The Royer Labs R-122 MKII Active Ribbon Microphone Pairuses phantom power and founder David Royer's innovative microphone design to record natural and transparent electric guitars, acoustic guitars, electric bass, acoustic bass, drum overheads, brass, percussion, piano strings, woodwinds, Foley, and many other sources.

The microphone is similar to the company's R-121 ribbon microphone but has a faster transient response and a larger audio transformer for more open highs and a tighter more focused low-end response.

The MKII version of the original (introduced in 2002), incorporates a -15 dB pad and a switchable bass-cut filter. The switches are completely out of the circuit when disengaged. They are also recessed to prevent accidental activation.

The microphone's -15 dB pad is positioned before the unit's electronics and when engaged eliminates the potential for headroom-related distortion on even the loudest sources without imparting a sonic imprint on the material.

The microphone's bass cut starts filtering at 100 Hz at a rate of 6 dB per octave to effectively reduce the unit's bass buildup due to the proximity effect. The smooth filter is useful for vocals, acoustic instruments, and closed-miked electric guitars when less bottom end is desired.

The active electronics of the device are hand-wired in Burbank, CA with a specially designed toroidal transformer that delivers faster transient response than traditional ribbons. This makes the microphone useful for drum overheads, percussion, and all acoustic instruments.

A fully balanced handwired discrete head amplifier system uses the specially wound toroidal transformer and ultralow-noise FETs to bring the microphone's sensitivity to 36 dB while still allowing high-SPL recording without the introduction of self-noise. The phantom-powered circuitry provides impedance conversion to handle a wide variety of preamplifiers.

The microphone's proprietary offset ribbon transducer positions the ribbon element closer to the front (logo) side of the microphone to allow more room to move within the prime magnetic field while maintaining a full frequency response during high-SPL recordings.

Uses a fully balanced discrete head amplifier system with a specially wound toroidal transformer to handle SPLs as high as 135 dB with a sensitivity of -36 dB

Balances the load on the ribbon at all times to deliver 100% of its full sonic potential regardless of the input characteristics of the connected preamp. This also allows the microphone to be used with long cable runs with minimal signal loss as well as ensure that the ribbon element won't be damaged by phantom power, miswired cables, or electrical glitches

Uses an offset ribbon transducer to give the ribbon more room to move within the prime magnetic field while maintaining a full frequency response during high-SPL recordings

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Hi. Does this come with its own power cable? It's not listed, so I thought I'd better ask. Thanks.

A: Yes, there is a power cable included with the KRK Classic 5 Studio Monitor.

Q: 2. When I turn on my left Rane 12 it spins but it's not controlling the serato djing app on that side

A: It may be best to contact tech support at Rane for assistance and to make sure that your Rane 12 is working properly. You can reach Rane by phone at 401-659-8192. Their offices are based in Rhode Island.

Q: 3. What is the weather rating, how cold is this tested to work at?

A: There is no weather rating because this microphone is used for normal indoor use only.

Q: 4. Since these speakers come with a preamp, is it ok to connect a turntable that also has a preamp?

A: It would not be an issue to connect the Klipsch The Nines 2-Way Active Wireless Bookshelf Speakers (Walnut, Pair) BH #KLNINESWN with a turntable that has a pre-amp.

Q: 5. The two monitors are active?

A: One of the M-Audio BX3 speakers is active and the other is passive. It comes with a cable to connect the first speaker to the 2nd speaker so that the amplifier inside of the 1st speaker can power the 2nd speaker as well.

Q: 6. Can this be used with an unbalanced stereo mic? Considering purchasing this to shield my AT2022 from phantom power but that mic outputs stereo on XLR.

A: sorry can't help with that one - i don't have a stereo mic so wouldn't know. fethead works great with my ribbon & SM7 though. try manufacturers (Triton Audio). good luck!

Q: 7. Does it come with the case, mount and XLR adapter?

A: The Coles Microphones 4038 Studio Ribbon Microphone comes with an XLR cable, a soft cloth bag, a rigid carrying case, and a simple clip. The elastic suspension mount is sold separately (BH #CO4038SM).

Q: 8. Dear Wetham Posh, which adds warmth and depth R77 or R144 ???

A: These mics are v similar in their quality. The R77 would be a better choice. The warmth you may seek would be more from the mic pre being used.

