This 1-stop, 4.5" round Tiffen 85B ND Filter 4.5" Round, 1-Stopblends both an amber color conversion 85B and a 0.3 neutral density filter. The ND filtration provides a 1-stop exposure reduction for darkening the entire image in order to photograph with a wider aperture or slower shutter speed than normally required. The 85B filtration covers the entire filter plane and converts the color temperature to 3200K for use with type B (tungsten) films.
This filter is made using ColorCore technology, a process that involves laminating the filter substrate between 2 pieces of optical glass, and grinding flat to a tolerance of 1/10,000th of an inch. This filter's diameter measures 4.5" / 114.3mm.

Combination of both an amber color conversion 85B and a neutral density filter.
0.3 ND filter darkens the image, allowing you to photograph with a longer shutter speed or wider aperture than normally required.
85B filter converts the color temperature to 3200K, allowing you to use type B tungsten-balanced film in daylight situations.
Related Questions and Answers
Q: 1. Does this have hard stops?
A: No it does not have hard stops, but the stops are clearly marked on the outer perimeter with white dots.
Q: 2. Has anybody tried this filter on an Panasonic FZ300, or for that matter FZ200?
A: Coenraad, thanks for your interest in the Tiffen VND filter. The X Bar effect you mentioned is a product of optical physics and happens with all VND filters when operated outside their intended parameters. VND filters consist of two polarizing filters, as you twist one polarizer in relation to another you create the VND effect. The X Bar typically happens when you are shooting the filter at darker densities and you are using a wide focal length, this will be more common on full frame sensor cameras instead of cropped sensor cameras. To eliminate the X Bar effect you should reduce the density setting of the VND, change your focal length by zooming on more or a combination of both until the effect disappears.
Q: 3. which size for panasonic lumix 12-35mm lens??
A: Kylo, if this is the lens you have:a href= http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/865111-REG/Panasonic_H_HS12035_Lumix_G_X_Vario.html target= _blank http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/865111-REG/Panasonic_H_HS12035_Lumix_G_X_Vario.html/aThe specifications for filter size are listed as 58mm
Q: 4. I've been searching everywhere for a variable ND filter for my Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera. Is this the one that will fit? It fits on the end of the lens right? I have an Olympus 40-150mm 1:4-5.6. then it has a circle with a line through it and a 58 by it. thats the filter thread, right? so if i have an olympus 17mm 1:2.8 pancake lens with a circle with a line through it and a 37 next to it, thats a 37 thread so I'll need this one, right: Polaroid 37mm Neutral Density Fader Filter
A: That is correct. The Olympus 40-150mm f/4-5.6 accepts 58mm filters, and the Olympus 17mm f/2.8 will accept the 37mm filter.
Q: 5. Is this 67mm filter compatible with Tamron 16-300 lens?
A: Yes , this is the right size .
Q: 6. With all VND filters, can they be used with a standard UV lens protector or does it have to be removed before attaching the VND? Would rather be any problems/colour shift etc, using both?
A: You can use a VND screwed onto a UV filter, however... you may experience vignetting when shooting at wider angles as you are stacking filters (vignetting is when the camera sensor sees the filter rings, this causes dark corners). Also, a VND filter is highly recommended for still photography to aperture/control your depth of field when shooting in bright light and to control your shutter speed for long exposures during daylight. For video it's a great tool to control depth of field.
Q: 7. Will this fit a Nikon 80-400 VR AF lens?
A: yes, check lens specs, Filter Thread, Front: 77 mm
Q: 8. For the 77mm version, is the reported green cast, X uneven fading AND/OR image degradation (softness, etc) starting to appear more easily in 24mm focal length or wider (on Full Frame cameras)? And are those issues appearing WITHIN the Start and End marks? At what point aprox.?Thank you!!
A: What green cast are you referring to? There are no known issues with green cast with the Tiffen VND filter, perhaps you are referring to the IRVND?The X Bar effect is a function of optical physics when combining two circular polarizing filters to make a VND. This effect happens with all manufacturers VND filters and does not indicate a problem with the filter. The X Bar effect typically appears when shooting at wide angle and at higher density settings on the VND filter, you will see this effect appear sooner with a full frame camera than with a cropped sensor camera. To correct this look through your viewfinder and reduce the density on the VND filter, change your focal length by zooming in or a combination of both until the effect goes away. The X Bar effect can happen within the Min and Max settings, especially at darker densities on full frame cameras. You should never adjust the VND outside the Min and Max settings.
Q: 9. Can these filters be stacked on b+W uv filters. Planning on using them for 58,72, and 77mm lenses I have with the uvs On.
A: I only stack this with an adapter to accommodate the smaller lenses. When I was looking at this filter, I chose the one for my largest lens and then bought adapters to use it on the smaller lens. This is the last filter I use in a stack and have used it stacked on my uv filter in 77mm.
Q: 10. how many stops total compensation does this require? .9nd +the 85
A: It is a 3 stop filter. You would need 3 stops of compensation. The 3 stop rating on the filter factors in the 85B filtering properties.
