Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Is this lens (MFR #2096-550) compatible with Nikon D7000? The compatibility list shows D7100 and D7200 so I assume it is, but wanted to be sure.

A: Yes. Due to its manual-only design, this will work with most Nikon DSLRs. :)

Q: 2. Does this lens needs specific lens hood for or we can use existing lens hood from zeiss?

A: The lens hood for that lens is not out and there is no part number yet. There will be one and it is recommended to use that lens hood verses a 49mm screw on lens hood.

Q: 3. Does this lens couple with Leica Rangefinder?

A: Yes this is Leica M-Mount Lens

Q: 4. Does this lens have the coded 6-bit contacts? I want to mount this to a Leica SL2S using a leica m to L mount adapter.

A: No.

Q: 5. Does this lens have internal focusing? I would be using it with a matte box and would like to keep the option of filters open.

A: The ZEISS Milvus 1.4/25 features internal focusing and there is no front telescoping of the barrel while focusing.

Q: 6. How does this lens match with the Leica-M240 body with a the EVF2? Can the EVF2 see the full frame effect of the 15mm lens?

A: One of the advantages of the EVF2 is when using wide angle or telephoto lenses, you see the field of view of the lens mounted on the camera. For use with the 15mm f/2.8 ZM lens, the EVF2 will be ideal.

Q: 7. why does this lens need a Center Filter?

A: The center filter is meant to average the light distribution from the center of the lens to the frame edges to minimize vignetting - especially in areas of even density, such as blue sky, seamless backgrounds etc. The use of the center filter was more important in the pre-digital days, when post correction was more difficult.

Q: 8. Will this lens work on the Fuji GF cameras?

A: You can use adapter to connect lenses with Leica M-mount to Fujifilm GFX medium format cameras. Type in our search bar Leica M Lens to Fujifilm G-Mount Camera Adapter to find multiple options.

Q: 9. How does this lens perform wide open for astrophotography?

A: You can judge the performance of the Milvus 1.4/25 lens by reviewing the MTF chart in the data sheet. ZEISS provides the performance at wide open and stopped down, so you can compare the results to determine both the sharpness at f/1.4 and at f/4. The lens performs very well at wide-open and would be well suited for astrophotography. The data sheet is available at: a href= https://www.zeiss.com/content/dam/camera-lenses/files/service/download-center/datasheets/milvus-lenses/datasheet-zeiss-milvus-1425.pdf target= _blank https://www.zeiss.com/content/dam/camera-lenses/files/service/download-center/datasheets/milvus-lenses/datasheet-zeiss-milvus-1425.pdf/a

Q: 10. With an adapter canon to sony FE, does it share metadata with a FX9, does it let the Gyro data and recognize the focal lenght?

A: From information made available to us, adapted lenses that have electronic contacts/communication will share lens EXIF metadata, such as focal length and manufacturer. In regards to Catalyst stabilization, according to Sony, the FX9's gyro-data for post-processing is recorded using the camera's gyroscope and the lens will likely have no bearing on it.

[0.05 lb] This lens is not for everyone. It is ungodly heavy. It is expensive. It is comparatively huge. It is obviously manual focus. However, everything the best Zeiss lenses have, is there with this lens. The famous Zeiss color that is so natural. The sharpness. The "pop". It is better than all of the competition in either mount (I have used most of all of the Nikon and Canon 24mm lenses as well as the Sigma 24 art lens), but I can not tell you whether it is better enough given the cost/size/weight and being manual focus as that is a decision everyone has to make on their own. I think if you are a discriminating photographer who will use this lens for landscape, then this the obvious choice.

[0.4 oz / 11.0 g] I had heard so much about this lens, its sharpness, lack of CA, excellent contrast that I decided to give it a try. I must say it is very close to my Otus 28mm in many ways. Nice to have its weather-sealed capabilities too. Thank you Zeiss for bringing excellence in the 25mm range.

[0.05 lb] There’s most likely a limited market for this lens. It’s big, heavy, and manual focus only. But, if you are into landscape astrophotography, and enjoy tripod work, I haven’t found a better selection. Yes, you’ll have a lot of explaining to do when the bill comes, so think about it first.
Maybe start slowly, you can also consider the 35mm f/2.0 for ½ the price. Just as good, but different. They both take on their own personality in the dark. Now then, for the negative, the lens cap on this lens is an embarrassment to the entire Zeiss family! Seriously? The lens is a 5+, though. Both of them.

