The classic standard zoom now featuring Vibration Reduction image stabilization, Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f/2.8E ED VR Lensis a truly versatile wide-angle to short telephoto lens characterized by its constant f/2.8 maximum aperture and electromagnetic aperture mechanism. A revised optical design incorporates a unique aspherical extra-low dispersion element, in addition to three aspherical, two extra-low dispersion, and one high refractive index elements, to help reduce chromatic aberrations and distortions throughout the zoom range in order to achieve high image sharpness and clarity. The Nano Crystal and Super Integrated Coatings further benefit image quality by reducing lens flare for improved contrast and color accuracy and fluorine coatings on the front and rear elements protect against dust, moisture, and smudging.

Complementing the imaging capabilities, a Silent Wave Motor AF system produces quick, quiet focusing performance that suits both stills shooting and movie recording, which can instantly be manually overridden by simply turning the manual focus ring. Further contributing to photographing in fast-paced situations and difficult lighting, VR (Vibration Reduction) image stabilization compensates for the effects of camera shake by up to four shutter speed stops. Additionally, an electromagnetic aperture mechanism is integrated into the lens design to provide greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with faster continuous shooting rates.

Standard zoom designed for use with FX-format Nikon F-mount cameras, this lens is also compatible with DX models where it will provide a 36-105mm equivalent focal length range.

Constant f/2.8 maximum aperture offers consistent performance throughout the zoom range and also benefits working in difficult lighting conditions and using selective focus techniques.

A unique aspherical extra-low dispersion element is incorporated into the optical design, along with three aspherical, one high refractive index, and two extra-low dispersion glass elements, to reduce chromatic and spherical aberrations, distortion, coma (comatic aberration), and flare for consistent edge-to-edge sharpness and illumination.

Nano Crystal and Super Integrated Coatings have been applied to lens elements to minimize surface and internal reflections for a marked reduction in lens flare and ghosting.

Vibration Reduction image stabilization helps to reduce the appearance of camera shake by up to four shutter speed stops to better enable handheld shooting in low-light situations.

Silent Wave Motor affords quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override. An internal focusing design is also used, where only the internal lens groups are moved during focusing, to maintain the overall length of the lens during use and to promote faster focusing speeds.

Specialized electromagnetic aperture mechanism provides greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with fast continuous shooting rates.

This mechanism limits the compatibility of this lens to the following cameras: D5, D4, D3 series, Df, D850, D810, D810A, D800 series, D750, D700, D610, D600, D500, D300 series, D7500, D7200, D7100, D7000, D5600, D5500, D5300, D5200, D5100, D5000, D3400, D3300, D3200, D3100, Nikon 1 J1, J2, J3, J4 with FT-1, Nikon 1 V1, V2, V3 with FT-1, and Nikon 1 S1, S2 with FT-1.

Weather-sealed design, a rear rubber gasket, and fluorine coatings on the front and rear elements are able to withstand dust and moisture for working in harsh environments.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Is anyone using this lens on a Nikon D-810?

A: I do. I bought this lens new from B&H. I use it on a D810 and D850. The lens itself is superb. It is awesome in every respect when attached to either camera. I know what I am talking about. I do not exaggerate. I am a pro who owns two Internet sites who demands uncompromising quality. Peter Mancus

Q: 2. Is the lense brand new or refurbished?

A: This lens is brand new with a 5 year Nikon USA warranty.

Q: 3. What is the difference and benefits over the G series?

A: The main benefit would be that the new version of the 24-70mm f/2.8 has VR. Though, looking at the MTF charts for both lenses, the optical design of the new lens has also been improved upon.

Q: 4. Will this lens work on the F5 film camera?

A: Yes it is compatible with Nikon F5

Q: 5. compatible with D800?I tried one, it doesnt focus or let me change aperture..not sure if it the lens or just not compatible

A: It should be compatible. I used it with mine.

Q: 6. I see in the overview that this lens is Not compatible with the Nikon d500. Since this is a rather new camera, I was hoping the information merely had not been updated. So, is this lens compatible with the newish Nikon d500?

A: There is no reason why this should not work. FX lenses work just fine on DX bodies.

