough polar alignment and ok tracking accuracy. For better tracking accuracy there are Apps available which allow you to enter your precise location and will then show precisely where in the polar scope reticle to align the pole star. This will give you the best accuracy possible with this unit.

Q: 3. Is the scope able to perform a good alignment with the South Pole, for those in the Southern Hemisphere? Or is it only good for the northern hemisphere users?

A: It is possible, but far from easy & a solid working knowledge of the Sth Polar region of the sky is required. Sigma Octantis suffers from being sufficiently faint that once it is naked-eye visible, it is indistinct from its surrounding background of almost equally faint stars. Decent approximate alignment for exposures 30s with wider lenses can be achieved with the 'scope removed by using the opening for it as a sighting hole for the Crux/Centaurus (pointers) method. Precise adjustment is fiddly & best practised in daylight using a terrestrial landmark to familiarise yourself with those controls first. That said, this device is a tiny fraction of the price of a cheap Equatorial telescope mount, (& that will also need aligning). This instrument needs practise & patience to get good results from it & it would be unrealistic to expect to get great photos on your first few times in the field with it. Q: 4. Will this work with a Meade LXD75 mount?

A: Do not know who has ever tried it. it was designated specifically for the Explore Scientific Polar scope for Exos-2

Q: 5. Is it comply with Vixen polarie 35505?

A: Yes it is compatible with the Vixen Optics Polarie Star Tracker: https://bhpho.to/2YyeMV0

Q: 6. Hello. How well does the rechargeable battery perform in cold weather? best skies are often in the dead of winter. Thanks in advance.

A: I've used it in the cold mountain-top but have not run the battery down, most I've seen is about 4 hours use with battery still doing well. I do take a USB battery tank along as a backup.

Q: 7. I have a 100-400mm (3.5 lbs) lens with a canon 5D IV (1.6 lbs). Will this work? Will I need a counterweight? I would mount the lens on the device I think. Im just getting started and just learning about whats required.

A: With the camera and lens listed plus a ball, you will be close to the recommended, maximum weight limit of the SkyTracer Pro. I suggest saving the money you would spend on the iOptron SkyTracker Pro and associated counterweight and purchase the iOptron SkuGuider that has an 11 lb payload. I have the iOptron SkyTracker but wish I had purchased the SkyGuider that will better handle the heavier loads.

Q: 8. I am in Ecuador, just 200 miles south of the equator. Will this work at a latitude of almost 0?

A: Short answer is yes. But the polar scope will be of no use since both the north and south poles will not be visible. Your polar axis will be essentially horizontal. You will need to line up this axis so it points south. There will be a lot of torque on this axis from your camera load, so keep it simple! I'd suggest contacting the manufacturer for advice.

Q: 9. Does this come with the cloth carrying case, as I have seen on the iOptron website?

A: There a carrying case but it isn't cloth; it's more like a synthetic mete rial.

Q: 10. Can this be used to photograph deep space objects like the Orion nebula? I am planning to use my tamron 150-600 on a Sony A7R2. Would it work with this combo?

A: Yes however I would recommend getting the Ball Head, and Counter Weight with that set up. So it can support that weight.

[3 x 2 x 0.1"] I am very pleased with this unit which is replacing the original SkyTracker camera mount. I now have the capability to track on the Sun (for the Solar Eclipse in Aug 2017) and on the Moon which I could not do with the original camera mount.

[2 x LR41] Solid and reliable star tracking mount. Handles my Canon M50 and wide field plus 55-200mm kit lens no problem. Price is right and quality of unit is above par.

B&H is a pleasure to deal with (bought camera and tracker through them).
You can spend more but for a lightweight setup like mine it can't be beat !!!

[3 x 2 x 0.1"] This is just a quick first check of the mount, for the moment I have only Panasonic ultrazoom (DMC-FZ200), which is not well suited for the astrophotography (only 1min of maximal exposition and poor focusing). Below are the photos of Pleiades and Orion nebula (M42) taken with the maximum zoom (35mm equivalent is 600mm of focal length). Pleiades: 5x1min, M42: 4x1min stacks. Both stacks are taken at Chicago suburb with very high light pollution. My opinion: for 600mm of equivalent focal length it is quite good result, almost round stars. The mount is very portable and very easy to setup, it took 5-6 min to make everything ready (including polar alignment with smartphone application from iOptron). Overall, I'm happy with this mount, at least for now, but I'll test it again with Canon 70D and 135mm and 300mm lens as soon as I'll return from the business trip.

[3 x 2 x 0.1"] My first couple nights using this were tough, not gonna lie. I live south of Buffalo, NY and I deal with a lot of light pollution up north. That being said it's hard to distinguish Polaris when polar aligning. This whole week the skies have been clear and after a week I have my setup all ready within 10 minutes max. I used a couple lens with the largest being a 300mm focal length and at 3 minutes with that I got no star trails. This is definitely worth the price and more and I highly recommend this for a starter star tracker!

[0.1 lb] Simple to setup and use (charge it, attach your camera, use their smartphone app to align it to the North Star, line up on your subject and start shooting). Many varied cameras will work since you can take long exposures, I've done 5 minute exposures with no star trails. For such long exposures you need to be able to hold your shutter open using the camera Bulb mode or an external shutter control.

[2 x LR41] Wow! It sure is a pleasure to use a well designed, crafted, and executed piece of hardware, that works as advertised! It is amazing how pleasurable it makes the task (for a beginner like me) to use the 'proper tool for the job'. I really can't compare it to other offerings, but, this one is just a joy to use. I was able to make an accurate polar alignment in less than 5 minutes, spend most of my time (about 5 min) trying to focus at infinity in the dark, and then take many great 30 sec exposures with my 200mm kit zoom lens! I also purchased the associated Ball Head v2 and the 1.25 Stainless Steel Tripod for SmartEQ and SkyTracker-- they all work so well together.

[0.1 lb] My larger mount is used with camera or telescope or both. But I wanted something travel-ready to shoot night sky or solar eclipse photos. The sky Tracker fits the bill. It is well built, and functions as advertised. For me optical pole finder is preferable because the electronic version requires a pc laptop or equal, and that is just more stuff to carry, or lose charge. I like that there tracking rates for Stars, Sun and Moon, and northern or southern hemisphere. The slew rate comes in real handy during set-up. The only negative is minor. The weight rating/limit is not helpful. A torque limit would be more precise and more useful, I think. If the load is well balanced you can have more weight than the rating.

[2 x LR41] I have tested this unit only once. It showed good tracking- nice round stars after a two minute exposure. That said, I was using an 18mm focal length, so this wasn't a challenge trial. The polar alignment scope is a pleasure to use and very accurate

[2 x LR41] I purchased this for the August 21 eclipse which was also the first time I used it. Despite my lack of experience or practice with it beforehand, I managed to accomplish a daytime polar alignment using an app and I was able to get everything set up without a problem. The Skytracker Pro performed great despite the fact that I was using gear that was heavier than the specs on unit provided. I am not impressed by most things I buy, but this time I definitely was!
