Optimized for fast shooting speeds and working in difficult conditions, the nikon af nikkor 35mm f/2 autofocus lens weightis an impressive telephoto designed for nikon af nikkor 35mm f/2 autofocus lens weightFX-format DSLRs. The sophisticated optical design incorporates two fluorite and three extra-low dispersion elements to control chromatic aberrations and distortions, as well as lessen the overall weight of the lens. Also contributing to improved image quality, both Nano Crystal and Super Integrated Coatings have been applied to lens elements to lessen flare and ghosting for improved contrast, clarity, and color fidelity. Protecting the advanced optical design is a front fluorine-coated meniscus glass element that, when paired with the weather-resistant magnesium-alloy barrel, supports working in inclement conditions.

A Silent Wave Motor AF system produces fast, near-silent focusing performance that suits both stills shooting and movie recording, which can instantly be manually overridden by simply turning the manual focus ring. Further contributing to photographing in fast-paced situations and difficult lighting, VR (Vibration Reduction) image stabilization compensates for the effects of camera shake by up to four shutter speed steps. Additionally, an electromagnetic aperture mechanism is integrated into the lens design to provide greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with faster continuous shooting rates.

Super telephoto designed for use with FX-format Nikon F-mount cameras, this lens is also compatible with DX models where it will provide a 750mm equivalent focal length.

Two fluorite and three extra-low dispersion lens elements work to reduce chromatic aberrations; improve overall image sharpness, clarity, and color fidelity; and help to minimize the overall weight of the lens.

A Nano Crystal Coat, along with a Super Integrated Coating, has been applied to lens elements to minimize surface and internal reflections for a marked reduction in lens flare and ghosting.

Vibration Reduction image stabilization helps to reduce the appearance of camera shake by up to four shutter speed stops, benefiting this lens's use in low-light conditions. Additionally, a designated Sport Mode is well-suited to working in fast-paced conditions and a Tripod Mode helps to suppress subtle ground vibrations when working atop a support system.

Silent Wave Motor affords quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override. An internal focusing design is also used, where only the internal lens groups are moved during focusing, to maintain the overall length of the lens during use and to promote faster focusing speeds.

Fluorine-coated front meniscus glass element affords protection to the optical system.

Dust- and moisture-resistant magnesium-alloy lens barrel benefits the lens' use in inclement conditions.

A removable tripod collar is included with the lens for well-balanced support when working from a monopod or tripod. The collar ring also incorporates ball bearings for smooth transitions between horizontal and vertical shooting orientations.

Specialized electromagnetic aperture mechanism provides greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with fast continuous shooting rates.

This mechanism limits the compatibility of this lens to the following cameras: D5, D4, D3 series, Df, D850, D810, D810A, D800/E, D750, D700, D610, D600, D500, D300/S, D7500, D7200, D7100, D7000, D5600, D5500, D5300, D5200, D5100, D5000, D3400, D3300, D3200, D3100, Nikon 1 J1, J2, J3, J4 with FT-1, Nikon 1 V1, V2, V3 with FT-1, and Nikon 1 S1, S2 with FT-1.

Compatible with optional AF-S Teleconverter TC-14, TC-17, and TC-20 teleconverters.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Does this lens have VR? If not,is it because it is fast and doesn't need it?

A: This lens does not have VR. Whether it needs VR would very much depend on your usage. It is not just the speed of the lens that comes into play, but also the focal length. VR is much more needed on telephoto lenses than normal or wide-angle lenses. The rule of thumb is that the average person can hand-hold without blur at one over focal length, so in this case at about 1/30 sec. With some training, many people can probably hand-hold a stop better (1/15 sec.) That may be enough for your need.Personally, I only used this lens when I had a specific need for a very narrow DOF, so pretty much wide open. I would rarely if ever need to go longer than 1/15 on that.If you intend to use this lens rather than a zoom lens as your main lens, you will probably use it at smaller apertures (f/8, f/11) at which point the lack of VR could become more of an issue.

Q: 2. is this the same as a nikon 50mm lens?

A: NO!It's a 35 mm

Q: 3. Will this lens work on Nikon D 40?

A: Yes it will

Q: 4. is this sense good for video?

A: It is a great lens for video, I've done a lot of video work with it. Keep in mind that DSLR video is primarily manual focus, and for stabilization you will want to use a tripod (or a rig). The lenses with VR can be great for handheld video, but don't have the low light capabilities of this lens.

Q: 5. Does it shoot video?

A: Yes you can use this lens for shooting video. Very good quality lens for the price. The 1.8 lets in plenty of light for shooting video.

Q: 6. When you video record with this lens, how focused is it, say, on a person? I want to buy it to use for my YouTube channel, and I am looking for something similar to the sigma 30mm lens. How good is the picture and video quality other than that of a Nikon kit lens (the 18-55mm lens) ? Thank you!

A: Since this is a prime lens with a fast f/1.8 aperture, this lens is going to perform much sharper and give you better image quality than that of a kit lens. This lens will give you sharp images and video alike.

Q: 7. can i use this on a full frame? will it be equivalent to 35mm? or is it specifically made for dx models

A: Attaching it to a DSLR with an FX sized sensor will cause the camera to switch to DX mode and shoot at reduced resolution by default. With 'Auto DX crop' disabled and 'FX format' selected, the Nikon D3, D3x and D700 will show the same kind of vignetting as the film bodies.

