The red oak wood 4 x 5" Pinhole Camera from Lensless features a 9" focal length. Lensless Cameras are constructed of different woods. Each model has a tiny hole (1/64" or smaller) precisely drilled in the front panel. The shutter is simply a small hinged metal plate that the photographer swings up and down to begin and end the exposure. The focal length is determined by the length of the camera. The format is determined by the size of the back of the camera, which accepts the film holder. Since it is designed to accept a sheet film holder, there is no need to load the camera in the dark.

This is a red oak wood, 4 x 5" Pinhole Camera, with a focal length of 225mm, which is a telephoto perspective for this format. Average exposure in bright, noon-day sun is 4 seconds, using 400 ISO film.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. What is the pinhole diameter?

A: The pinhole is 1/64" for the Lensless 4 x 5" Pinhole Camera (Baltic Birch).

Q: 2. DO I have to carry a dark bag to load and unload 1 sheet of film for every picture?

A: You do not need a a light tight changing bag. You can load these holders in your darkroom: https://bhpho.to/2bHTGqE

Q: 3. does it accept paper or just film?

A: You need to use a film holder on this camera, since the actual back is not light tight. It's only light tight once there is a film holder in place. Assuming you can load a 4x5 film back with a sheet of paper, then you can shoot either film of paper with this camera. Hope this helps.

Q: 4. required accessories?

A: It needs a fairly sturdy tripod, and you will need some 4x5 film holders as you would any 4x5 camera. You don't need a Black Cat Exposure Guide, but I find mine handy in the field, and easy to use. The only other requirement is lots of patience!!!Hope this helps! Buy one and have tons O' fun!!!Mark

Q: 5. Hey do you know how wide is slide holder slot? i want to see if it will fit a regular graflok back sliding roll film holder(like Cambo C-243 - 6x12)

A: No, the following unit will only accommodate the two following film holders CatLABS 4x5" Film Holder Toyo-View 4x5 Sheet Film Holders

Q: 6. Will this hold most common film holders? I see someone posted a link to a 2 pack for $100. I would like to try and limit the price if possible. Thank you.

A: Yes, any of the standard 4x5 cut film holders will work quite nicely. I have 15 or 20 of them that I load at one time, so there is no need to do so in the field.

Q: 7. I purchased this camera but misplaced the exposure guide. Can somebody please provide this information? I purchased the super wide angle version, if that makes a difference. Thank you!

A: This is a Baltic Birch, 4 x 5" Pinhole Camera, with a focal length equivalent of 50mm, which is a super wide angle lens for this format. Average exposure in bright, noon-day sun is 4 seconds, using 400 ISO film.

Q: 8. I am looking into the Lensless 4x5 pinole to photograph Civil War reenactors. Currently shoot digital & post process to make them look authentic-ish. I know I will need film holders to preload before going out. My questions is with using the "direct positive paper" instead of film. Does it need any type of processing or is it ready to go like "instant film camers"? Trying to find a way to deliver images on site. Thanks.

A: Direct positive paper still needs chemical processing in a darkroom with traditional type paper developers.

Q: 9. Which Polaroid back is used for this?

A: You can use the polaroid 545i, 405 or Fuji quickload holder, none of which are made any longer. You will have to source them from our used department or possibly Ebay.

Q: 10. What is the ISO for Ilford 4x5 RC paper in this camera?

A: The ISO is about 5.

[4 x 5"] There seems to be a cult following for pinhole cameras with a bunch of new makers coming onto the scene recently. The Lensless Camera Company has been around for several years, it is a very simple design but that makes it a solid performer and it is made in the U.S.A.

Yeah, it is basically just a wooden box and some people probably prefer to build their own but the workmanship at this price would be hard to beat.

I went with the super wide angle version because that gives the classic pinhole camera look. There's tips and accessories galore for shooting pinhole on the internet but I kind of like going out with no viewfinder or sightlines, no bubble level, no light meter. My only accessory is a tripod but even that isn't always necessary.

[225mm] I love this camera. It's elegant, solid, beautiful design, and has changed the way i works in the field. Made of real wood,. it's a beautiful object, very appropriate to the material process of working with real film. Simple and easy to use yet does everything you need it to, has thought of everything without having silly bells and whistles. Tripod mount is perfectly placed and the exposure guide that comes with is a great guiding starting point. I've done one test exposure which came out really pretty good, the next big batch of tests is waiting to be developed. So while I can't speak to the images it's made yet, I love the process. I am so grateful to whomever came up with this design. It inspires me in the field because the object itself is so simple, perfect, and beautiful. It has slowed down how i works a lot, which is perfect. I enjoy unloading and loading the film, and the way the wooden dowels feel. it's put fun back into it. I will be experimenting with ling exposures and moonlight shooting next.

[f/630] Was considering this over another major brand and I'm glad I chose this one. You will need to have 4x5 sheet film holders to use this camera. Yes that requires that you spend a bit more money but the convenience of loading a few holders keeps you from having to break out the changing bag after each exposure. The seal between the holders and camera body is light-tight and I can see that the strip padding would be easily replaced if it becomes worn out.An added plus is that there are two 1/4-20 tripod sockets so mounting in landscape or portrait orientation is easily done. I can't speak to the light-tightness of the lens cover as I always keep my dark slide in place just before the exposure but it appears to do the job.If you are looking for a pinhole camera to shoot large format and are not interested in making one of your own then this is the best bet. Great construction and a great conversation piece when you are out shooting as it catches a lot of attention!

[Red Oak] Received my Lensless 4X5 Pinhole camera in excellent condition. It appears to be very well made with tight joints and beautiful finish that looks much nicer than the photos of it on the website. My Fidelity/Elite film holders fit perfectly. I cannot find any flaws at all. Overall I am very pleased with my purchase!

[4 x 5"] I love this camera. It is beautifully made - solid, simple, elegant, and made of real wood. The object itself inspires me - it's very appropriate for the material process of making real emulsion based film images. Everything you need has been perfectly thought of and solved without silly bells and whistles. Tripod holes in the right place. The exposure guide that comes with is a very useful guide to get started. I've developed only one test exposure and it came out pretty good - the next large batch of tests is in the developer right now. Sharpness is the only quality question to really be determined. But I love the process of working with it and it's completely changed the way I work, allowing me to really slow down and enjoy each exposure. It has brought fun back into my photography. I like the feel of it in my hands, experimenting with long exposures, and even fitting the wooden dowels each time. It's just a beautiful piece. I am so grateful to whomever designed and built this camera. It feels like a labor of love. Yes, you can make your own pinhole, but these aren't that expensive and they are a gorgeous wood and you're set up for success as soon as you start experimenting with this beautifully crafted camera. I have two of them - the normal focal length (approx 45mm for a 35mm conversion) and the wide (which is about 24mm I think in 35mm terms). I may get the superwide eventually.

[225mm] Having build dozens of pinholes of all sizes and types, I decided I wanted to get a commercial version. The wooden dowels used to hold the film holder in place are great, and work very well. This camera is exactly as it should be and brings us back to a time when photographs were thought about, planned, and then made. Using Ilford's Direct Positive Paper in this unit is so much fun! Yes below in my pros/cons I added difficult to use as a 'pro' there is logic here.
