Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Does this lens work with the Leica M (digital body)?

A: Yes. This is an M mount lens.

Q: 2. Can I use a Canon Extender EF 2x III on this Zeiss Milvus 135mm lens?

A: The ZEISS Milvus 2/135 is a high performing, apochromatic lens. The addition of a 3rd party optic in the light path will have an influence on the image quality that cannot be predicted. If you need to extend the focal length of the lens, our recommendation is to rent the extender and test the performance prior to committing.

Q: 3. Any difference between this lens and Zeiss 50mm f/2 ZM Planar??

A: There are considerable differences between the two lenses. The C Sonnar 1.5/50 ZM is a classic lens design from the 1930's. It renders a sharpness that is slightly rounded, being less aggressive than in contemporary lens designs, but at the same time not soft in its rendition. Many famous portraits of glamorous and prominent people during the 1930s used this technique to great effect. This lens design exhibits some additional effects, which should be understood to achieve the maximum benefit. The best focus position in the object space cannot be kept exactly constant for all f-stop settings. The photographer might notice a slightly closer best focus in his pictures than expected. When stopping down the lens to f/2.8 or smaller this effect is minimized, so the focus position will be as expected. The special features of the C-Sonnar 1.5/50 ZM are best used in emotional, artistic, narrative images, portraits or atmospheric landscapes. For documentation or technical subjects, ZEISS recommends to stop down the lens at least to f/5.6 or to use the Planar T* 2/50 ZM lens.

Q: 4. I have a Canon 6D, I know there is the EF mount version of the milvus, but I really like the manual aperture nikon mount offers for this lens. If a buy an adapter nikon to EF canon, would the image be affected (In a negative way)? Or it is best going safe with the EF mount version but not having the manual aperture feature? Hope somebody can help, thanks.

A: I adapt Nikon mount lenses to EF mounts all the time without issues. It will not effect image quality at all. I do suggest buying good adapters though so there's no play in the lens mounts.

Q: 5. Any difference between this newly released one and previous one? Is the lens designed again

A: The ZEISS Milvus 2/135 ZE shares the same optical design as the 'classic' version of the lens, with additional improvements in the anti-reflective coatings, a weather sealed barrel and a focus ring that does not telescope, allowing for use with a follow focus gear when using the lens for motion capture.

Q: 6. Can B&H arrange for the recalibration of the focus to wide open at 1.5?

A: Not that I know of. You need to contact Zeiss directly.

Q: 7. Weather sealing for light rain or dust?

A: Unfortunately, the ZEISS C Sonnar T* 50mm f/1.5 ZM Lens (Silver) is not weather sealed for light rain or dust.

Q: 8. How many aperture blades, and are they curved?

A: The ZEISS Milvus lenses; like their Zeiss Classic predecessors, have 9 aperture blades.

Q: 9. Can I use this Canon 135mm lens on my Sony a7rii body ? What is the best lens adapter/converter to use with it,, that will relay info and not degrade picture quality?

A: The ZEISS Milvus ZE lenses were designed for cameras using the EF mount. The lens can be adapted to cameras with a shorter flange focal distance via 3rd party adapters. These do nothing more than position the lens to the proper distance from the sensor so the lens focuses at infinity. There is no degradation in image quality when using adapters of this type, since there are no additional optics involved. Since the Milvus ZE lens uses and electronic aperture, you will need a 3rd party adapter that allows control of the aperture via the camera body.

Q: 10. Does this lens feature a new optical design or is it simply a rehousing of the previous version?

A: The Milvus 2/135 ZF.2 lens uses the same optical design as the Apo Sonnar 2/135 and features an improved anti-reflective coating, a weather sealed barrel and a de-clickable aperture.

[0.05 lb] I am using the lens for more than 6 months on my Leica M6 now, so I am not a pixel counter. I just love it shooting it wide open. The colors and the bokeh are a dream.
On film, the lens is super sharp. I also never had a problem with the shifting focus described in other reviews. I never had a 50mm summilux, so I can’t compare.
But I use this combined with a 90mm summicron and wouldn’t want to give it back. This lens really has a character that’s suits me very well.

