The reason that this is the most common is that most professional lenses have 77mm filter threads. After you screw on the adaptor ring onto the lens, the filter holder clips onto the ring.Photographers purchase an adaptor ring that matches the size of their lens with the largest front filter threads. If you also have lenses with smaller front filter threads, you purchase a step-up ring for each of those lenses.
