The Solid State Logic XL-Desk with Empty 500 Series Slots is a modern twist on the classic analog studio console. It's designed for tracking or mixing engineers who require an analog console within a DAW-centric studio, but don't want or need the integrated DAW control and analog level automation other SSL console products have.

XL-Desk is in many ways a traditional 24 into 8 analog console, but it packs in a wide selection of features. It has 20 channel strips: 16 dual input mono (switchable between main input or DAW return) and 4 stereo channels. The first eight channels have VHD mic pre's. There is an 18-slot 500-series rack built in that can be used for processing or mic pre's. 16 of the slots are empty in this version of the console. XL-Desk ships with a legendary SSL Stereo Bus Compressor module in slots 17 & 18 (hard-wired to Mix A). The rack has its own dedicated power supply.

There are four main Mix Busses (A, B, C, D) with Busses B, C and D able to be summed into Mix A. The Busses and channels can access the 500 racks, and each has a separate insert point for processing. There are two mono aux sends and two stereo return inputs. Direct outputs on every channel, stereo return and mix bus enable convenient stem printing. Each channel has a Cue Stereo Bus section (with Pan and Level) used to provide one of the headphone mixes while tracking. At mixdown, the mono channel DAW return signals can be routed to the CUE ST bus and then summed into Mix A. As a result, there are 16 main faders, 16 Cue ST inputs, and 4 Stereo channels, providing 40 summing inputs (using the stereo returns and insert sum functions you can squeeze in over 50 summing inputs).

There is also a fully-featured monitoring section with bass management (3 sets of speakers + subwoofer), foldback A and B with individual talk-backs for headphone mixes, and a built-in Listen Mic input + classic compressor circuit, with its own direct output.

A: When connected to your computer for recording, you will need to go to computer's System Preferences for audio and select the SSL 2 as your input device during your setup and that will disable the computer's internal microphone. You should also select the SSL 2 as your audio output device in order to disable the built-in speakers and prevent issues with feedback from your mic picking up the sound of the internal speakers. You will be able to monitor the audio through headphones or speakers that are connected to the SSL 2. Q: 7. From an Apple Mac Studio (M1 Max version), into this SSL2+, what cables do I need? I assume that on the Mac Studio, I'm using one of the USB-A outputs on the back.

A: When connecting to the Apple Mac Studio with M1 Max, the Solid State Logic SSL 2+ Desktop 2x4 USB Type-C Audio/MIDI Interface could use the computer's Thunderbolt or USB Type-A inputs for its host connection. The interface includes both types of cables with purchase.

Q: 8. Is this device compatible with the new Apple M1 computers?

A: As of December 2020, SSL 2 will work on new M1 ARM processors, but the extra bundled plugin software is not currently tested on Big Sur.

[47 x 42 x 17"] As any SSL product, this mixer/interface is very well built and has awesome sonic quality! It is definitely worth the price tag! There is a small learning curve, but for anyone whose worked with analogue mixers before and digital audio interfaces, there should be no problem. As a mac user, I definitely appreciate not having to install any drivers and being able to just connect to my iMac or Macbook and start recording right away. I think this product is perfect for anyone who wants a complete recording interface, plans to add analog sound to their recordings or mixes, or plans to add external gear. 5

[< 300 watts] Great fit for the SSL-6 with the power supply. It is not a hard case but beause of that it is not heavy. Useful for carrying this small mixer around. 5

[47 x 42 x 17"] Great sounding interface. The mix knob is great to dial in direct vs DAW sound. The 4K button is a bit over the top for me. It has enough gain on tap to drive an SM7B without any audible noise. And headphone amps work great on higher impedance cans . 5

[89.5 lb] I sold my Apollo Twin after A/B testing the conversion quality and they are equal, however, the SSL 4K button is magical! It adds presence and sparkle that the Apollo lacks and at a third of the price. Add to it dual headphones with separate controls and Midi? It's a bargain! 5

[89.5 lb] I wanted an analog summing solution that wasn't going to break the bank, and that also sounded great sonically, and this console does both really well. AND, the Mic Pres sound great too~!!!