Q: 9. Anyone have experience using the 4038 to record flugelhorn?

A: The Coles Microphones 4038 Studio Ribbon Microphone should do a very good job to capture the sound from a flugelhorn. It is compatible for recording horns and brass instruments such as trumpet, trombone, saxophone, baritone saxophone, and soprano saxophone, so it should work very well for flugelhorn too.

Q: 10. Is it protected against accidental phantom power like the SE X1 R?

A: The MXL R144 HE Heritage Edition Ribbon Microphone is not protected against phantom power, and there is a warning in the user manual that phantom power may damage the microphone. If your equipment has a phantom power switch that is universal to multiple mic inputs, or if you want to be safe from accidental button presses, a blocker like this can protect your mic: https://bhpho.to/3L0h4CV. If you want a little bit more clean gain from the microphone, in-line preamps such as the Polsen XP-30D or the Cloudlifter CL-1 can protect the mic from phantom power while also providing you with a better level signal.

[Figure-8] Its used to block pops coming through the mic and this does a great job at doing that. I get clear sound no pops what so ever

[3.15 lb] I took a chance on this mic as there's not a lot of reviews on it out there. I'm kinda an ART fanboy, so I figured this mic would be alright. It is! I use it for electric and acoustic guitars and find it to be rich and smooth, like a ribbon mic should be! I find it to be low noise and very balanced. With the right placement (not too close) I didn't even need to eq it! Not having to worry about using my cloud lifter is a plus as well, the active circuit works very well at boosting the signal. Also, it comes with a sturdy aluminum case, shock mount, and velvet pouch. One thing - the shock mount is a little not great - the only thing that holds the mic in is a little thumb screw that pushes a piece of felt into the mic body. It does come loose after a couple of hours. Overall, this mic stands it's own again other cheap ribbon mics very well! I have a cascade fathead and an Se X1r, and this one sounds just as good! And is about $70 cheaper! Way to go, ART!

[-15 dB] I have used this mic for the first time for an on-location recording of a choir, band, and orchestra. I can verfy all the claims that Royer Labs make for this product. The sound is gorgeous - silky smooth and so accurate. The stereo image and location of individual instruments therein is absolutely uncanny! It is every bit as good as any recording I have ever heard from major studios. The crossed figure eight pickup pattern gives great ambience to the sound - you just have to hope your audience is quiet if you are recording a live performance (an acceptable tradeoff, I think). And, of course, being a ribbon microphone, you have to be sooo careful with it. It comes in a double case with a very well designed isolation mount included, a 25' 5 conductor cable, and a suitable 5 pin to two 3 pin XLR adaptor - all you need.

[3.15 lb] Seems to work quite well. Obvious use is for vocals. Not much more to say, other than that it looks nice too. The clip-on part is designed to fit on a fairly narrow mic stand pole, evidently. It doesn't quite work with my set up, but I managed to affix it to something.

[Phantom Power] The re-birth of the ribbon microphone. I had been looking for one for the last six months and was so happy to finally find it at B&H. Thank you!

[3.15 lb] The only way to filter, especially with ribbon mikes. There are others that work well enough, but they seem to block the sound a bit... coming out of them you won't feel a breeze, but the PS101 emits this gentle breeze which is just enough to convey the sound waves unimpeded.
Always use a pop filter of some kind, and the metal ones last and are washable, but this one is the best.

[Phantom Power] This guy is my first foray into ribbons, and so far I've used it with a Cloudlifter CL-1 and an old Mbox2. It sounds great, especially for the price. It's smooth and warm on female vocals and much more flattering/forgiving than the CAD 179 I usually use. (FYI, when I recorded my acoustic jumbo guitar, it was pretty boomy on the lows, but I haven't tried it with other body styles. Another reviewer had good results recording acoustic, so my big assed EJ-200 might just be too much for it.) I'd recommend picking up another xlr cord while you're here if you don't have any extras at home. I had trouble fitting the cord that comes already plugged into this mic into my CL-1, but I easily swapped it out (the cord comes secured onto the mic, so it's just a tiny bit more difficult than simply unplugging the cord and plugging in another - you'll need a small screwdriver).

[-15 dB] B and H had my order ready in no time, and this is a great microphone! Using it for woodwinds and guitar so far and it has a beautiful mid range without too much harsh high end.
