Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Hi, is this lens suitable for astrophotography?

A: High quality, (Zeiss) fast (f/2.8 or faster) wide angle (full frame sensor 35mm or wider) lenses are what you need for astrophotography. This lens ticks all the boxes.

Q: 2. Is anyone using this lens on a Nikon D800? If so, how easy or hard are you finding it to nail focus where the subject is not perfectly still?

A: It takes some practice. I did a shoot recently with the milvus and I missed a lot of shots. I made it a point to keep the lens on my camera most of the time. I find using the guage in the view finder helps a lot.

Q: 3. This one (Milvus) or that one (Loxia) for Sony A7R II.

A: I purchased for the Canon 5DRs

Q: 4. how would this lens do with the Canon C70 cinema camera? i realise that it is manual focus but then so are most cinema lenses

A: The ZEISS Milvus 25mm f/1.4 ZE Lens for Canon EF will be compatible with the Canon Mount Adapter EF-EOS R on the Canon EOS C70 Cinema Camera (RF Mount), and it offers excellent results.

Q: 5. How sharp is this wide open?

A: Pretty sharp. Its the sharpest wide angle lens Ive ever owned. As the mtf data will suggest, it will outperform Nikons similar offerings wide open.

Q: 6. How does this lens perform wide open for astrophotography?

A: You can judge the performance of the Milvus 1.4/25 lens by reviewing the MTF chart in the data sheet. ZEISS provides the performance at wide open and stopped down, so you can compare the results to determine both the sharpness at f/1.4 and at f/4. The lens performs very well at wide-open and would be well suited for astrophotography. The data sheet is available at: a href= https://www.zeiss.com/content/dam/camera-lenses/files/service/download-center/datasheets/milvus-lenses/datasheet-zeiss-milvus-1425.pdf target= _blank https://www.zeiss.com/content/dam/camera-lenses/files/service/download-center/datasheets/milvus-lenses/datasheet-zeiss-milvus-1425.pdf/a

Q: 7. Does this lens have hard stops?

A: Yes the lens does have hard stops and you can use the aperture ring manually if you so choose; however, there is also an option to de-click the aperture ring using a tiny tool that is included with the lens. It is very simple to do. So if you are shooting video or you just prefer to not have hard stops than you can use the lens this way. If you prefer hard stops it can do that too! Best of both worlds

Q: 8. Is this manual aperture

A: No, the aperture on the ZEISS Milvus 50mm f/1.4 ZE Lens for Canon EF is controlled from the Canon camera body.

Q: 9. Focus confirmation?

A: Yes, the ZEISS Milvus ZF.2 lenses are compatible with the focus confirmation feature, which is engaged when holding the shutter button half way down while focusing the lens.

Q: 10. Does the lens hood come off?

A: Yes, the hood is removeable.

[0.035 lb] The lens itself is wonderful. Feels substantial and well built. The focus ring is very nice. I worked with it for a bit over a week and was unable to get the crisp focus I wanted, to no fault of the lens.
My eyes are not that great (I wear glasses and every year the prescription changes for the worse, it seems) and found trying to focus was driving me nuts. I tried several different diopter strengths for the eyecup (and the adjustment knob on the camera) and just could not see well enough to focus the lens. I'm very sad, it just didn't work for me.

[4.7 x 4.2 x 3"] This lens has ridiculously good image quality. It's heavy, it costs more than most 50mm lenses, but that's where the cons end. It is THE sharpest lens I've owned, and I've owned many 50mm lenses. It's even sharper than my 3 macro lenses. In fact at one time I had 7 50mm lenses in my bag because I'm a nut. I've owned all the Nikon 50mm lenses since Ai-S and this surpasses them all pretty easily. The color is the best of my lenses and all I shoot is pro level primes. The background blur of this Zeiss is unexpectedly creamy even though it's got an aspheric element. For the best background in the Milvus line, look to the 85mm. Depth rendering on the 50mm is very good, micro contrast is excellent. The focus throw is long and very precise, the aperture blades can be declicked for video use. It's weather sealed unlike the Otus or the Sigma Art lens. It is an exceptional lens. It is heavy, about 2 ounces more than the Sigma Art, yet 3 1/3 ounces less than the Otus lens but still not huge. The resistance to flare is the best I've ever seen. If you want flare for artistic reasons, you'll have to use another lens, this one won't do it. It's go floating elements that adjust for maximum image quality at close and far distances so it is smokin' at all focus distances. (I've tested) It's got very low distortion. I noticed just a tiny bit of barrel distortion at close distances, but it was gone at medium distances. It has no CA in the critical plane of focues, and just a little bit of secondary CA in the OOF elements, but it doesn't detract from the image. I'd rather have a little LOCA and stellar everything else, than no LOCA and nothing special otherwise. This lens is magical. It's pricey, but if you think it's just a couple hundred more to get this fantastic Zeiss build quality and precision, then it's worth it.

