Q: 1. FTZII manual states not carry Z8 with only shoulder strap support if lens1300grams-Is lens+TC14E+FTZ ok on shoulder strap?

A: It is best not to use a shoulder strap with the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 300mm f/4E PF ED VR Lens and attached to the FTZ adapter and a teleconverter. Best is to get either one of these, https://bhpho.to/448IlKO . And use a strap attached to that like,https://bhpho.to/43NtXYL .

Q: 2. I've found that with my D500, I've had to dial in a +7 or +8 to achieve fine focus. With the 1.4TC, I need +10. But with those adjustments, the lens focuses very sharp and fast. Anyone else experiment with the new cameras fine focus adjustments with this lens?

A: I have played with them in a few models. It's very helpful! I would say since you do have to make that much of an adjustment to get sharp results with that lens you may want to get the lens looked at.

Q: 3. I was wondering of the 3 different Nikon Teleconvertors the 1.4x the 1.7x or the 2.0x teleconvertors. Which one would be the better choice to use with this Nikkor 300mm prime lens. If I had to choose just one what would be the best choice and the reason why? Thank You!

A: Certainly not the 2.0. You will have issues with the autofocus. Not to mention you will have way too much DOF to ever blur a background.

Q: 4. Most of the reviews I have read are with a full frame camera (e.g. D610). Will it work with my D7100, and with the TCE14 ll?

A: Yes, thats the body I use, also with the TCE14 II is very sharp.

Q: 5. Will it work with d80?

A: It will not work properly on the D80. Because of the electronic diaphragm, it will always shoot at f/4.

Q: 6. Will this lens be among those as recommended for use with the D800 body? If so, will it also be compatible with the TC-17E II

A: As this is a new pro-level telephoto prime, it should be more than suitable for the D800. The lens is compatible with the TC-17E II (including autofocus with the D800).

Q: 7. Would this lens be a good choice for videoing ice skating competitions and do you always need a teleconverter for this lens?

A: Yes, the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 300mm f/4E PF ED VR Lens is a great lens for recording ice skating competitions. It offers a long focal length and wide aperture that offers great quality in low light. It can be used as is, no teleconverter is required.

Q: 8. Is this made in Japan?

A: No, the country of origin for this lens is China.

Q: 9. Many lens owners and test reviewers, including Camera Labs, have observed and documented on the web that the vibration reduction system in this lens will not properly function between 1/80th second to 200th second, and produces blurred images at these speeds. Camera Labs reviews go so far as to not recommend this lens until the vibration reduction problem is corrected. All indicate this problem has been brought to Nikons attention without response. How will B&H assure persons purchasing this lens will receive a properly functioning lens?

A: All of our customers have the benefit of our 30 day return period should there be any dissatisfaction with a purchase.

Q: 10. Is this lens weather sealed?

A: There is a seal at the mount but not throughout the lens.

[0.17 lb] I've tried this lens a week ago indoor and outdoor. The lens is tack sharp and focuses fast. With the TC-14EIII there's no difference in focusing speed (Nikon D750). With the TC-17 there's a little slow down but not important, even for tracking birds in flight. With the TC-20EIII there's a marginal slowdown in focusing in good light, a bigger slowdown in a cloudy day.In any case, sharpness is not effected with the TC-14 and a TC-17. With the TC-20, there's a marginal degradation but it's useful anyway. The lens is surprisingly light weighted and a pleasure to use. When shooting into bright light (or sun directly) the lens drops substantially in contrast, and creates a rainbow of flare when the sun is in or very close to the frame.

[0.17 lb] This is the second LensCoat product I've purchased. This one was purchased for a Nikon 300 prime lens, primarily to protect it from light bangs and scratches when I'm out in the field and, secondarily, to make the lens less noticeable to wildlife when I'm shooting. It's a win on both counts. Easy to fit over the lens and holds up well.

[0.17 lb] I had two LensCoat lens covers for larger super telephoto lenses, and liked them both. This is the first time that I have tried a LensCoat lens cover for a smaller lens. I am really pleased this product. The fit is perfect, including access to lens switches. Not only does this provide protection to the lens, but the lens is actually easier to handle (i.e., less slippery) especially in colder weather. I liked this product so much that I bought a few other LensCoat lens covers for some of my other lenses.

[0.17 lb] I have the new D500 and have had issues with my 80-400 VR ii lenses and wanted a prime long lens that I can carry and as I mainly handhold, I don't want something too big. The 300/4 VR does this in spades. I had rented it when it first came out and tho it was nice, I felt my 80-400 was quicker on AF on my d7100. The d500 is a game changer tho. The lens Is fast, light and pin sharp. As I do mainly wildlife esp birds in flight, fast AF is critical. I used it with both 1.4 and 1.7tcs with good results esp. with no uv filter. These things have a negative effect on long lenses in my opinion. I have several good ones from both Hoya and B+R. If. You are serious about fast action photography with longer lenses, try taking these things off!

