Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. I have never used step rings before and am just wondering can they be stacked to use 62mm filter on 52mm lens? Or is there an other option I should consider. Does stepping up like that increase the chance of lens damage considering the filter extends wider than the barrel? Thanks

A: Yes, they work just fine. I would echo the caution on internal reflections.

Q: 2. Will this fit canon lenses for a 5D mark ii camera?

A: This kit will fit any lenses and filter you want to use on the 5d mk ii.

Q: 3. Would these be compatible with a Tiffen brand ND Filter? Thanks!

A: Yes, these Sensei step-up rings are compatible with Tiffen ND. I use 77mm Tiffen ND and use multiple of these rings with my different Canon and Panasonic lenses. I had bought both the Tiffen ND and Sensei rings from B&H and they work perfectly fine on my shoots.

Q: 4. Would this work with tiffen Nds?

A: Yes, it's meant for any circular filters with 82mm diameter.

Q: 5. Can I purchase a 72mm filter and use that one filter on both a 72mm lens and a 46mm lens with the 46-72mm step-up ring?

A: Yes, that's exactly what it's for.

Q: 6. ok so I am planing on purchasing filter with 77mm thread and I want to also use it on a 58mm and 67mm threaded lenses so would the 58-77mm step up work for all 3 lenses? 67 being in the middle? Or do I need 2 separet step up filters? One 58-77mm and one 67-77mm

A: Dear friend, the reason to buy a bigger filter for smaller lens is to avoid vignetting at wide setting. For your case (filter 77mm / lenses 58mm and 67mm) you need two step-up rings. One from 58 77 and another from 67 77. To save one ring you must buy a 67mm filter and use to the 58 lens with step-up ring and as it is to your other lens (67mm diameter). I hope I have solved your problem.

Q: 7. Could this be used on a Sirui 60mm portrait lens for smartphone?

A: No, that step-up ring will not fit. The Sirui 60mm Portrait Lens does not have threads to screw into.

Q: 8. What is the outer dimension of this step up ring?

A: The outer diameter on the Sensei 82-95mm Aluminum Step-Up Ring is 98mm.

Q: 9. If I have a camera with a 30mm thread size, and a 37mm fisheye, do I need a step-up or step-down ring?

A: If your filter/attachment is larger than your lens, it's a step-up. In this case, your fisheye attachment is 37mm and your lens' front diameter is 30mm, hence, you'd need a step-up ring.

Q: 10. Looking at a couple of the step-up rings 77-95mm and 82-95mm, both by Sensei .Do you know the thickness (e.g. fore-to-aft dimension) of these rings?Thanks... Bill

A: They are about 5mm thick which is about the same as a standard UV filter ring.

[Brass] This step up ring is built to tight tolerances, made of solid brass, so it doesn't bind when the temperature changes like cheaper aluminum. Good buy, slightly pricey, but I expect to have it for a long time.

[58 mm to 77 mm] B&H Photo is one of the few places that you can readily get these specialty products. I am using the 82mm B+W (1A) pro filter on a Canon 24mm TSE II lens. Attached to the filter is the Heliopan 82-95 step-up ring (#112). There is NO vignetting at any aperture with this combo. The front lens cap, i.e., the Hasselblad 95mm, works perfectly. All of these items are of the highest quality and compliment the new TSE Canon lens, which is the sharpest Canon lens that I own.

[Brass] Easy way to use the filters you already have on lenses that you seldom use.

[58 mm to 77 mm] Step up 20mm pancake lens to fit light ring and mattebox. It's brass, so it should never bind. This thing is pricey, but at the time that I ordered it, no other manufacturer offered this product.I like this product...

[58 mm to 77 mm] There are not many heavy duty 52-77mm step rings out there, most are plastic or aluminum. This is brass and is seriously sturdy. You could probably use is as an improvised gardening trowel and it would be none the worse for wear. On the downside, it's heavier than any other step ring you've ever seen. I use it on a Fuji 240mm view camera lens. But by the time you pack everything needed for a view camera, the additional weight is not notable and you have a step ring that is not going to bind to a filter, short of catastrophic destruction. The other downside is that it's so good that it's remarkably expensive, but if you plan on using it for decades, it's not really that expensive. I have no doubt that it will outlast me! I have heard that brass transmits shock instead of deforming like aluminum or plastic. At the risk of cursing myself, I will say that in nearly 40 years of photography I've never dropped a lens. :-) But if you're the kind of person who drops lenses, well, you may want a bit more of an airbag. Personally, I think this unit is worth the bucks and I'm more concerned about a filter binding than I am about dropping a lens and in that regard, the Heliopan is a winner.

[Brass] I have several B+W step-up rings, and satisfied with them. But those good folks, at B+W, don't offer this size adapter. So it was this costly item, or one made to meet a price point. It is to mount to my Mamiya 65mm f4.0, for the Mamiya 7II camera. The filter is a Schneider U.S.A. white frost grade 1/2.

[Brass] When I bought a 20mm fixed focus aspherical lens to complement the 14-140 mm zoom lens, I needed a step up ring to utilize the ND filters and diopters. The Heliopan ring is sturdy, easily mounted (don't screw it in too hard!) and allows you to use all your filters on a lens with msaller diameter. An additional advantage is: stacking of several filters does not vignette the resulting image, since the filter ring is out of sight.

[58 mm to 77 mm] I bought this step-up ring so that I could affix a 77mm neutral density filter with my 50mm f/1.4 lens (which has a 58mm thread). There are not that many rings with this range of thread sizes and so after reading all the reviews I decided to go for this one and I have no regrets. The quality of the ring is immediately noticeable when you unbox it, as it's of high-quality metal, that's tough and inflexible unlike plastic models. The ring attaches easily to my lens, although I had to take a couple tries in the very beginning to figure out how to affix it (it didn't seem to fit at first). Once it was first fixed though it has become child's play to attach it to my lens. It comes with it's own protective case which allows for easy storage in your bag or studio (unlike another step-up ring I purchased for my other lens). I highly recommend this product even though it may seem a bit pricey. You do get what you pay for with this ring.

[Brass] I am stepping up from a Caivision 85mm clamp on to 95 mm thread adapterto fit a 105 mm metal B+W wide angle lens hood. I first tried a * General Brand made by Bower and it wouldn't even fit. It was much less expensive but very badly made. The Heliopan has a matte finish and it easily screws on and off and on again.