[0.035 lb] This is the best lens I have purchased without a doubt. Focusing the lens was not as daunting a task as some people make it out to be. I was amazed at the results when I shot inside churches at ISO 3200 because where I used to see noise in the dark parts of the pictures, especially in the ceilings and corners, there was not any noise to speak of. I like this lens so much that I now do not use my zoom lenses (Nikon 24-70mm f2.8 and 16-35mm f4.0). I also don't use apertures above f5.6 because this lens is so sharp. This is the first I have even written a review because I have never been this impressed enough with a single product. I would tell anyone thinking about acquiring this lens to just do it, you won't regret the results.

[4.7 x 4.2 x 3"] I am a forensic engineer. I use this lens in my work, both in the field and in the lab with studio lighting. I have had the lens for two weeks and have used it on one project that involved field work and studio conditions. The lens does an excellent job of rendering very fine color gradations. I have found that very little correction is needed in Lightroom CC. I have a Zeiss Milvus 35 mm F/2 also. The focusing with the 50 mm is different especially at closer distances and takes some getting used too. The key for me is excellent performance under poor weather conditions with difficult lighting. Six months and 1000 photos from now I will have a better idea about the lens, but it is a keeper.

[0.035 lb] One of the best 50mm out there. Outstanding bokeh, beautiful colors, extremely well made. I sometimes miss the AF. This Zeiss is a nice to have lens, but there are others out there that are *almost* as good, for a much lower price.

[4.7 x 4.2 x 3"] If you've used Zeiss lenses before, than you know about the experience. This is manual focusing optimized ! The lens is designed and made beautifully. All metal - there is a heft to it; not bothersome. It actually feels great in hands, even when mounted on a 5D iii. The rubber focus ring is very well-damped. The operation is extremely smooth, just as expected. The lens is sharper wide open, much sharper than my 50L is at f1.4. The colors and the micro-contrast are very pleasing. It has very little distortion. Some vignetting, typical for any large aperture lens, but easily correctable in post processing if you don't like it. All in all, a great Milvus, and for me, a preferred alternative to the Otus 55. 50mm is my favorite focal length on a FF body, and this will remain my favorite 50 for years to come. Highly recommended !

[0.5 oz / 14.2 g] I received this Zeiss Milvus 50/1.4 today, and immediately did some testing against the Nikkor 50/1.2 that I bought just a couple of months ago.

Upon initially testing my recently purchased Nikkor, I was very impressed with the resolution from apertures of 2.0 to f/11.  Images taken at wider apertures than f/2.0 were acceptable with a little post-added sharpening and contrast.  Apertures from f/4.0 to f/8.0 I judged as excellent.

However, upon testing the Zeiss Milvus, I was blown away!  Firstly, the quality of design and construction is really unbelievable.  It feels like the highest precision instrument I have ever held  in my hands - it is truly amazing!  It feels too beautiful and flawless to actually use.  However, I did test it.

I setup my Spyder LensCal target 8’ 2” from my Nikon D850.  After mounting my D850 to my RRS tripod, I used a magnified Live View to focus the lens and took photographs at each aperture using a 3-second delay and the electronic shutter.

I then mounded my Nikkor 50mm f/1.2 and took another same set of photographs.  The Milvus was much sharper at all apertures.  I am inserting images of the comparison of those photographs - these are straight out of camera with no alterations other than being 100% crops.  These images may be too small here to adequately reveal the significant differences in resolution.  This lens is incredible, and should easily last a lifetime (as it has no autofocus mechanism to wear out).
