The 12mm f/2.8 ED AS NCS Fisheye Lens for Sony E Mount from Samyang provides a 180º diagonal angle of view on full-frame cameras for an ultra-wide angle, distorted perspective that is useful for architectural interiors, landscapes and creative experimentation in any photographic application. The f/2.8 maximum aperture is effective in low-light situations and enables some measure of shallow depth of field control.

The lens's sophisticated optical design consists of 12 lens elements arranged in 8 groups including three elements made of low dispersion ED glass and two aspherical lens elements to minimize coma and chromatic aberrations. The Nano Coating System (NCS) lowers reflections to provide increased contrast. Its internal focus system enables its compact design and keeps the front element from extending during focus.

As a manual focus, manual aperture lens, it offers a wide, easy to grip focus ring and bright aperture, distance and depth of field markings. A removable petal-shaped lens hood is included.

Q: 5. Is this the same as the Rokinon model? I seem to remember they are simply badged differently. Thanks.

A: I can't say with 100% certainty that they are the same lens, but I watched every review I could find on the Samyang. Various reviewers spoke of them as the same. They appear to be the same lens. I assume that the Samyang company manufactures the same lens for Rokinon. Certainly a common practice in the manufacturing world. I've owned the Samyang 12mm Fisheye for three weeks and have no regrets on the purchase.

Please note that it is currently available for Canon EF, Nikon F, and Pentax K mount cameras. Adapters may be used, however, to get those to work with other cameras -- especially mirrorless ones.

[f/2.8] I'm so glad I bought this lens because it has opened up new photographic opportunities for me and will enable me to take pictures I had previously wondered how they could have been done. The price is right and the AE chip allows me to use all of the exposure modes on my Nikon D610. Additionally, it features full frame coverage that enables me to produce superior compositions. You do have to be careful when using this lens because of the protruding front element and must take care not to damage it and to keep the provided front lens cover on when not using it. The amount of distortion produced is just right and can be a valuable compositional tool.

[f/2.8] I bought the Samyang 12mm fisheye because I wanted a full frame fisheye for creative work and it fulfilled all my expectations. It has just the right amount of distortion for creative work and yet can be used for conventional photos and scenes. It works with all exposure modes on my Nikon and the price was right.

[180°] In conjunction with my Nikon D850 and the Nodal Ninja 6, the Samyang 12mm f/2.8 Fisheye Lens is more than worth its cost! I am using the setup for doing 360 degree virtual tours of real estate properties. If you need a fisheye lens, the Samyang 12mm is an excellent choice! It has my highest recommendations!

[Manual Focus] This lens is truly amazing. It is sharp and the color is superb. I am a fussy lens buyer, too. Do not let the low price put you off. It is well made. Although a fisheye, the aspherical aspect makes the distortion manageable. The only fisheye distortion is in the vertical plane when shooting horizontally and vice versa. We will certainly be seeing more great products from Samyang (using various names around the world including Rokinon). Focus confirmation and camera-controlled aperture make this a truly modern lens. How often do you need autofocus with a lens this wide? I love looking for artistic uses for this lens.

[Full-Frame] I purchased this lens to do 3D virtual real estate tours with my DSLR for superior quality on higher end listings, rather than my 360 camera for quick & dirty tours. The lens is razor sharp, and my stitching software has a lens profile for it, saving much time in my workflow. Bear in mind this is a manual focus AND exposure lens with a dedicated aperture ring, and no electronic contacts. You focus manually, AND you set the APERTURE ON THE LENS, a la 1987 and prior. Again, if you shoot Nikon, this won't be much different than what you're used to. Your DSLR (at least a Canon) won't know what aperture it's set at, so it will read 0.0 on the camera. So even when manually setting the aperture, you can't use the internal light meter on the camera. You will need to (a) meter with a separate handheld meter; (b) take test shots and chimp; or (c) wing it. Not as difficult as it sounds, especially if you have a decent eye for exposure. While this lens isn't a bank-breaker, it's not super cheap either. With the no frills features, it's obvious they channeled all of the price into the optics and build quality, both of which are outstanding for the price (fisheyes are not cheap to make). If you can deal with a full manual lens, I highly recommend you consider this one if you're in the market for a fisheye on a full frame.

[Sony E] I purchased this lens to take photographs inside of caves and to take photographs to be stitched together to make virtual tours for our local history museum. The image quality was good. I did not have any problems mounting the lens on my Nikon D810, even when I was holding the lens by the removable lens shade. The spring loaded lens cap was more secure that a simple push on lens cap. I just have to remember to keep the f-stop ring set at the maximum of F22 for the auto exposure to work correctly. It was good to see a metal lens mount. There is free software that can be downloaded from the internet to straighten out the curved lines.
