This 77mm Tiffen 85/ND 2-Stop Filter 77mmblends both an amber color conversion 85 and a 0.6 neutral density filter. The ND filtration provides a 2-stop exposure reduction for darkening the entire image in order to photograph with a wider aperture or slower shutter speed than normally required. The 85 filtration covers the entire filter plane and converts the color temperature to 3400K for use with type A (tungsten) film.

This filter is made using ColorCore technology, a process that involves laminating the filter substrate between 2 pieces of optical glass, grinding flat to a tolerance of 1/10,000th of an inch, and then mounting to precision metal rings.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Can I mount this on top of a circular polarizing filter? Is there a downside to doing that?

A: The Tiffen VND filter consists of two circular polarizing filters...two CP filters together create the VND effect. Mounting this on top of a circular polarizing filter may cause some undersired effects such as cross polarization, vignetting in addition to difficulty adjusting the two filters as both turn and are adjusted by hand... if you mount the CP, then the VND it would be difficult to control both as they are turning. We recommend using a straight ND and then a CP instead.

Q: 2. Can anyone tell me what the dot markings represent in amount of stops of light being reduced? Is the min setting 2 stops immediately and what does each progressive dot on the scale represent in stops of light reduced? Are they fractions of stops or whole stops? (I assume 'max' equals 8 stops of light reduced) Thanks for any feedback in advance!

A: Justin... the dots on the filter ring are just reference points and do not relate to actual stop values. At the MIN setting you are at 2 stops, at the MAX setting you are at 8 stops. Between those two points there is no way to determine the exact stop value. If you need to know the exact stop value we also manufacture solid ND filters in a variety of stop values.

Q: 3. I have the Sony Zeiss 24-70mm F4. It says on the Lens 67mm. Does that mean I need a size 67mm ND Filter to fit?

A: Well as others have indicated, 67 mm is the correct size for the lens, you are asking about. while this is true, some times it is more cost efficient to get a larger size filter and an adaptor ring. When buying my natural density filter, I chose one that fit on the largest diamiter lens in my travel kit, so that I could use the filter on all my lenses, with the only added cost/weight of the adaptors. This also alows for a larger filter to be used on my wider angle lenses, reducing any vignetting that the filter might cause on the wide angle lenses. Vignetting can be a problem on wide angle lenses as the Variable Neutral Density Filter tends to be fairly thick and there for may caused some vignetting.

Q: 4. Does the 52mm fit on my 18-55mm Nikon D5600 lens?

A: You can use the lens to filter size tool on the Tiffen website to determine this information: https://tiffen.com/pages/filter-collection

Q: 5. Whats the outer diameter for the 82mm VND?

A: Tiffen 82mm Variable Neutral Density Filter has a 98mm outer diameter.

Q: 6. Considering this filter for the Sigma 50-100mm f/1.8 DC HSM Art lens, so vignetting should not be an issue for a telephoto. However, lack of front threads or provision for a lens hood is an issue. Is there a solution?

A: Hey Danny I haven't found a solution for a good, but never look hard after a solution either. I use it with my L series zooms and I can't never use lens hood with it. It is one of the smallest nd out there but still not small enough. Hope it helps

Q: 7. Does this filter work on a sony 70-200mm lens?

A: It depends which Sony 70-200 it is. If it is Sony FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS II Lens then Tiffen 77mm Variable Neutral Density Filter will work because that lens does accept 77mm filters.

Q: 8. I have a Canon MIII. Will this Tiffen 77VND work with a 50mm lens?

A: Whether this filter will fit your lens depends on the exact 50mm lens. The front diameter of the lens is generally printed on the front or stamped behind the lens cap.

Q: 9. Is there a way to make them fit in the Rokinon lenses? I heard Rokinon lenses doesn't have a way to add filters.

A: All Tiffen screw in filters require filter threads. We make the VND filter in 52, 58, 62, 67, 72, 77 and 82 mm sizes. We recommend you contact Rokinon for specifications regarding their lenses

Q: 10. Whats the filter size for the outside thread?

A: The Tiffen Variable ND Filters do not have front threads for attaching other lens accessories like a lens cap or screw on lens hood.

[0.2 lb] Variable NDs can be a lifesaver, and a headache at the same time. I purchased the 82mm and adapted it down to my 77mm thread lenses to avoid the uneven coloring that can happen towards the edges of variable NDs. Having done that, I can say this filter has even coloring and shading across the whole image. I do reccomend purchasing a larger filter and stepping it down, even if it's only a 5mm difference. I did not do that with another Tiffen Variable ND I own, and it does create variances in how much it darkens the image towards the edges. If you do turn the filter and watch the image on your camera screen, you will notice a slight color shift magenta and then blue (depending on which way you turn it). If I don't watch the image while I turn it though, I don't notice the color shift otherwise, even in editing later. It is very subtle. All NDs will slightly color tint the image, it's just a matter of how much. So, again, this one does have a tint also, but it is almost negligible, and I wouldn't let that deter purchasing it. The build quality is great, and the threads align perfectly. I would purchase another one of these again.

[77 mm] I do video work and this filter is awesome. I shoot on the Sony a7iii at 24fps and with this filter I can shoot Slog3 (with a minimum ISO 800) at a shutter speed of 1/50 and have my Sigma Art 50mm wide open at 1.4 IN BROAD DAYLIGHT without blowing out my highlights. This is however, putting the filter at "max." If I were to turn the filter more then it would get darker but with a heavy vignette and the weird "x" pattern which is unavoidable with variable nd's. Because of this, I would personally not use any faster glass with this filter; I would have to buy a much stronger filter for an f1.2 or f1. That being said, it fits my needs great! Also be warned that because it is a variable ND, you can get the same gradient in the sky as you would with a normal polarizer filter.

[Aluminum] I used the Tiffen 77mm Variable Neutral Density Filter for the first time photographing the Stony Kill Falls in Kerhonkson, NY at the Minnewaska State Park. The photos came out outstanding. Since it was a variable filter, I was able to experiment with different settings. The filter is well made and easy to use. The settings are clearly marked. I am very satisfied with this product. B&H gave me a nice discount on the purchase.

[0.2 lb] This high quality filter makes adjustments to exposure very easy, especially when shooting video. It allows the shutter speed to remain constant, which is recommended for video. A simple turn of the filter smoothly transitions the exposure to a lighter or darker image to compensate for the ever changing outdoor light.