[0.4 oz / 11.0 g] in my limited use so far,i have been very impressed with the sharpness and the true to life colors right out of camera and lens combination.very smooth manual focusing and dof scale seems right on the money.if you can afford it and dont mind manual focusing, this should be a great lens for you, especially for landscapes and interiors also......i am wanting to test it on the milky way and will doing so soon!

[0.4 oz / 11.0 g] I dont know how to begin but let me just say that my jaw hurts right now because of how much it dropped to the floor after using it first time.

When I took my first few test shot I could not believe my eyes just how detailed, razer sharp, clear and that 3d pop I was getting. I was zooming in insane amount in the pictures seeing details like dust and microfibers that I have NEVER seen before in ANY lens that I shot with. This is my first Zeiss lens and definitely will not be the last.

The focus ring is so buttery smooth; an absolute joy to manual focus. If you think you do not like manual focus just wait until you use this baby because it will make you totally forget about it and LOVE manual focus. There is not enough space in this review to talk about how blown away I was with the image quality on my D810, build quality  and pure art of this lens. Its so beautiful I can stare at it all day. I can now understand why it costs so much because the images you will get out of it are totally justified.

That zeiss pop is REAL! I cant wait to take it to the snowy mountains to capture breathtaking images in february. Make sure you get a nice carrying case for it to protect this beauty and accidental warranty! Thank you Zeiss for opening my eyes :)

[0.4 oz / 11.0 g] Since I have retired I always wanted to try a manual focus Zeiss lens. The Milvus line has made that possible. The 25/1.4 is the newest addition so I expected much the same from this lens as my others (18,35,50,135) and I was not disappointed. I use these lens on my D850 and have learned to hand hold though I mostly shoot using a tripod. The rangefinder on the D850 is very good, much better than the D810's rangefinder. I rely on the rangefinder when hand holding, but use live view w/focus peaking when on a tripod.
This lens is heavy and one of the larger lens in my lineup, but still a joy to use. I have now retired my 24-70mm/2.8G and 50mm/1.4G Nikkors.
The image below was shot at f1.4 during low light conditions handheld at 1/200s using the D850/battery grip. My left hand moves under the lens with 2 fingers near the lens hood giving me the steadiness I need to hand hold. As of this review LR does not have the 25/1.4 profile added yet, but I did not need it for this shot.
The Zeiss Milvus lenses are not for everyone. I grew up with manual focus lens so this was not something new I had to learn. But it has brought back the joy and has forced me to take my time. And being retired I have no clock to report.

[0.05 lb] Big. Solid. Beautiful. Extremely sharp but pleasant rendering.

[0.05 lb] Short answer: it's phenomenally good - the best lens I've used in this range (24-25mm). It beats the older ZE 25/2, ZF 25/2.8, and Canon 24/3.5 tilt-shift "ii" in corner to corner resolution. Great color; very nice 3D wide open or slightly stopped down.

As hinted above, it's excellent into the corners and frame ends; much superior to the ZE 25/2 that it replaces, which goes a bit soft at the frame ends. With focus very close, bokeh at f/1.4 is soft and attractive; with focus farther out (let's say 3-6 feet away), bokeh is sometimes not as good with subjects such as distant trees. With torture-test subjects such as twigs against open sky, there is a small amount of purple fringing, but I've not noticed it in the vast majority of compositions.

It's large, heavy, and bulky, but you likely already know that. I'm well pleased with the purchase, which has erased my former lust for an Otus 28. I use it exclusively on Sony A7RII and III with a Metabones adapter.

[0.4 oz / 11.0 g] I knew going in that this lens is heavy--very heavy. What you get for that is astonishing clarity and brilliant contrast. I'm using this on my new D850 and the combination is unbeatable with a camera of this size. Use a tripod and focus very carefully--with this level of detail, missed focus really shows. The wide f1.4 aperture helps with focusing.

[0.05 lb] This lens is very sharp, has great contrast and great colors.  Bright screen and wide angle make manual focus easy.  There is minimal chromatic aberration visible using a D-850 and 100% mag.  This is extremely minimal and easily fixed in Lightroom.  Images have are great and have a deep, rich look, with feeling of depth I see in other Zeiss lenses.  This lens is much sharper , has better contrast, and richer colors than my Nikon 24mm 1.4.  There are three down sides:  the minimal chromatic aberration, the weight, and manual focus.  I dont miss the autofocus much except for kids when theyre perpetual motion machines and manual focus really isnt an option.
