Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. If this is setup as JBOD, would my computer see it as two separate drives? I have two 4tb Seagate hard drives and would like to use them as individual drives (no raid).

A: Yes, your computer will see the two drives separately. This will work if you are using USB to connect the enclosure to your computer, but if you're using eSATA you'll need to make sure that your computer's eSATA port (and BIOS) is port-multiplier capable.

Q: 2. Dose it come with power supplay?

A: The iStarUSA D410-DE6BK 4U 10-Bay chassis does not include a power supply.

Q: 3. What format and dimensions are supported for the power supply?

A: The iStarUSA Compact Stylish 4x 3.5" Hotswap Trayless mini-ITX Tower (Silver HDD Handles) uses a Flex ATX and ATX12V power supply measuered at 3.20" x 1.60" x 5.90" 81.3 mm x 40.6 mm x 149.9 mm.

Q: 4. Hi. I have 5 pieces WD Green 6Tb from the old DAS. What will happen if I install them in the Oyen Digital Mobius 5-Bay? It just won't start or what? These disks are not enterprise class.

A: None of the drives in my box are enterprise class and the largest individual drive is 2Tb. Running it as JBOD. Drives that were iffy in the G5 are still iffy in the Mobius. The biggest challenge in my setup is keeping the eSATA ExpressCard/34 in the slot. Not sure if thatll help you out but just give it a try.

Q: 5. Is it possible to install two 8TB drives in RAID 0 on this unit ? What's the max storage capacity on RAID 0 ? Thanks a lot in advance. Roberto.

A: I just installed 2 8tb seagate enterprise drives 2 days ago in a raid 1 setup. Only issue was connecting through USB instead of FireWire to get the drives into that configuration. Company walked me through it. They have great support. This is my second raid setup after buying the empty units. Very pleased.

Q: 6. Does this include a power supply?

A: The iStarUSA D410 does not include a power supply.

Q: 7. What do they mean by trayless server?

A: Drives are typically installed in "trays" which then get installed into computer/server/etc. Trayless means that you simply insert and lock a hard drive into position without needing to install the drive in a tray first..

Q: 8. Is this a 10 bay or a 12 bay? The description says both (photo shows 12). Confusing listing. Also, what is the largest hard drive supported? 12tb?

A: This Rackmountable Chassis would have 12 bays.

Q: 9. what is the maximum cooler height?

A: CPU cooler maximum height is about 2.5 inches.

Q: 10. Is this compatible with Mac OS Mojave v 10.14.1?

A: Yes this would be compitable with with Mac OS 10.14.1

[1x 120 mm Fan] This is my second purchase of this device; the first was over five years ago and the power-supply died - but my data was safe! I transferred the five RAID 5 drives into the new unit, set the switches for RAID 5, and they booted up without a hitch. The original unit gave me years of satisfaction and could have been repaired but I decided to buy a new case and am happy I did. The original unit gave me five years of trouble-free service and I had no reason to consider any other brand.

[Desktop] i just bought this because I was having a lot of trouble with my OWC Thunderbay 4 bay with Thunderbolt 3. My drives were randomly getting ejected for no reason. There's some kind of mysterious problem with either the OS or the enclosure. Anyway I went out and got this guy and I really like it so far. Nice solid design. Quiet fan. It's relatively fast with the TB2. I've only had it for about two weeks so I don't know if I'll have the power supply problem a few others have mentioned but so far so good.

[5x 3.5" ] I've had this drive for a couple of years without failure. Yes, as some have mentioned, it runs pretty much continuously unless you set up some power management, but I prefer to shut my system down, and it powers down with it. I recently had the power supply fail in the device, just before the warranty expired, and I used their website's chat to contact them. They gave me the option to ship it to them or install the board myself (it was fairly simple), and I opted to install it myself. They shipped it to me quickly, and I was back up in very little time. With the new power supply, it turned out one of my drives failed, and I was getting some odd behavior from the lights, so I got back online with them, and the quickly got my system back up, with all of my data in place. They were friendly, professional, and fast. Electronics fail, and my experience with them turned a bad situation into a good experience.

[Desktop] We bought this two years ago and have been using it for our archive drive. Presently we have 3 - 4TB WD Red PRO HDD's in it working in a RAID 5 setup so we have a bit of a fail safe. The speed is more than adequate for an archive drive, we're getting full functionality of the drives, and we've had no issues with any of the ports. When the firmware update came out a year (or so) ago, the product was finally able to be set to not go to sleep (which had been a problem) but there is a time-setup for setting the device to go to sleep if it's not used within x-hours. My intentions are to buy one of these for my home, it's extremely cost effective and my own professional photography could benefit from such a condensed system to contain all of my data. The software is semi-archaic, but if I can sort it out anyone can.

[Steel] This is a wonderful case for building a mini-itx server. Love the fact that it doesn't use trays. Just slide the bare drive in and your ready to go. Very high quality.

[5x 3.5" ] Absolutely love this case. I have a couple of other mini i-itx servers and this case is by far the best. Greatest feature is that it's trayless so just a matter of popping in a bare hard drive without messing with carriers. Very high quality.

[1x 120 mm Fan] The device works well via USB.

I have not successfully run it via eSATA. The system hangs on boot in a A2 state, unable to communicate with the drive but I suspect that's more of a controller card issue than the device itself, since it is not the recommended controller but something left over from another project that I tossed in. I can't blame Oyen for that.

[1 x 150 W] The build quality is great. Hard drives slide right into the bays without needing trays or tools. It runs quiet and the drives stay cool. I use it in JBOD with MS Server2012R2, DrivePool and WD-Red drives. I use it for backup so the speed isn't so important to me, but it seems plenty fast using the USB 3.0. Highly recommended.

[5x 3.5" ] Looking for more storage and data protection/reliability of a more advanced RAID and this enclosure fit the bill. With good drives at low prices, and the flexibility this enclosure allows (including easy swap of drives) this is now my main image drive (yes, with nightly backups and cloud storage, just in case) and I can use the swappable drive features to put projects - video in particular - on different drives as needed. Add in B&H free shipping (next day since I'm in Philly) and it's a great combination.
