The EMPIRICAL LABS Distressor EL8 Analog Knee Compressorfrom EMPIRICAL LABS Distressor EL8 Analog Knee Compressoris a professional compressor that features a wide range of controls and feature set for studio or live applications. The Distressor offers a warm, vintage sound by using a custom designed gain control circuit. All eight of the Distressor's curves are distinctive, from the 1:1 mode that simply warms up signal with low order harmonics without intentional compression, to the Nuke setting, a brick wall limiting curve that shines on live drum room mics. Some curves have different circuitry, and are effectively different compressors. The 10:1 Opto ratio uses separate detector circuitry to emulate the oldest light controlled devices, such as the LA-2A.

The Distressor features three modes that color the signal, even without compression. These extended audio modes were designed to allow emulation of some very old vintage compressors and limiters, and let the Distressor deliver a classic knee sound all its own by providing user programmable, warm harmonic distortion. In addition to the basic distortion mode, Distort 2 emphasizes tube-like 2nd order harmonics, while in the Distort 3 setting the distortion becomes dominated by 3rd harmonics more closely resembling tape. Two HP filters, with one in the audio path, one in the detector path, are also available to help with low frequencies that can cause pumping and breathing.

Improved noise specs and performance

Three audio modes provide user programmable, warm harmonic distortion. Emphasized tubelike, 2nd harmonic in clean and Distort 2 mode. In Distort 3 mode, the distortion becomes dominated by 3rd harmonic, more similar to tape

A 1% LED and a Redline (3%) LED providing no hard clipping until a few dB past Redline

High mid-band emphasis and low-cut keeps the low sum and difference frequencies from pumping the upper frequencies of source material

From the 1:1 mode that warms up signal with low order harmonics without intentional compression, to the Nuke setting, each curve has its own personality, and release shape. The 10:1 Opto ratio uses separate circuitry to emulate the oldest light controlled devices, such as the LA-2A

They're large for easy readability and repeatable settings, and go to 10.5

Allows speed in setting tape and live mix levels

Extra fuse provided inside unit

Runs cool, allowing cabinet to be sealed without heat vents and features long life components

All contacts doubled up for maximum reliability with no internal audio connectors

The XLRs are fully balanced with a transformerless design (pin 2 hot, changeable by user to pin 3 hot)

All metal film and Roederstein resistors in the audio path

[0.02 and 20%] We are using this unit with two wireless lavalier mics used by trainers presenting in hotel ballrooms and consider it a bargain for how much performance improvement it has yielded.

After watching a few YouTube videos I was able to configure some defaults for vocals and then fine tune using the meters and my ears.

We have much better control now and fewer requests to make it louder but also not feed back while the person is standing in front of the PA while also making it not so loud while the presenter is shouting GET READY TO ROCK AND ROLLLLLL! or whatever at the beginning of the event.

[11.84 lb] This compressor is exactly what I was looking for. Transparent, smooth, and powerful. The double-knee system is unique and sounds terrific. The auto-attack & release are so good I never turn them off. Lastly, the ability to add subtle harmonics to the output gain adds that little bit of glisten.

[DC coupled] I wanted to try a compressor to pick up my low tones and knock down some of the peaks while singing live. The only other compressor I had used was a 1 knob on the XENYX1832 mixer. I paired this with a Pro MPA2 pre-amp also an ART product, and been very pleased with it for vocals and an electric guitar. I had been looking around at compressors for a while, and finally just ordered it up. I am glad I did and would do it again. No complaints at all, and have recommended it to my friends already. This was my first purchase from B&H, but will not be my last. Fast delivery even though it was Christmas time. Packaging was also very good.

[11.84 lb] The WA76 is not supposed to sound exactly like the modern UA 1176LN as another review has highlighted. The WA76 is an exact replica of the Urei 1176 revision D that was produced in the early 1970s. The current UA 117LN is an amalgamation of revisions C, D, & E. These revisions have minor differences in circuitry dealing with low noise and distortion. The WA76 and UA 1176LN are essentially the same beast, but since they are produced with slightly different circuitry designs, one will hear very subtle sonic variations between the two. Which one you like more is a matter of preference.

[DC coupled] This device works great in leveling out our audio, and gets rid of the low level room noise. Our podcast post-processing has gone to almost zero.

[DC coupled] If you are looking for a great compressor, try this one. It has everything I need, it's easy to setup all the settings. I'm using it for recording and on the final master of my songs BUT I never use a lot of db reduction... just enough to my ears. If you set the threshold a little too much, it will be over compressed. But when it's used in the good way, it sounds really great !

[11.84 lb] I bought this compressor, at the recommendation of a friend, to level out the extreme voice volume fluctuation of my pastor. I have been extremely pleased with the result...exactly what I wanted. The pastor can now be clearly heard all throughout the chapel without me having to try and manually adjust his volume ups and downs. It takes a little time to set this up to get just the right wireless mic input into the compressor, but the result is noise free and evenly adjusted volume. On the recording, I hear no noise and the quality is excellent. I received instant comments from many worshippers on the improvement. I could not be happier!!

[11.84 lb] Needed a compressor that would tame dynamics of a singer in a live setting with huge dynamic range. This worked wonderfully.
