Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. what temp do you mix it at, is it the same as D76?

A: It is the same as D76. Water temperature needs to be 105°F. The mixing instructions are on the package label.

Q: 2. Whats the formula for mixing this to develop just one roll of film at a time? I dont shoot film very often and if I made the entire batch, it would expire before I used it all.

A: There's no way you can mix just a portion of the package and get consistent results. In your case a solution could be to use a liquid developer like Rodinal or T Max dev.and prepare just the needed amount when you are going to develop. Rodinal is the best option because is very concentrated and have a long shelf life.

Q: 3. Do you mix rhe powder at room temperature?

A: Yes, you mix the Arista Premium Odorless Powder Fixer (To Make 1 gal) BH #AR4086 in room temperature.

Q: 4. Does 'Dektol - 2019 Version' mean that it's the contaminated stuff?

A: This current Kodak Professional DEKTOL Paper Developer would not exhibit any issues.

Q: 5. Do you have to mix the whole gallon at one time? Should it all be mixed at one time? How long does the developer last mixed up in a gallon jug? When you use it for 1 print developing session, do you throw out the developer that you just used?

A: Kodak recommends that you mix the entire package due to the fact that the different dry chemicals will separate and stratify in the package due to shipping. Once the stock solution is mixed with water it will keep up to 6 months in a full tightly sealed container. You can keep multiple smaller containers of the stock solution if you desire, again they should be full and tightly capped.Regarding a printing session, Kodak states a capacity of 120 8x10 prints per gallon of 1:2 dilution developer. Most people never attempt to use it to full capacity since the developer is cheap and it can be difficult to detect when the developer is becoming exhausted. You may mistake exhausted developer for insufficient exposure or contrast. If your a hobbyist then use it for something less and replace. I personally use it to 50 to 75 percent of capacity and never more that two printing session due to concern of extended exposure to the air / oxidation.

Q: 6. Which fixer to use for this developer? Suggest the most affordable and powder only please?

A: CineStill makes the CineStill Film F96 B&W+Bleach-Bypass Rapid Fixer (To Make 1L). This is a good option to use with this Developer. Here is a link to this on our site. https://bhpho.to/3tBG6xI

Q: 7. is this 1:4 used for film?

A: Yes, this Kodak Professional Fixer can be used for black and white film development at a 1:3 dilution.

Q: 8. The old D-76 produced a clear solution. When I mixed the new D-76 with water, it produced an opaque dark brown red solution. Is that normal?

A: Unfortunately, Kodak chemistry lately has a brown color to it, whether it is Dektol or D76, Kodak knows about this and are working on it but they say it actually has no ill affect on processing.

Q: 9. I'm buying some film and developer - it's been 20 ears since I last developed film, so I'm a bit rusty. For now I'm not looking for some advanced technique, just the basics.1 gallon of developer, how many films will it develop (120 mm)I'll be mixing 1:1. 1 gallon developer 1 gallon water=2 gallons. So is it almost 20 rolls of 120 film per gallon? And developer is single use, but fixer is recyclable, so what is the ratio, how much fixer should I get compared to developer? Like is it 1 gallon fixer to 5 gallons developer? (I'm just picking numbers out of the blue as an example)How many times do you recycle fixer?I don't live in the US so chemistry needs to be as a powder or it will be too expensive to send, and there are regulations on sending fluids. Stop bath I'll just rinse with water or diluted white vinegar, wetting agent I'll use dish soap. So all I need is developer and fixer. But how much per something like 20 rolls of film?

A: Hello, I only use strait D-76 mixed to a gallon. I dev 120 all the time. I can get about 15-20 rolls out of a gallon. But after the first 10 or so, you want to start adding time, like a minute. If negs look a little thin then add more. the best negs come at the end with all the silver thats in the developer. I wouldn't do 1:1. I have always done strait at 68 degrees. 7 min for 400. Pretty sure that certain fluids won't ship. As far as fixer, I re-use mine till its dead. you can start to tell when the negs look purple after 5 min, so I just got a couple min longer....hope this helps

Q: 10. After the solution is mixed, how long is the shelf life? Also, how many times can a batch-size working volume be re-used?

A: Arista Arifix Powder Fixer (To Make 1 gal) will last about six months once mixed. If fixer smells like sulfur (rotten eggs) it is no longer useful, too much film has gone through the fixer.
