Its 1.2 density creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing you to photograph with a wider aperture or slower shutter speed without overxposing your image. A: Since both sides have identical coating, it doesn't matter which way the filter is facing. We've taken them out on several shoots without noticing a difference either way.
