Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Just bought the Sony Distagon FE 35mm f1.4. The lens hood when reversed on the lens for storage, doesn't 'click' into place, like the hoods on my other Sony lenses. Just seems to be held in by friction. Is this normal, or is my hood defective? It does 'click' into place when mounted 'forward'.

A: Hi Peter, it should click into place. -Anthony

Q: 2. It is true this lens was updated (2018)with a new SSM? also decentering was solved? thanks

A: Yes there was an update to this lens in 2018, it solved a few issues, one of which being the decentering issue.

Q: 3. What are your thoughts between the Sony Distagon T* FE 35MM f/1.4 [SEL35F14Z] versus Sony - 35mm f/1.8 FE [SEL35F18F]. Money is not an issue but I still can't decide?

A: There is only 2/3 of a stop difference in the maximum apertures of these lenses and they would both be very sharp. One might choose the Sony Distagon T* FE 35mm f/1.4 ZA Lens if they are shooting more video being that the lens offers a de-clicked aperture ring, while someone looking to spend less but needs the low light performance might choose the FE 35mm f/1.8 instead.

Q: 4. How's this lens on the Sony FS7 ? Works well for video and no compatibility issues?

A: The Distagon T* FE 35mm f/1.4 ZA Lens is fully compatible with the Sony FS7.

Q: 5. Can someone recommend a good protective filter for this lens?

A: The B+W 72mm UV Haze MRC 010M Filter would be recommended. This is very well made with excellent quality glass. http://bhpho.to/2flTRdU

Q: 6. whats in the box?

A: Sony Distagon T* FE 35mm f/1.4 ZA Lens Sony ALC-SH137 Lens Hood Sony ALC-F72S 72mm Front Lens Cap Sony ALC-R1EM Rear Lens Cap Lens Pouch Limited 1-Year Warranty

Q: 7. Would this work on an a6300? And is it ideal for astrophotography?

A: This will work on the a6300 and will bring everything possible out of that APS-C sensor. It is of exceptional quality so the big bug-a-boo of astrophotography, coma, should not be an issue. The f/1.4 will give you the light you need without undue loss of sharpness. I would caution that on the a6300 APS-C a 35mm creates approximately a 40° field of view coverage which is some what narrow for astrophotography. If you have a 18mm and need something tighter than this will be a terrific choice.

Q: 8. What are it's advantages over the Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L II USM bound with a Metabones IV (witch I do 'already have, with latest firmware) - if we do the abstraction of price and that it's more elegant to not have to do with adapters..)? :Is the Bokhe and softer f1.4 til f2.8 a real advantage for portraits, has it better 3D effect over the latest Canon ?

A: The main advantage of using this lens over a Canon with an adapter is simply that this is a native Sony E-Mount lens. Adapters are very nice and have come a long way, but they still are not flawless. You will get a perfect performance as far as control of the lens and auto focus when using a native lens. This also happens to be a Zeiss Distagon T* lens, which is a very beautiful and high quality lens.

Q: 9. Is the lens barrel metal or plastic?

A: The lens barrel is metal and the focus ring and aperture ring are made of plastic (very substantial stuff). The mechanical quality and build of the lens is only surpassed IMO by Leica summicrons and summiluxes, which means it is very well made. I need more time with this lens to write intelligently about its performance.

Q: 10. Is this Made in Thailand??

A: According to the information we have, our current inventory's Country of Origin is Thailand. Please be aware this can change over the product's production life without notice.

[f/1.4] So i decided to buy a prime lens for Sony a7ii A real glass. So I end up with 35mm for the wise shots you know... I tested yesterday at photoshoot in cloudy condition. It wasn't killer !! The shots came out from that lens were incredible!!! So sharp at F 1.4 but the down side is the CA When you shoot at 1.4. The focusing so fast !! And smooth. A bit heavy but it's alright I shot for 5 hours never had an issue. I haven't tested it in low light but for sure it's gonna kill it. Highly recommended

[f/16] This is an extraordinary lens. Wanting to keep weight down, I recently shot an entire week of images in Washington, D.C. with just this lens and an a7 in a Thinktank Mirrorless Mover 20 bag (total weight approximately 3 pounds). I was simply delighted with the results!

[72 mm (Front)] This is the best lens I have used for my Sony. After the first shots with the lens, the photos were so crisp that I forgot the price tag!

[f/1.4] I purchased this in late July for low light game drives in Kruger National Park. All my "at home" testing has been superb.

[f/1.4] The copy of the Sony Distagon I received, after examining numerous, brick wall and other images at f/1.4 and other apertures at various distances showed no evidence of the right-side lens tilt or decentering that this lens is often accused of. Of course, I don't own an optical bench; who knows what that might reveal, but to my eyes, the lens' characteristics appeared to conform pretty closely to the DXOMark test measurements. This is not a perfect lens. I'd prefer that it had an on-lens, auto-manual switch; it doesn't. I'd also prefer that it was sharper in the corners, wide open. I also wish the aperture settings on the Sony went to F/22 instead of just F16. But that's not a deal breaker for me. I'm very satisfied with the image quality of this lens and have included a few of images with minimum post processing and some cropping in Lightroom; two at f/1.4 and the other at f/16. Basically, you have to work with this lens' strengths. This means, for example, when recording images with the lens fully open and up to f/2.2, center focusing without recomposing and composing with crops during processing. Where this lens really shines is between f/2.8 and f/11, where its easily as sharp as my Sony FE 55mm f/1.8. Fully open at f/1.4, the lens does an excellent job of isolating a subject with a very decently smooth, blurred background. For me, this means close-up work reproduction ratio is ca. 0.2 with found objects, flowers, etc., and some portraiture. I don't tend to do a lot of low-light work, but the capability is there if I need it. Except at low light, where the lens hunts a bit, the auto focus is superb in all modes. I don't do video, so I can't really assess the lens' capabilities for video capture. All in all, this lens is capable of delivering stunning images, so long as one learns and accepts its characteristics and plays to its strengths. If I could, I would rate this lens at 4.5, but I'm rounding up to a 5, because it is really is a pleasure to use.

[f/16] I was shooting with Canon for a decade before switching to Sony and never got to experience the joy of having a flagship 35mm lens in my arsenal during the time. This lens has simply been lens GOALS. I now own a Sony Alpha a9 and the Sony Alpha a7R III as my duo.

I am a photographer that shoots portraits for MANY different applications and genres, from fashion, to beauty, to commercial, to editorial, lifestyle, art, everything. I like to have a lot of environment in my shots, so this lens is literally perfection for that cause. At f/1.4, you can shoot a full-body shot wide open and get the majority of details in clothing and face with a pleasantly smooth background. When I need a lot of background in my shot, no other lens adds a such a sense of dimension and belonging in my shots. Closing the lens up results in tack-sharp imagery. Landscapes are incredibly on this lens. Incredible sharpness edge to edge and colors seem so pure.

The focus is incredibly fast & snappy on both the a9 & a7R3 and even in lowlight, it finds the target. I've heard a lot of things about this lens being heavy for a mirrorless lens and yes - if you're speaking in terms of mirrorless everything. For those like myself, who are used to heavy lenses like Sigma Art & Canon L optics, this lens actually feels pretty light for what it looks like.

One thing I will mention is that if you are used to changing aperture on your camera, I recommend leaving the aperture ring on the lens to "A", otherwise you will have to use the ring each and every time for changes. =]
