Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Does the USB connection power the device instead of internal batteries?

A: Yes, the DR-40X can be powered via USB instead of using the device's internal battery.

Q: 2. Can DR-60DmkII 4-Channel Portable Recorder also be used with Video Camera's?

A: The Dr60D MKII was designed to be mounted to a DSLR camera, however it can be connected to and used with any camera that features a 3.5mm mic input jack.

Q: 3. Is it possible to record from the XLR inputs and the onboard mics simultaneously?

A: Yes. Its on-board unidirectional condenser mics can be set for a wide or tight stereo image, and may be used simultaneously with the mic/line combo inputs.

Q: 4. Can you record from a 3.5mm input? If I have a mic powered by the 3.5 input, will it work with this recorder?

A: The DR40X does not have a 3.5mm mic input. But, what you could do is use a Rode VXLR+, which connects to an XLR input and drops the Phantom Power to Plug-in power for your 3.5mm mic https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1358231-REG/rode_vxlr_mini_jack_to_xlr_adaptor.html?sts=pi&pim=Y

Q: 5. Can i use this to record only audio such as interview?

A: Yes this is a great device for recording just audio. It has Line Level, Mic Level and Phantom Power. Note that you cannot record as an MP3 file, everything will be an uncompressed wave file, so I would recommend at a least a 32 GB SD card. It has some amazing features such as the ability to record a backup track at a lower DB setting in case the main recording is to hot. This is also a fantastic device to put in line before a camera or encoder for live streaming. On the right side you have a mini headphone out and a mini camera out. Each has their own dial to control the output level. So you can plug your mic's directly into this tascam. Then plug the tascam into the camera or another device and know that you are always getting a backup audio recording, and you can also control the levels with the tascam for both the recording and output to camera separate.

Q: 6. record phone call from smartphones?

A: Recording a smartphone call to a device like the Tascam DR-40X 4-Channel / 4-Track Portable Audio Recorder may prove difficult, as the hardwired output from the phone will typically only send audio from the caller on the other end into the recorder. In theory, the person on the recording end of the call could connect a microphone to the second input on the DR-40X and speak into the microphone while using the phone like a speakerphone. There are devices designed to simplify this scenario, such as BH #JKCELLTAP4C JK Audio CellTap 4C Wireless Phone Audio Tap Adapter, which can output both sides of the call to a recorder. The easiest method may be to identify an application compatible with your specific smartphone that is capable of recording the phone call directly to your phone.

Q: 7. I know there is 4 channel recording, but can I do 2 or 3. or is it just 1 channel or 4 only?

A: Jim: It'll record 1 or 2 channels quite well. I haven't used mine to record more than 2 so far. Channels 3 & 4 come in unbalanced on a stereo 1/8 jack. I'm an XLR kinda guy, so I'm not sure about how hissy that jack is. Whenever I've used an unbalanced mic, even an expensive one, I've found them to be hissy. I mostly just record from a single shotgun mic anyway (for the 365 Days of Astronomy Podcast) so I just record mono on Ch.1. The thing does eat batteries, though, so plugging into the 110VAC wall current is advisable. I have looked for a USB power pack to run it with to no avail. I found one at my local Best Buy that should have done it, all the numbers looked right, but no cigar! That power pack will charge the heck outta my iPhone, though! My search continues. They sell an external battery pack for this, but it's just a holder for AA cells. I want a rechargeable unit. Other than that, I love the thing. Very flexible and the audio is pristine.

Q: 8. Can you use this with a DSLR to record sound?

A: Yes, the DR-40X can be used to record audio for video filmed with a DSLR camera. The audio tracks recorded on the DR-40X can be combined with the video tracks in post production.

Q: 9. Am I able to use the line out jack to connect this with an iPad or iPhone?

A: I am afraid not. These iOS devices are looking for a microphone input.

Q: 10. Can I use a standard USB charger and USB cable for external power or do I have to buy the over priced Tascam AC power adapter?

A: You can use a third party power supply, but it must be 5 volt and 2A specifically. The Tascam model is priced similarly to wall charger with these specifications.

[0.03 lb] This is my second DR-40 recorder - I recently sold my first one to a friend, thinking that, in retirement, I probably had no more use for it. Little did I know! Sure enough, as soon as I got rid of it, I had reason to buy a new one. The same things which originally made it a good buy are still true in the 40X new and improved version. The price is still reasonable (especially on sale), and the performance is still outstanding. I am glad the 40X still has my favorite feature from the original (missing on the more expensive DR-100), which is the ability to simultaneously record a second pair of tracks at a lower level. In that some of my use of the recorder was/is live vocal recitals and instrumental performances without the ability to do a run-through, having the lower level insurance tracks is a life-saver. Even when multi-mic set-up and sound check is possible, and I feed the output of my Mackie mixer into the line inputs, the lower level tracks are still very worthwhile. Bottom line: the Tascam DR-40X is a great-sounding, reliable little recorder. I used my first one for several years without a hitch and I expect this one to be just as reliable. I never leave home without one!

[1 x 0.7 x 0.6"] I still have the original DR-40, but it’s pretty long in the tooth at this point, so I am giving it away to one of my students after purchasing the new DR-40X. The audio specs seem to be about the same on the “X” version (the old DR-40 sounded great, so no problems there), but this one has a daylight screen that comes in very handy as well as the USB interface and a few other features. I’m using this for location recording/DSLR recording as well some rudimentary music production (I’m a hobbyist in that arena). All in all, I love the Tascam products! Great value. One caveat is that it doesn’t come with the USB cable (micro USB), so keep that in mind when hooking it up to your computer.

[0.03 lb] I bought this to do voice recording with a condenser mic and it's great. The phantom power allows the mic to plug directly into the XLR ports. Very clear recording, no noise that I could notice.

The menu could be a little easier to follow, but a search for some quick video tutorials told me all I needed to know.

I haven't tried it as an interface yet, but looking forward to that.

[1 x 0.7 x 0.6"] Excellent recorder, crystal clear. Read the manual and I'm still not sure if I updated the firmware. My DAW doesn't recognize it so I need to use a card reader to transfer the recordings but the recording is of GREAT QUALITY SOUND.

[1 x 0.7 x 0.6"] Actually I'm posting this in response to all the bashing this recorder has recently received. I bought mine primarily as on camera recorder to provide phantom power to my AKG 568EB when shooting video with my Olympus OM-D M1 Mk II. It also came with a free accessory kit and turned out to be one of my better investments. The built in mics work surprisingly well outdoors with the dead cat. They also handled the SPL's of a local band that likes to play very loud. Overall it is very light and you hardly notice it on the camera and once who have become familiar with all the settings it is very easy to use. I have experienced no concerning noise issues. As they say your sound quality is only as a good as the person using the equipment.

[1 x 0.7 x 0.6"] This audio recorder has been a lifesaver for me. Super portable and always captures great audio. Easy to attach to tripod/stand, discrete and can be set up near an interview speaker or people speaking at an event. It is straightforward and easy to use. I would highly recommend this audio recorder!

[1 x 0.7 x 0.6"] It works great for the type of price you're paying. It isn't the best recorder on the market but it is good. It simply requires some cleanup on post.
