Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. What are the actual dimensions (L & W) of the writing surface only (below the clapper mechanism itself? (If you measured it as a rectangle, without the rounded edges).

A: About 7" x 11"

Q: 2. Are the color lines printed on or are they a sticker?

A: The color lines would be printed on this Elvid 7-Section Acrylic Production Slate with Soft Case Kit.

Q: 3. Are the color clappers for color correction?

A: Yes. They can help with color correction.

Q: 4. can this monitor be used for Zoom?

A: The Steven Slate Audio Raven MTI2 is not a standard computer monitor. It is a multitouch display screen designed to be used as a control surface for a DAW (digital audio workstation) It connects to a computer using standard HDMI cables and USB 2.0, and an iLok dongle is required for operation. I would not recommend purchasing it for Zoom, though it would probably work. You can search under "Computer Monitors & Displays" to find a large selection of much better options for 27" monitors to use for Zoom at a fraction of the price.

Q: 5. Is it easy to erase? I’ve encountered many slates that get smudged when I erase markings off them and the printed text gets rubbed off easily.

A: This slate wipes clean and easily when used with the recommennded dry-erase markers.

Q: 6. Are the colors on this clapper vector compatible?

A: As with any colors, the varied hues and tones on the clapper sticks of the Elvid 9-Section Acrylic Production Slate with Color Clapper Sticks (B&H# ELPS911C) can certainly be used in post production to manually and visually match them with those on one's monitor. However, they are only rough approximations of scientifically calibrated colors and are not designed to be compatible with any calibration tool nor standardized scientific color calibration specification.

Q: 7. Are the colours stickers or paint?

A: This would be painted on, it would not be stickers.

Q: 8. What type/size of allen key screws and washers to replace if need to?

A: 1/8" bolts, washers, and holding nuts would do fine with the Elvid 7-Section Acrylic Production Slate with Soft Case Kit.

Q: 9. what are the sticks made out of?

A: Not sure if I got a defective slate but the arm is so tight that you cant clap the board. Sticks are wood.

Q: 10. How loud is the clapper (db)?

A: The volume of the Elvid 9-Section Acrylic Production Slate with Color Clapper Sticks is determined by how hard you clap it. On average the clap will be around 100 DB.

[Grayscale] If you know what an insert slate is, you can skip the next paragraph. If you're new to filmmaking, please read:

This is a very small slate at 4x5. A previous reviewer exclaims, This thing is a toy! It is not. Insert slates are very helpful tools for marking tight insert shots where the frame is too small to fit a full-size slate. Though the clapper sticks are not always needed, it is handy to have them for the times when they are.

If you're looking for an insert slate, this one covers all the bases. The construction feels solid and durable, and the sticks have a comfortable amount of tension and resistance. The layout on the dry-erase surface follows common US standards and provides for all the important information.

As for the bundle, it is notable that the soft case is a bit larger than the slate, so it is not a snug fit. But padded protection is padded protection, and this pouch is effective for protecting the slate in storage and in transit.

This is a great addition to the gear package.

[Grayscale] I have owned a few slates, but this is my first from Birns & Sawyer, and I was quite impressed by the quality. The biggest difference is the wood, which is actual hardwood, and attractive wood at that. My other slates were made of MDF, and that's why they have work out or broken. I expect this to stand up to much abuse for a long time. The metal that hinges the two sticks together is in the center, in slots cut into the sticks. There is no wobble, and the tension can be adjusted by tightening or loosening the hinge screw. The color stripes are made of individual stripes of solid color plastic. My color is simply printed on my other slates, and that eventually wears off.

One of the reviews for the stand-alone slate complains that this is a toy because it is so small. This size is called an insert slate, and it is intentionally small so it can be used for close-up insert shots. One would normally also own a full-size slate.

The Elvid soft case holds the slate loosely. It has soft lining, is padded, and the exterior fabric and zipper both seem tough. There is a loop on the outside to hold a dry erase marker.
