The completely modular Chrosziel Cine.1 Dual-Stage 15mm Matte Boxfrom Chrosziel Cine.1 Dual-Stage 15mm Matte Boxis built to be strong yet lightweight to fit into your handheld or studio camera rig. Having a matte box on the front of your lens allows you more flexilbility in lighting your scene by blocking light sources just out of frame from directly entering the lens, which can cause the lens to flare, and introduce image artifacts. This particular iteration of the Cine.1 series can be mounted on 15mm LWS rods, and is configured with two filter stages, however, it can be configured to hold either one or three filters with addition or removal of filter stages.

A top flag (also called an eyebrow) is included to block extraneous light from above. The flag folds in half for a smaller footprint when it's packed away. As an added touch, the flag has security holes which mate with safety latches on the matte box, preventing the flag from accidentally falling during installation.

Chrosziel's swing-away arm assembly enables faster lens changes by conveniently moving the matte box out of the way of the lens. In addition to providing swing-away functionality, the assembly has joints which allow you to tilt the matte box to avoid filter reflections, as well as slide it horizontally and vertically when fitting it to your lens, compensating for possible inconsistencies found in complex rigging scenarios.

The Cine.1 matte box housing is constructed from high-impact polymer blend. This material is very rigid and resistant to cracking, yet keeps the weight of the matte box down as to not unbalance your rig. The surround is constructed from aluminum

Using the multiple threaded mounting points, accessories such as side flags, rosettes, a filter catcher, and a top accessory plate, can be attached to expand the functionality of the Cine.1 matte box.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Can this be adjusted up and down from the rails to centre the lens?

A: No, The Chrosziel MB 450W Super Wide Matte Box 15mm rod mount does not offer height adjustment. The Mattebox uses the worldwide industry standard for Rod mounting.

Q: 2. Can this fit on the tilta matte box mini?

A: This would not work with the Tilta Mini Matte Box, which features a different type of attachment mount on the bottom that only fits with its included Single 15mm Rod Support Attachment. This Tilta 15mm LWS Support is designed for the Tilta Mirage Matte Box, and is also compatible with products featured on our compatibility list: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1672672-REG/tilta_mb_t16_ls_15mm_lws_support_for.html/compatibility

Q: 3. Can additional filter stages/trays be added? what about a 138 retaining ring?

A: No, the Chrosziel MB 450W Super Wide Matte Box can only support two filter trays and it is not compatible with 138 retaining rings.

Q: 4. Is it 15mm Studio or 15mm LWS compatible?

A: This is 15mm LWS compatible.

Q: 5. Can this Matte box hold a double width tray like for a 138mm filter or diopter?

A: The Chrosziel Matte Box 456-20 is designed for use with 2 individual filter trays, allowing rotation of each individual tray. A double thick tray would not fit with this configuration.

Q: 6. I see there isn't a step down ring for 95mm- is there one sold separately?

A: Hello Ben, Thank you for your question! Unfortunately, as it stands we do not offer a 95mm step down ring for this unit. We do have a 110mm ring included though. So ideally, if you can find a 100-95mm step down ring out there on the market, you would be covered. We hope this helps and we thank you for your interest in our products. The SHAPE team

Q: 7. Does a Lindsey Optics Brilliant 4 x 5.65" Diopter Rota-Split Close-Up Lens fit in this matte box?

A: Yes, the Cavision 4 x 5.65" Matte Box Kit with French Flag & Step-Down Ring for 114mm Lens (B&H # CAMB45TF114) can accommodate the Lindsey Optics Brilliant² 4 x 5.65" +1 Diopter Rota-Split 50% Close-Up Lens (B&H # LI45651BRS) and similar such lenses designed to fit a matte box of this size in a single slot.

Q: 8. The title say's "Clip on, and 15mm LWS Rod Mounted Matte Box." Is there a way to secure the Matte Box to the lens without using the 15mm Rod to Matte Box Mount Bracket? Could you just clip the Matte Box onto the lens? And if so would the clip on be strong enough to hold it in place when you go handheld?

A: Yes, the adapter rings are strong enough to clip on a lens.

Q: 9. Is there a step down for 100mm? I’m looking to use it on some Schneider Xenon FF Cine Primes and their outer diameter is 100mm.

A: There is not a 100mm option for this. You could look at the Wooden Camera Zip Box Pro 4 x 5.65" Matte Box (100mm, Clamp-On) instead, B&H # WO266800. This is a great option for a clamp-on matte box for lenses with a 100mm outer diameter. https://bhpho.to/2FAi3s2

Q: 10. Will this hold 4mm thick filters?

A: Yes it should. This should hold any 4x4" or 4x5.65" filter.

[360°] Ok first off, B&H kinda vets their stuff so I wasn't heistatant to take a chance on this matt box. Upon opening I was surprised for I was expecting a product of way lesser quality. All this thing needs to do is hold filters and block a direct hit from the sun from hitting the lens. I trust that it can do just that and for under a hundred bucks!

Also i was surprised at it's ample tooling making it possible to remove the top and side flags if needed, which will be a plus for me for I'm trying to build my rig as light as possible for handheld / gimbal use.

I didn't want to spend 500-700 on something like PolarPro base kit. I compared weights between their Base Camp and this thing here with the top flag and a filter. The Cavision came in at about 40grams heavier which is about the same weight as two 77mm plastic Canon lens caps. At this price i'll buy two and keep a spare.

This thing has dual filter stages one of which rotates and the holders features a compression spring tab based mech to hold them snug. I mean com'on!!

And I never usually write reviews on stuff because really, who has the time?

[3.51 lb] the cost can add up if you need all the various accessories, but I think the balance of design, weight and functionality on this MB is better than the rest. Quiet durable and handles serious usage, while also being simple and light weight.

[150 mm Clamp] I recently bot this a couple of weeks ago. I used it on a shoot and it worked amazingly. For its price, it really helped with getting out shadows and getting rid of any unwanted light just like any other Matte box but simply for cheaper. Whilst it functions extremely well, something that is annoying about is that I had to buy a step up ring so that it could fit onto my camera which cost another $15 but it was completely worth it. I would recommend it to anyone who is currently in the first stages of learning how to rig out cameras as it really helps people learn about the usefulness of Matte Boxes

[3.51 lb] I purchased the 203 version of this follow focus (one generation back) secondhand and immediately I noticed the modern design and solid quality. The thing that sets a professional follow focus apart from the lesser expensive versions is the machining tolerances. Chrosziel manufactures this unit with very low tolerances meaning there are no gaps or wiggle room where there shouldn't be. The gearing mechanism is smooth and performs as expected. The marking discs click into place with a satisfying snap. The knob handle is large enough to firmly grab onto but not overbearingly large. It has a slim profile and fits well into cases etc. Don't skimp on getting a cheap follow focus, it's an integral part of what makes a movie, focus!