[0.17 lb] I have used both the predecessor 300mm f4 non VR and the 300mm f2.8 VR with my D810 and D4s and for each they served their purpose. The 300 2.8 was a magnificent lens, tack sharp, and worked with all 3 converters but was heavy. I do a lot of waterfowl and wildlife photography which can involve crawling around on my belly and laying in muddy swampy areas for hours. For me the 300 2.8 vs. 300 f4 non VR was an easy choice...just suck it up and carry the larger lens. At least until the new PF VR came out. Sure it is more expensive than its predecessor but for me it allows much more mobility for my type of shooting. The lens works as well as the 300 2.8 with teleconverters with the TC20 being a bit slower on auto focus but acceptable. The image quality is stunning. For one stop loss of light I will gladly sacrifice 6 extra pounds of lens.As an added benefit with the smaller size it meets the 8 or smaller lens requirement at Minute Maid park here in Houston so I can take it the ballpark and stick a TC in my pocket.Overall I have been very impressed.

[0.17 lb] I received a copy of this lens a few weeks ago, and, after using it on my Nikon D750 I found (like many others) that images with exposures in the 1/100-1/200 range were blurry when done with Nikon's VR system enabled. I exchanged that copy of the lens for another (thanks to B&H, this was an easy process). When the new copy arrived, I found that it did exactly the same ... So, why a 5-star rating? The reason is that Nikon came out with an update on the D750 firmware which fixed the issue for me, just a few days after I received the second copy of the lens. This problem is not really an issue with this particular lens, but seems to be caused or aggravated by their cameras, perhaps related to mirror shock or other issues. The good aspect is that this can apparently be effectively fixed with a firmware update. I have now used this lens extensively - it is a joy to use (the low eight and small size is simply amazing), and the images it generates are outstanding, both in terms of sharpness of in-focus objects, and in terms of bokeh. The VR is very effective, indeed.

[0.17 lb] I also have the Nikon 80-400 lens that's nice and sharp but somewhat heavy on my Nikon 750 and Nikon 7200. I wanted something for kayaking or hiking and this lens is perfect. I lose 100mm but with the Nikon1.4 III teleconverter, I'm at 420mm (or 630mm with 7200) so basically the same as the 80-400. I've paired it with the 1.7 teleconverter and still very sharp. I do feel it's sharper than my zoom which it should be and much much lighter.. I actually haven't used the zoom since I got this lens.

[0.17 lb] I am a full time pro with 30 years experience. I currently shoot with Nikon, but when digital came into the picture, shot with Canon for almost 5 years (2003-2007). My copy of this lens is outstanding. Three reasons why I am totally psyched with this lens. 1) Very lightweight 2) Sharp @f/4.0 and 3) Incredibly close focussing capability. While not a micro lens, when focussed at it's min distance (4'6), the field of view is approximately 3 x 5 inches. To me, this is incredibly useful. While others have reported VR issues at shutter speeds between 1/30 - 1/160, my copy displays zero image degradation at those or any speeds. Build quality appears to be great. At the date of this review, May 2, 2015, I've owned this lens for 5 days and have make hundreds of images and the lens has been a valuable tool. Should anything change, I'll update.

[0.17 lb] First of all the fit is awesome! Secondly the Lens Coat cover offers protection against dings and scrapes which is why I purchased this cover. Although the lens is sharp and fast, it is not metal so damage is a concern and I must admit that I am not as steady as I once was. This cover offers a practical solution to protecting the lens. I often use this lens while shooting in a bird blind and often bump the lens while putting down. Thanks Lens Coat and B&H!

[0.17 lb] Just received this lens from B&H last week and went about testing it extensively given the previously noted issues. Wow! First tested the VR on a Nikon D810 and found it to be working perfectly without the earlier described issues. Tested quite a bit at shutter speeds from 1/20 to 1/200 and it worked amazingly well. Ditto for other shutter speeds above 1/200. Very sharp hand held images down to 1/20 second! Next onto a tripod for focus testing and found it to be spot on and required no fine tuning. Then out into the world with distant objects, birds in flight, moving targets such as cyclists, etc, and it functioned superbly. Images were super sharp at all apertures throughout the frame with very little chromatic aberration and distortion. The quality of the bokeh was quite good even considering the fresnel elements. Finally, the unbelievable light weight of this lens made hand holding as easy as with a 24-70mm. No need for a tripod at all. Glad I wasn't an early purchaser given the VR issues but it seems those are resolved. Great addition to the line-up!
