This 6 x 6" Tiffen 81EF/ND Filter 6x6" 3-Stopblends both an amber light-balancing 81EF and a 0.9 neutral density filter. The ND filtration provides a 3-stop exposure reduction for darkening the entire image in order to photograph with a wider aperture or slower shutter speed than normally required. The 81EF filtration covers the entire filter plane and lessens the color temperature by 650K, enabling the ability to attain 3200K balance when the prevailing light source is 3850K.
This filter is made using ColorCore technology, a process that involves laminating the filter substrate between two pieces of optical glass and grinding flat to a tolerance of 1/10,000th of an inch. This filter measures 6 x 6" / 152.4 x 152.4mm.

Combination of both an amber light-balancing 81EF and an ND filter.
0.9 ND filter darkens the image, allowing you to photograph with a longer shutter speed or wider aperture than normally required.
81EF light-balancing filter decreases color temperature and provides a warming effect.
Related Questions and Answers
Q: 1. Can anyone tell me what the dot markings represent in amount of stops of light being reduced? Is the min setting 2 stops immediately and what does each progressive dot on the scale represent in stops of light reduced? Are they fractions of stops or whole stops? (I assume 'max' equals 8 stops of light reduced) Thanks for any feedback in advance!
A: Justin... the dots on the filter ring are just reference points and do not relate to actual stop values. At the MIN setting you are at 2 stops, at the MAX setting you are at 8 stops. Between those two points there is no way to determine the exact stop value. If you need to know the exact stop value we also manufacture solid ND filters in a variety of stop values.
Q: 2. Does it have IR protection ?
A: It is not rated for IR, This is a Neutral Density filter, but I yet have to come up an IR issue using it with my Sony A7RII. If you have IR issues with your sensor often like color shifts I suggest you correct those with a proper IR filter first. A Variable Neutral Density filter works by juxtaposing 2 polarizing filters so there is a highly modified light spectrum left, I wonder if you should be worring about IR at the end. Enjoy. This filter is a game changer specially on travel and run and gun.
Q: 3. I want to use this filter on Schneider Super-Angulon XL 5.6/58mm lenses. (approximately 17~17.5mm equivalent to 35mm). And I want to use it mainly in the 2~6 stops range. In this case, will the "X" pattern appear?
A: I have used this with no problems. On a Sigma 10-20mm and bracketing shots in Manual and Aperture priority.. Never had any Side affects.
Q: 4. Will this work in the lee 4x4 filter holder?
A: Tiffen ND filters are 4mm thick, while Lee filters are 2mm thick. This will work in the Lee holder as long as you have the one which you can modify to accept 4mm filters. Tiffen will be releasing a filter holder designed to hold two 4mm filters within the next few months. Keep an eye out for the Pro 100 Series Filter Holder, coming soon.
Q: 5. For the 77mm version, is the reported green cast, X uneven fading AND/OR image degradation (softness, etc) starting to appear more easily in 24mm focal length or wider (on Full Frame cameras)? And are those issues appearing WITHIN the Start and End marks? At what point aprox.?Thank you!!
A: What green cast are you referring to? There are no known issues with green cast with the Tiffen VND filter, perhaps you are referring to the IRVND?The X Bar effect is a function of optical physics when combining two circular polarizing filters to make a VND. This effect happens with all manufacturers VND filters and does not indicate a problem with the filter. The X Bar effect typically appears when shooting at wide angle and at higher density settings on the VND filter, you will see this effect appear sooner with a full frame camera than with a cropped sensor camera. To correct this look through your viewfinder and reduce the density on the VND filter, change your focal length by zooming in or a combination of both until the effect goes away. The X Bar effect can happen within the Min and Max settings, especially at darker densities on full frame cameras. You should never adjust the VND outside the Min and Max settings.
Q: 6. how many filters are in this kit?
A: This is one filter.
Q: 7. Is the end of this filter threaded?
A: The side of this ND filter that faces outward, away from the camera lens to which it is attached, is NOT threaded.
Q: 8. Hi i am planning to buy sony 10-18mm f4 lens and just wondering which tiffen ND filter will fit in to that lens. Any idea which filter should i buy for this lens. ?
A: The Sony E 10-18mm f/4 OSS lens has a 62mm front filter thread.
Q: 9. How many stops will this filter give me compared to the 58CP filter?"
A: This Tiffen 72mm Variable Neutral Density Filter can reduce exposure from between 2 stops to 8 stops; the Tiffen 58mm Circular Polarizing Filter will reduce exposure about 1.2 stops.
Q: 10. What size lens cap does this filter need?. I know it is larger then 77 mm as the manufacturersays it was built to avoid vignetting.
A: I also purchased a 77mm and a normal lens cap does not work, but a Kaiser 90mm push on lens cap will fit over the outside of the filter. This is not the ideal situation, but it is a lot better than nothing.
