The Solid State Logic XL-Desk with 8 E Series EQ Modules is a modern twist on the classic analog studio console. It's designed for tracking or mixing engineers who require an analog console within a DAW-centric studio, but don't want or need the integrated DAW control and analog level automation other SSL console products have.

XL-Desk is in many ways a traditional 24 into 8 analog console, but it packs in a wide selection of features. It has 20 channel strips: 16 dual input mono (switchable between main input or DAW return) and 4 stereo channels. The first eight channels have VHD mic pre's. There is an 18-slot 500-series rack built in that can be used for processing or mic pre's. This version of the console comes loaded with 8 E Series EQ modules and 8 empty slots. XL-Desk ships with a legendary SSL Stereo Bus Compressor module in slots 17 & 18 (hard-wired to Mix A). The rack has its own dedicated power supply.

There are four main Mix Busses (A, B, C, D) with Busses B, C and D able to be summed into Mix A. The Busses and channels can access the 500 racks, and each has a separate insert point for processing. There are two mono aux sends and two stereo return inputs. Direct outputs on every channel, stereo return and mix bus enable convenient stem printing. Each channel has a Cue Stereo Bus section (with Pan and Level) used to provide one of the headphone mixes while tracking. At mixdown, the mono channel DAW return signals can be routed to the CUE ST bus and then summed into Mix A. As a result, there are 16 main faders, 16 Cue ST inputs, and 4 Stereo channels, providing 40 summing inputs (using the stereo returns and insert sum functions you can squeeze in over 50 summing inputs).

There is also a fully-featured monitoring section with bass management (3 sets of speakers + subwoofer), foldback A and B with individual talk-backs for headphone mixes, and a built-in Listen Mic input + classic compressor circuit, with its own direct output.

Q: 9. Is the Dugan Automixer still included on 8channels?

A: Yes it does: How the AUTOMIXER works: The TF series AUTOMIXER uses the Dugan speech system, which automatically adjusts the gain of up to 8 mics. Unlike limiters or auto-level controllers, the Dugan speech system lets the engineer control individual levels as usual, even when more than one person is talking at the same time. Also, the audio on the mics is detected and the gain is automatically distributed when no one is talking, so the faders can be left up When one person talks, the gain on that mic instantly rises, and the gain on other mics is lowered. This works the same when another person speaks. When two people talk at the same time, the gain between the two mics is automatically distributed to provide a uniform total gain, and the gain on the remaining mic is lowered. NOTE: • The AUTOMIXER is placed directly after the channel ON for CH1–CH8. • When the Pre button for SEND TO AUX on CH1–CH8 is off, signal is sent from directly after the AUTOMIXER to the AUX bus. • When CH1–CH8 are stereo linked together, the AUTOMIXER parameters will not be linked.

Q: 10. Can I daisy chain six of them?

A: Technically, yes, you could daisy-chain six of the Yamaha DM3-D Digital Mixing Consoles with Dante, but you should use them all on the same Dante network.

[< 300 watts] I purchased this mixer for our church 6 months ago from B&H. We had been using an old Allen & Heath GLD analog board. As soon as we plugged it in, before even doing any configuration, we immediately were amazed at the clean, pure sound. Learning the interface is pretty straightforward, and once you start saving your scenes it is a breeze. Our musicians love having the QU app on their phones and adjusting their monitors on the fly. We also have an assistant sound man who uses the QU-Pad app to make tweaks while moving around the sanctuary. The built in reverb, double tracking, and delay effects are all excellent. The onboard per channel compression, parametric EQ, and gate make it easy to dial in the sound, and you can save your channel presets.

[< 300 watts] I was looking at other comparable digital mixers for our church, including Yahama TF-series and Behringer x32. They all pack a ton of features, but the tipping point for me was the MIDI control over ethernet. We tie this together with ProPresenter and can load complete scenes with just a click. Also, every week that I use this, I find another convenience that exemplifies the thoughtful user-interface design practiced by Allen & Heath. Bravo!
