A: When shooting the Tiffen Variable ND filter with wide angle lenses you may experience a color shift which appears as an X bar in the image. This is a common issue when combining two polarizing filters due to the laws of physics. To avoid the X Bar effect adjust your focal length and reduce the density (stop value) of the VND filter until the X Bar disappears.The Tiffen Variable ND filter has a thin profile to avoid vignetting which is most common when shooting with wide angle lenses. Due to the vast number of combinations of cameras, lenses, sensors and other factors we can not predict under what circumstances vignetting will occur and to what degree. Sometimes there is a problem with the filter causing light drop off around the edges but I would think you should be OK with a normal adapter, but you could also see if they have a thin adapter specially designed to minimize that problem in wide angle lenses where it is more prevalent (those in the 24-70 range), etc., but at 40 mm, I'm thinking you wouldn't have a problem either way!
