The Tiffen 58mm Soft Contrast Filteris a contrast reduction filter that darkens highlights while maintaining the density of shadows within a scene. The effect of a light absorbing element within this filter is apparent in highlights without requiring a change in overall exposure. Details within bright areas are made more visible without a similar effect on dark areas. Tiffen Soft Contrast filters are available in grades numbering one through five. Each larger numbered grade corresponds to a stronger effect.

This filter is made using ColorCore technology, a process that involves laminating the filter substrate between 2 pieces of optical glass, grinding flat to a tolerance of 1/10,000th of an inch, and then mounting to precision metal rings.

Q: 1. As far as the filters go, how do I know which one to buy. I mean this in a the sense that I am on sure which one will fit my lens and not the effect range.

A: We list most all current lenses on our website, one method would be to reference the lens there and under the specifications we post the filter thread size. As well under the Accessories tab we post compatible/recommended filters which will also designate the size. Another method is to remove the lens cap from the lens, and on the underneath side it will reference the lens' filter thread size. A: Hi Aquiles,According to Tiffen, the 2A absorbs all ultraviolet light, whereas the 1 absorbs only 71% of UV. Film and sensors detect UV as additional brightness in subjects like the sky even though our eyes don't, so a UV filter renders photos that are closer to what we perceive. I think you will see slightly richer colors overall with the 2A, but the 1 would make a noticeable improvement.You won't be able to see a difference by just looking through the filter because our eyes naturally filter out the UV.If the extra cost bugs you, go with the Type 1. It will improve your photos as compared with no filter. If you want to get the bluest sky, the Type 2A is better. Incidentally, a polarizing filter can do an even better job of darkening the blue in the sky.Jim

A: I believe if you stack 3 82mm filters on 16mm on a full frame sensor, it's likely to vignette. You can consider using an over-sized CP with adapter instead. Another way is to buy an extra piece of ND filter of higher ND value. I believe less glass is best.

A: The kit is designed to fit on lenses with a 58mm filter threading. If your wife has the 18-55mm kit lens this filter set would be a proper fit. If she has a different lens you would need to check on the filter/cap size before purchasing to make sure the size is right.