[0.05 lb] Very well built and with the excellent novaflex adapter feels perfect on a nex 7. Peak focusing and manual focus assist on the nex makes this lens very easy to use. I use it for portraits, atmospheric landscapes and street images. It has a special look that can bring out gentleness and emotion in portraits. Some of my best B/W street images come from this lens. The silver also looks great on a nex 7.

[0.05 lb] *My experience with this lens pertains to adapting it for use on a digital camera. I have not used this lens for film. This is an excellently constructed lens with a good weight in hand, solid. It's an old design (1930's) in a new lens and by virtue of that the images produced with it have a classic appeal, sharp but not antiseptic, even wide open. It produces that amazing Zeiss color, has a dreamy bokeh, and a excellent 3D pop to it. If you're uncertain about the terms I'm using, do a search on this lens and look at photos it can produce and you will see. This lens is great in lowlight, dreamy in daylight, and if it's too bright out and you still want to shoot wide open, toss a neutral density filter on it. Using the Voigtlander VM-E Close Focus Adapter to adapt it (to Sony E-Mount) reduces the minimum focusing distance by about half and beautiful close-ups (though not macro close) become possible. Unfortunately this lens does not come with a hood included but one can be purchased separately. *Remember that this is a manual lens, there is no autofocus, you adjust aperture, you adjust focus.. focusing on this lens though is smooth.

[0.05 lb] A very well built, light weight lens. I use this with my Zeiss Ikon rangefinder, and my Leica M9. Works great with both. Color rendition from this lens gives nice warm tones to your images. Some what of an old film look to them. Silky smooth focusing ring, and the 1/3 incremental f stops are a real nice feature. Shoots well in low light wide open. No vignetting, except a slight one when used with the Leica M9, but easily corrected. Compared to the cost of the Leica 50 f/1.4 this is a bargain. Only bad thing is that you need to buy the lens hood separately.

[0.05 lb] I am using this lens on a Leica M9 body and also on my NEX 7. It is not as 3 dimensional as the Leica lenses and maybe not quite the same resolution but the richness in the colors make up for it. It is what I wanted it to be.... a real alternative.

[0.05 lb] i use this lens on both leica film cameras and on a Sony NEX-5 for digital. It is very well built and very versatile. I love the 1.5 aperture for portraits and I find the bokeh very pleasing. Some do not like the style of the photos generated by this lens, but I do very much. On the Sony, it is a joy to use and very easy to manually focus with the focus peaking feature and manual assist. it takes 46mm filters so you may have to get a new size if your other leica lenses are 39mm.

[0.05 lb] This Zeiss Sonnar 50mm is my go-to lens on the M8. The lens itself doesn't look as hot as a summicron or what have you, but so what -- it more than makes up for that with its timelessly cinematic feel at large apertures, and if sharpness is your big thing, this little guy is totally a ginsu from f/2 onwards. I miss its 1/3 aperture click-stops on all my other M-mount lenses. It's the first lens I got for the M8 that made me genuinely want to shoot on something full-frame. It also makes for a fantastic tele on the EP-1, with an M-mount adapter. The only thing to watch out for: M8 users should definitely be sure to use a UV/IR cut filter as it seems to be extremely permeable as regards IR light; sans the filter, black fabric comes out looking absolutely eggplant-y, moreso than with other lenses I have tried. Interestingly, on the EP-1 it gives you nicer reds without IR cut (in my humble opinion of course).

[0.05 lb] I've been using this lens for a couple of months now. I can't compare it to the 50mm summilux, since I never used it, but I am super happy. I am using it on a Leica M6. It produces beautiful colors on film.
I haven't really recognized a focus shift yet. Even when fully open, everything has been in focus as I wanted it to be. For me, this lens definitely has a character I don't want to miss again. You can check images on my instagram account @phlo.kah
