Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Is this made of aluminium or steel ?

A: It feels heavy and durable enough to be steel or an alloy. It is not as flexible or soft as aluminum would feel. I put a spigot on each end and use 8 and 12 rods to locate a flash unit inside a flash modifier and extend the reach between a light stand adaptor and the flash, to put it's articulation outside the modifier ... works great!

Q: 2. Does the locating pin prevent this from fitting in one of the 3/8"-16 slots on the 8Sinn pro top handle - https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1382435-REG/8sinn_8_thp_top_handle_pro.html?

A: It depends how you mount it. The pin is removable if needed.

Q: 3. What is the diameter of the rod?

A: The Matthews catalog states that the rods are 3/8".

Q: 4. Can I remove the screw and make it 1/4 20 female screw hole?

A: The Matthews 5/8" Baby Pin with 1/4"-20 Male Screw BH #MA7012 is fixed. For a female 1/4-20 thread on a baby stud you could use B&H # IMSRP112P.

Q: 5. For the 3/8" -16 rods, they cannot be joined together like the 1/4"-20 rods, right?

A: The Matthews MICROgrip Rod (20") is like the smaller rods but uses a 3/8 inch thread not the smaller 1/4 thread.

Q: 6. Will a super clamp spigot, such as the Impact Double-Ended Spigot BH #IMCA100 fit inside jaws of the MICROgrip Head?

A: Yes, the Impact Double-Ended Spigot will fit in the Matthews MICROgrip Head.

Q: 7. Can this securely mount to the Matthews Hollywood baby jr light stand?

A: Yes, it fits any 5/8 baby pin with a 1/4-20 thread on the other end. It fits the babt pin both in line or perpendicular.

Q: 8. Could this be used to suspend a westcott flex 1 x 1 as an overhead light?

A: Yes, the MICROgrip Rod can certainly be used to mount a Wescott Flex 1x1. That fixtures weight is 7oz. and will easily be supported.

Q: 9. Will these grip 5/8 rod properly?

A: Micro grip heads except a 3/8 DIA. rod so a 5/8 will not fit.

Q: 10. Can you remove the 3/8 male threads to make it female? or is it fixed?

A: The set screw is not designed to be removed. It is fixed into place with red locktite and would require a torch to loosen and remove.

[0.05 lb] Actually, both ends are threaded so you can put a set screw in either end, I replaced the male set screw with a shorter one to hold a go pro without looking funky with thread sticking out. Love these, there is a whole range of lengths.

[0.05 lb] Sturdy quality rod that works perfectly. I use it to raise my Ricoh Theta Z1 up above the tripod plate allowing me access to the micro USB port underneath the camera so I can power it on an auxiliary battery.

[0.05 lb] I use these rods in various sizes to hold small reflectors for tabletop macro work. I screw them into cheese plates and use MiniGrip heads to help put the reflector exactly where I want it. Small one pound hand weights help to stabilize the rig. Thanks goes to Joey Terrill for recommending these.

[0.05 lb] It is machined well with a nice finish. Not a lot to say about this simple item.

[0.05 lb] I own a small home studio and I'm in the process of completing acoustic treatment in the room. I decided to mount a distant ribbon mic high in the far corner of the room. To tame frequencies in that corner I built a 1' X 1' X 2 acoustic panel with 703 insulation, a wood frame and FR701 fabric. Rather than hang this panel I wanted to do a rigid mount from the ceiling. I had a number of Matthews MicroGrip arms and clamps but I needed the two CAMVATE mounts and a shorter 6-inch MicroGrip rod to complete the installation. The CAMVATE Table Mounts and MicroGrip hardware allowed me to do the exact rigid mount that I envisioned. Of course you can't do pull ups on this, but the MicroGrip hardware allows me to angle and articulate the exact placement of the panel in a solid manner.
