Equipped with a large and intuitive 2.7" color touchscreen LCD and now featuring built-in radio triggering for the 2.4 GHz Phottix Strato II wireless system, the Sekonic LiteMaster Pro L-478DR-U-PX Light Meter Phottix Strato IIfrom Sekonic LiteMaster Pro L-478DR-U-PX Light Meter Phottix Strato IIwill make incident metering for ambient and flash light super simple. The 4-channel system also has separate selection between 4 groups with measured values maintained for ratio determination.

Notable for the L-478 light meter series is the large color touchscreen, which allows for fast control over settings for both ambient and flash metering. The meter is quite capable as well, able to function within a range of -2 to 22.9 EV at ISO 100. And, for the current crop of hybrid shooters this model expands on its standard stills functions with two distinct video modes: Cine and HD Cine. These settings give access to frame rate selection from 1-1,000 fps as well as shutter angle settings from 1-358° as well as ISO 850 for Canon cinema cameras.

Guaranteeing the best possible performance is a suite of functions and features that will ensure users have the best tools available to them. Among these is a flash analyzing function that uses ambient and flash simultaneously to allow for shooters to dial in their preferred mix. Also, using the included Data Transfer Software users will be able to do Exposure Profiling for their camera by using the optional 5° viewfinder, showing dynamic range limits and knowing that you will have an accurate exposure. Alongside this is a Filtration Compensation Mode that allows for the meter to account for filter factor, which can now be done at up to 12 EV for landscape shooters using high-density ND filters. Other features include a contrast function for comparing brightness, a memory mode for 9 readings, and illuminance or luminance measurement.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. What is the difference between the L-478DR and the L-478DR-U?

A: To put it simply, the U at the end of the model number means that is for the US market.

Q: 2. Is this meter compatible with Pocket Wizard Plus 3?

A: Dennis, I would say so.

Q: 3. can this meter be used with the elinchrombrx500 ?

A: Yes, and the older Ranger Rx, Quadra Ranger, as well as the New Skyport Receiver for Speed Lights!

Q: 4. Is this meter compatible with radio poppers?

A: This is compatible with radio poppers, it requires the pocketwizard tranceivers but it can be done. Read the article on Wireless Flash Power Control in the article attached. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/explora/news/new-sekonic-litemaster-pro-l-478d-and-l-478dr-light-meters

Q: 5. Can a Godox AD600 attached with a pocket wizard 3 be triggered and still use my Godox trigger while activated ?

A: Yes, you can trigger the AD600 with the wizard.

Q: 6. How well will this work with the Indra 500

A: It does a fine job. You must set the Indra to receive Strato II signals. It would be best to use a Strato II Transmitter as it has ABCD groups. But you could also use an Odin Transmitter which has ABC groups. There is no power control as the Phottix system is not set up to allow it.

Q: 7. Can I use it wth other Flash units in the same as the non Eilenchrom version? In case I want to add Eilenchrom lighting later.

A: I'm sorry, but I don't know. I don't have the Elinchrome verson.

Q: 8. Hi,do you believe it would be usefull to buy the Elinchrom HS skyport as a complement to the Sekonic 478dr ? As all I see is the High speed sync feature that the skyport would provide. Other than that I believe they have more or less the same functionality. Thanks

A: Yes, you should decide whether you need hi speed sync or not. For that it's wonderful. You really don't need the HS if not. However if you use the regular Skyport now the HS is so much nicer.

Q: 9. Does this device measure for shutter speeds between 1/125 & 1/250 (such as 1/160)?

A: The metered shutter speed ranges for the Sekonic LiteMaster Pro L-478DR-U Light Meter for PocketWizard System is listed as 1/64,000 to 30 Minutes (1, 1/2, 1/3-Step Increments), Plus 1/400, 1/200. It depends on which increment you select as to which shutter speeds would be available. If 1/3-step increments is selected, then 1/160-sec shutter speed would be available. Refer to the instruction manual included with the light meter.

Q: 10. How to read candle per square meter (cd/m) using this unit?

A: Please see user manual: Ambient light Luminance (cd/m2 ) mode (by reflected light measurement using with accessory viewfinder available as separate purchase) Displays brightness values in cd/m2 units.

[Cordless, Radio] The light meter is the exact tool you need to measure accurately the light in studio (Light or contrast measurement). The remote control of Elinchrom flashes works perfectly with BRX500 and D Lite RX4 flashes. The control of the flashes located from the measurement point is extremely easy and convenient. The tuning is achieved quickly and efficiently with single or multiple light sources. The Sekonic interface with modern colour touch screen is effective and simple to use. I started with a L-308S that is cheaper, but there is no comparison. If the budget is available, don't hesitate, the L 478 offers an easy and accurate measure of both the source itself and of the contrast you can't get so easily with the L-308S.

[1/1000] This is a perfect tool for portrait work to ensure your exposure is accurate. It takes all the guess work out of your camera's reading and it's been spot on for exposure. I would recommend it to anyone who's serious about getting better images and doing less post processing.

[1/1000] if you own the Elinchrom ELB400 you have to have this light meter because shutter speed flash light can measure up to 1/1,000 sec.

[1/1000] Light meters don't seem to get very many updates or new models from month to month or even year to year as do camera models. The original L-478 model is about 6 or so years old.

This is a valuable tool for those who shoot either film (SLR) or digital. If you shoot portraits this is the perfect, fairly reasonably priced tool. I use it with my old Mamiya RZ67 Pro and a few other old manual cameras. With the scarcity and price of film, you don't want to miss a shot due to improper lighting exposure. This model works very well with the PocketWizard system. You can set up your speedlights or strobes and both test and adjust each different light to your needs. This saves valuable time and money. You can use the light meter as both a remote trigger for the lights as well as the camera shutter, as well as make all the changes to the lights directly on the light meter screen. If you have favorite lighting zones and setups is a breeze with the settings being saved into the light meter for quick recall and use. It is fairly complex and there are still settings I haven't used.

The meter provides for an optional 5-degree viewfinder attachment for reflective metering. This allows for long distance measurements and I have found it very accurate and helpful especially for landscape and architectural use. Get 4-5 different readings from various spots, hit average and you have your own external multi-meter.

Lastly, it's great to have Sekonic work together with several lighting and radio-transmitter companies. PocketWizard was the choice for me and it has made my life so much easier with lighting. Shooting film has never been easier and the digital mirrorless world is a breeze.

[1/1000] I wanted(needed) a new flash meter so had a look at several options.
Sekonic was always high on my list.

With the PocketWizard integration it became a no brainer.
Its fast and SIMPLE to use. Before switching all lighting over to PW, I had some using a cyber controller. ;-) NO comparison in speed or ease of use...or flexibility. Those have been switched to PW also.

And thats just the PW part. The meter itself is great. Simple to use and being about the size of a cell phone its easy to read.

Changing modes is dead easy as well. Everything about it makes me WANT to use it...so it wont stay on the shelf like a previous meter.

[0.785 lb] Wonderful instrument. I have a manual Sekonic, but if I went a few weeks without using it, I had to figure it out all over again. This L478 DR is so fast to make a change, it's actually fun.

[Cordless, Radio] Easy to use. Even though I had it for a short time, it has already proven to be the best user friendly tools in my bag.

[0.785 lb] I have several kinds of Elinchrom strobes and this new meter is not only spot on with it's exposure readings but now I can control everything on all of my lights right from the meter. I can turn the modeling light on or off, raise of lower light intensity, and so much more. I gave it a once over yesterday with 3 back to back portrait shoots using different heads and setups. I was able to move smoothly and professionally while getting spot on exposures every time.
