The Heliopan 24mm RG 850 Infrared Filteris designed to help capture images of how a subject reflects or transmits infrared light.

Infrared light waves occupy the space in the electromagnetic spectrum behind visible light due to their longer wavelengths. Many surfaces and materials react to, or emit infrared light waves differently than visible light waves, which provide the potential for photographs of subjects or subject properties that are otherwise invisible to the human eye. Such images require an infrared-sensitive medium such as infrared film or a digital photographic sensor which may be more effective when used without the infrared-blocking filters that are frequently built over them.

Conventional light sources such as the sun, photographic strobes, or incandescent lighting may be used to provide infrared illumination. However, because infrared films or digital photographic sensors can be more sensitive to the relatively higher energy and shorter-wavelength visible light those sources also emit, the effects of infrared light can be otherwise obscured. The Heliopan 24mm RG 850 Infrared Filter makes it possible to capture images of how subjects are illuminated by infrared light by blocking near-infrared, visible, and ultraviolet light waves while allowing approximately 85% of infrared light waves 850nm or greater into the lens it is mounted onto.

This filter is constructed from Schott glass for increased optical clarity and features a thin brass filter ring to minimize the potential for vignetting while enhancing durability and jamming prevention.

Q: 1. Hi, I have a Zeiss 35mm biogon lens that I use most of the time which requires a 43mm filter. The problem is I cant find a 43mm R72 infrared filter. Would it be possible to use the 46mm?

A: With a step up ring from 43 to 46mm, you shouldn't have any problems. You generally do not experience vignetting (the dark corners) above around 24mms.

Q: 2. Will it leave some soft color? Or will it always look B&W? Or, was the sample image converted to B&W?Thanks,MJ

A: That filter only lets the infrared spectrum of light to come through and hit the sensor. And IR light is Red. So you can convert it to black and white or change the white color balance to achieve different IR color effects. You can do all this in post with programs like Photoshop or Lightroom.

Q: 4. I recently purchased a Nikon D7100. What kind of results, if any, can I expect if I put one of these filters on it?

A: You may not get the expected results! Most cameras would not give you the effect unless you convert the camera, which will be permanent and expensive too! There are some old models which do not have built in ir cancellation mechanisms. Those are the ones which can generate ir effects.

Q: 5. How many stops of light do you loose with this filter?

A: I don't have the exact figures with me here, but on a bright full-sun day my exposures using a Canon 5D MKIV and Canon 70-200 2.8 IS was 30 seconds @ f/2.8, 200 ISO. Hope that helps!

A: The Heliopan 30mm RG 1000 Infrared Filter will fit a lens with a 30mm diameter front

A: An R72 filter will block about 7 stops of light but it will vary depending on the time of day, time of year and the anti aliasing filter that is built into your camera. Different times of the day and year have different amounts of IR light which will affect your exposure times. So you will need to experiment.

Q: 9. How many stops of light should we compensate for with this lens?

A: The Hoya R72 Infrared Filter blocks about 5-6 stops.
