The Tiffen 52mm Black Diffusion FX 5 Filterdiffuses strong light entering the lens and produces a glowing effect. While the resulting image appears softer and ethereal, there is little loss of clarity or detail. This filter works by diffusing the light entering the lens with small aberrations; by spreading the light more evenly, a soft glow is created rather than the sharp, well-defined image when shooting without a filter. This filter has a 5 density, providing the greatest amount of softening.

Tiffen filters are made using ColorCore technology, a process that involves laminating the filter substrate between 2 pieces of optical glass, grinding flat to a tolerance of 1/10,000th of an inch, and then mounting to precision metal rings.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. I've been searching everywhere for a variable ND filter for my Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera. Is this the one that will fit? It fits on the end of the lens right? I have an Olympus 40-150mm 1:4-5.6. then it has a circle with a line through it and a 58 by it. thats the filter thread, right? so if i have an olympus 17mm 1:2.8 pancake lens with a circle with a line through it and a 37 next to it, thats a 37 thread so I'll need this one, right: Polaroid 37mm Neutral Density Fader Filter

A: That is correct. The Olympus 40-150mm f/4-5.6 accepts 58mm filters, and the Olympus 17mm f/2.8 will accept the 37mm filter.

Q: 2. Will this ND Filter work well with the Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 II Lens? I am unsure if I will get the notorious X-Pattern when blocking the light at 8-Stops, because as mentioned it is a very wide lens (11-16mm). Does anyone have experience? I would buy the lens and the filter together, it seems a good bundle for land- and seascape.

A: Thin version, not for the x pattern, but because the thick version comes into view on wide angle lenses 24mm.

Q: 3. Which camera/lens brands do these filters can be used with? I have a Canon EOS Rebel T6

A: This filter kit will work with any camera lens which has 58mm filter threads

Q: 4. Works fine with blackmagic pocket 6k? Cause some filters make the image more REDish because the sensor. So, this filter will make the image REDish or no? Thank You

A: I do not see any color cast issues with this filter and never leave home without it. I use this filter for many situations with Canon 1DX 50mm 1.2, e.g., wide aperture during daylight or long exposure. My son uses this filter with Sony A7III Zeiss 50mm 1.4 to shoot video when limited to 1/50th shutter. Great filter; very versatile.

Q: 5. Which strength do you recommend in between 1/4 and 1/2 for subtle effect to use on 50mm and 85mm lenses in everyday photography?

A: For a subtle look, I would recommend a 1/8 or a 1/4.

Q: 6. If the lens I am purchasing is a 50mm would I need the 52mm filters?

A: Ashley, please check the filter thread diameter specifications for the lens you are purchasing. B&H lists this in the specifications for each lens. There is no way to determine the correct filter thread given the information provided.

Q: 7. Do these introduce any color cast?

A: Neutral density filters do not cause any color cast or affect the color of an image, but rather, darken an image.

Q: 8. Hi, i didn’t receive the said equipment yet

A: Please call our customer service department for product eta at 800-221-5743.

Q: 9. Will these filters cause vignetting on a 12mm Rokinon f2 lens (mirror less)?

A: Hi, I have used 14mm and 8mm Rokinon lenses (which are fantastic by the way) but there would be no way to attach these filters onto them because the lens curves out, and there were no threads on mine so I'll assume there's no threads on yours either. Because of the fish-eye character of the lens using a larger 4 ND glass in a holder may work for the center area but would vignette on the edges of the frame. Good luck.

Q: 10. What size lens cap does this filter need?. I know it is larger then 77 mm as the manufacturersays it was built to avoid vignetting.

A: I also purchased a 77mm and a normal lens cap does not work, but a Kaiser 90mm push on lens cap will fit over the outside of the filter. This is not the ideal situation, but it is a lot better than nothing.

[52 mm] One of the best portrait filters I have ever used.Skin tones are softened beautifully, small blemishes and wrinkles disappear while leaving everything sharp.

[52 mm] Totally awesome! Pretty much the closest filter to the Alexa look!
Very subtle, doesn't affect colors, and attenuate skin blemishes while retaining overall sharpness. Perfect to refining the cinematic look of your digital camera! This filter is always on my lenses as my default look.

[4.15 x 3.4 x 1"] I bought the filter for two specific shoots. Both went well and I have no complaints. I used the filter on my 77mm Canon 17-40mm L for shoots early morning and late evening in the Fall Colors and the results were fantastic. Would recommend to others. Didn't find anything I didn't like.

[52 mm] I own two of these for two camera shoots. They produce a nice subtle softening for skin and reduction in overall contrast. Not too much, just enough to take the edge of digital cinema cameras.

[0.2 lb] I bought it for video to have smoother images but I discovered that I also like it very much for portrait photography to smooth skin without having the dreamy halo effect. To my taste, the effect is very subttle, though...

[52 mm] I love these filters, and I have the FX2 on all of my lenses for wedding videography. I like how it softens faces and reduces fine textures without adding any halation or losing contrast. My only gripe would be the artifacts in the filter are pretty noticeable in the bokeh or when the lens flares, but that's easy enough to work around.

[4.15 x 3.4 x 1"] This filter performs as advertised. It has a quality finish and threads perfectly in my Nikon glass.

[52 mm] If you take shots of people over 35, this filter should be standard issue. Just buy it!

[52 mm] I have mainly been using the filter to soften the portraits I take because I print straight from the memory card without using computer touch-up. I'm extremely pleased with the softening filter effects. I do make adjustments in my camera to work with the filter as in the sharpness and the coloring to suit my taste for the end results that I'm looking for in the particular portrait that I'm shooting. The results of the filter are very minor but to me that is the way it should be - just enough to take a second look at the photo without realizing why you took a second look.... The camera lens had problems AFing, the photos looked blurry more than not. I tried hard to make it work for me but NO GO.Also it is hard to find much info and samples of the filter's performance on the internet.I still plan to experiment further with the filter on other photo ops besides portraits. But I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys the challenge of producing their end results from the camera and not the computer. Thanks for reading this; I hope it is helpful.Mary Grace@