Q: 8. I'm new to my Nikon D5100. I am torn between this lens (AF-S Nikkor 35mm f/1.8G DX Lens) and AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.8G Lens FX lens. I'm shooting mostly pictures of my children and want something with great Bokeh. Any suggestions??

A: Both lenses will offer nice shallow depth of field for your portraits. Typically for portraiture the 50mm lens would be a better focal to opt for. The 35mm lens on your D5100 camera is closer to what the human eye perspective offers. But for portraits of kids and family I would personally go for the 50mm myself. If you are having trouble deciding between the focals, and you happen to have an 18-55mm or 18-xx type lens, you could set the lens to where 35mm would approximately be, and then zoom it to where 50mm would be to see the differences in their fields of view.

Q: 9. What is the best lens for macro shooting?

A: Please email this request with the camera you are using to AskBH@a href= http://BHPhoto.com target= _blank BHPhoto.com/a for recommendations.

Q: 10. Will this work for my D3100?

A: Yes! I used it on my d3100 for a year or so. Great lens. It will work on all DX (crop sensor) Nikon bodies.

[Nikon F] I keep this lens on my D7000 the majority of the time. It offers small size, good optics, and fast focusing that make it a great companion for any DX body. The 35mm focal length (50mm equivalent on 35mm) makes it perfect for walking around. The fast 1.8 aperture allows for a shallow depth of field with good bokeh and great low-light performance.

[21 lb] I love this lens! This was the first lens after the standard 18-55mm from the lens kit. I was looking for a lens, almost obsessively, that would perform well under low-light settings and this was PERFECT! I would say this is even better than the 50mm fast prime lenses as you wouldn't have to back up against the wall too much. It is perfect to capture dinner dates etc. Also, I have recently experimented with it in a gym (indoor with lights). The big aperture allows me to set to faster shutter speeds without compromising too much of the lighting and quality of the picture. In sum, this is THE PERFECT LENS!

[21 lb] Although I haven't used this lens for still photography yet, I used it to film an event where low-light was a concern. This lens performed great and I barely had to touch the ISO, keeping it at about 500 or so.

[500mm] Very lightweight, fast focus, sharp and makes a great walk around lens !

[5°] The copy I purchased is very sharp, even at f1.8. I used this lens last weekend for a portrait shoot and couldn't be happier. The bokeh is nice and soft with no hard/weird edges. Focusing is probably too slow for action shots, but the motor is incredibly quiet.

[500mm] I specifically wanted a well-priced lens with an f-stop of 2.0 or less, and this one fits the bill. It is quite small and lightweight, making it a great take-along lens when you want to minimize bulk. The narrow depth of field has been a lot of fun to play with (for example: when photographing my dog from about 18-inches away, I was able to have her eyes in focus and her nose out of focus, or vice-versa). It was also really good for low-light situations (dusk with no tripod still had a shutter speed of about 1/60 seconds). All in all a really great lens for the price, especially considering the aspherical element and SIC! It's strange not having zoom capabilities (as all of my other lenses are zoom), but I can't afford an f/1.8 lens that also has zoom!

[Full-Frame] I'm very happy I bought this. It's a good walking-around lens and is a useful normal DX focal length. Pros: This is a light, small lens. It's a good alternative to my bulky VR zoom. Focus is fast and silent. It's very sharp at medium apertures. I haven't used it much at f/1.8 yet, but the few indoor no-flash shots I've taken look great. Cons: The hood does not attach very securely. It works well, but I feel it's always at risk of falling off. Of course as a DX and G lens, it's not useable on my 35 mm or manual Nikon bodies, but I knew that going in. It's a worthwhile compromise given the vanishingly small weight and bulk.

[9, Rounded] Cheap, well made lens that is nice and fast for low-light / indoor photography. Definitely a step up in image quality compared to the 18-55 kit lens. Sure, you can't zoom and it's not wide enough for every situation, but if you are willing to work a little harder to capture the right shot you will be rewarded every time.

[9, Rounded] My kit lens is occasionally pulled out for wider angles, otherwise it's all this guy. The brightness, ability to shoot low light, and the shallow depth of field bring out the best in the camera (D3100). Aside from the expected, the contrast is much better on this lens than the 18-55 kit. That's a huge difference when shooting even the same apertures as you get a better tonal range. I keep the lens set at f/2.8 for a good balance of sharpness to brightness. For better resolution I stop down to f/3.5 or f/4, for portraits or really low light I'll give up a little resolution and go f/1.8. I would love to one day see a prime like this with VR/IS which has totally spoiled me to slow shutter speeds. But the big aperture allows for faster shutters, which means in low light you get less subject motion blur, something VR can't do. There are no cons to this lens for the price, Nikon did it all. However, there are some interesting points. The focus ring does feel, as a popular review site mentioned, gritty. It's odd, but it doesn't affect performance at all. I'm sure it's just a price trade-off to a smooth, silky feel. And, the hood is shallow. Does Nikon really expect this to be shot on FX bodies so they made the hood for a true 35mm focal length? Regardless, not having this lens and only shooting with the kit does your camera a disservice. Put it on your holiday list, skip 50 lattes, donate plasma -- get the lens! -- and have fun :-)