Q: 7. I'm thinking of purchasing the Nikon D850 camera and was wondering about what would be a good first lens to buy for this camera. I was thinking of either the Nikkor AF-S 24-70mmf2.8E ED VR lens or the Nikkor AF-S 105mm f/1.4 E ED lens and I just wanted to know which one would be the better choice. These are both great lens and I'm having a hard time making up my mind. Price wise there more or less close in price to one another. But I want to know which one would be the better choice and for what reason. Or would there be another lens that someone could recommend instead of these 2 choices. Thank You!

A: I feel like that's trying to answer whether pizza or ice cream is better! ;) These two lenses are pretty significantly different, so it depends what you're going to shoot. The 105 is smaller and a little lighter, and captures and extra f-stop of light. But it's a fixed resolution lens; does that length suit what you'll be shooting? Is this going to be your only lens for the time being? For *me*, the 24-70 is much more versatile, and giving up one f-stop isn't critical (especially with a camera as good as the D850) -- but that doesn't mean it's better for *you*; it depends how you're going to use the camera and what you're going to shoot.

Q: 8. How's this lens for indoor lower light events with Nikon D750?

A: I just put this lens and have been taking it through its paces. I set the ISO to 1600 and the aperture to 2.8. You can shoot In virtually near darkness

Q: 9. I saw some reviews complained about softer images at shorter focusing distance. and it may caused by significant focus shift. Can some one please test/confirm this for me? I wamt to make sure if it's a good portrait lens at close range.

A: I have used this lens for the last 6 moths and do not see any softer imaging at short distance, although it is not as sharp all-around as the Sigma 35 1.4 Art lens and he Sigma 50 1.4 Art that I use for most of my wedding portraits. The Sig 35 I use for family group shots and the Sig 50 1.4 Art Lens and the Nikon 85 1.4 I use for portraits I do over 80 Weddings a year and 75% of the time I have two cameras hanging on me D810 and a D4 with a 70 -200 2.8 Nikon and the 24- 70 2.8 Nikon these two lens have some downside but overall they are the two lenses I use most and have 100's of very happy Brides.

Q: 10. Where is this lens manufactured?

A: Unfortunately, Nikon has yet to provide us with that information.

[9, Rounded] I had the previous model of this lens, the one without the VR. Since I used this lens so much and my previous lens was over 15 years old, I went ahead and splurged and upgraded to the VR. The VR is amazing, and I mean amazing. I'm in my 70s, my hand shakes a bit, and I take a lot of low light photos. I was amazed that I can hand hold down to 1/20th of a second and the photo is clear at 100 resolution! In addition, as with the last lens, the adjustment is fast and with crystal clarity. I'm very happy I upgraded to the newer model!

[f/22] Was really torn between this lens and the Tamron equivalent, which some reviews say is sharper at some focal lengths. Couldn't confirm the Tamron would work with the automatic focus stacking of the Nikon D850, plus read an extensive review comparing the two that indicated the Nikon had less onion ring bokeh. Had a 500mm Nikon mirror lens about 20 years ago and I hated the ring bokeh so bad I sold it for a loss.

[f/2.8] This lens replaced an older 28-120 f/4 NIKKOR lens that started acting up. I am so glad the old lens was crashing because this lens outshines it big-time. Although the maximum focal length is shorter, just 70mm, it is long enough for everyday use and picking up the wider 24mm (over 28mm) is a big advantage. The faster speed (f/2.8 vs f/4) significantly expands the opportunities for hand-holding the lens. The focussing mechanism is a gigantic leap forward over the 28-120 f/4. It is super fast and accurate. This is the lens I leave on my camera.

An interesting observation I made and hope to learn about is that the lens (which is longer than my old 28-120 to begin with) is shortest at 70mm. At 24 mm the lens is longer, protruding out farther beyond the sun shade. How does that work?? Anyway, a remarkable lens that I highly recommend.

[9, Rounded] Not as bulky as some complain. I'd call it hefty but actually feels comfortable when supporting with my hand for a shot. Little use so far but photos seem to be as expected - great.

[Nikon F] This lens is beyond amazing! Every image I've shot with this Lens are sharper than any previous 24mm-70mm I've previously owned. Plus, using VR I can shoot handheld at 1/4 sec. - extremely fast, 100% accurate AF.

[f/22] Upgraded from the original 24-70mm due to my older shaky hands. Works great, very sharp, much much faster autofocus on my D500.
