If iyou need to use strenght to pull the zoom out, I would recomend getting the lens checked or exchange. In thios case you may also hear low noises when the lens is trying to focus or by simply turning the rings on the lens.

A: Hello Deborah...while I consider the 16-35mm f/4L to be an excellent wide angle lens, I would have several concerns about this lens for astrophotography. The f/4 fixed aperture will require that you use either a high ISO, or an extended exposure time. Using a high ISO will result in unwanted grain and an extended exposure time would possibly cause star trails and/or coma. I would suggest using a faster lens, at least f/2.8.
