The Sanken CSS-50 Stereo Shotgun Mic with 3 Modesfrom Sanken CSS-50 Stereo Shotgun Mic with 3 Modesis a three-diaphragm, electret condenser short shotgun microphone that uses pressure gradient technology and supercardioid diaphragms to offer three distinct operational modes. The microphone is suitable for capturing audio in video, broadcast TV, and film applications.

The shotgun mic is small and lightweight with three switchable modes, mono, normal (stereo), and wide (stereo) to satisfy the various needs of location and studio recording solutions. In normal mode, the stereo angle is approximately 115°, and the microphone picks up the targeted sound as well as extremely accurate stereo localization.

Other modes include mono, which provides sharp directivity, and is maintained over a wide frequency range for the aimed frontal sound sources. It picks up the chosen sound source clearly in noisy ambient situations or in a long reverberation space.

Finally, wide mode is designed for stereo recording of sound effects where dialogue will be dubbed in at a later date. This mode allows for a wider 140° pickup pattern compared to conventional M-S microphones, which have a maximum of 127°.

For Video, Broadcast TV, and Film    Three Distinct Operation Modes    Mono Mode for Sharp Shotgun Directivity    Stereo Mode for Precise Localization    Wide Stereo Mode Expands to 140°    5-Pin XLR Output Connector

The CSS-50 is Sanken's easy-to-operate and flexible stereo shotgun for use in broadcasting and film. It is a 3-diaphragm electret condenser mic that offers innovative technology in a short, practical form factor

The CSS-50 offers three distinct operation modes. Mono mode offers sharp shotgun directivity, normal (stereo) mode provides precise stereo localization, and wide (stereo) mode allows for expanded 140° stereo, which is ideal for cinematic ambience and sound effects

Thanks to Sanken's original thin square capsule design, the capsules can be stacked in the short sound tube, providing performance equivalent to the CSS-5 in a more compact body. The high-performance electret condenser capsules are equivalent in response to DC-biased capsules

Q: 1. I need to shout live music performances in varying stage and acoustics. Want hi quality sound using a Sony XHR-NX80, Best Mic?

A: You can use the Sennheiser MKH418S Stereo Shotgun Microphone with your camera if you want an on-camera mic to record live music.

Q: 2. Does this have a low battery indicator?

A: The Polsen SCL-1080 Shotgun Microphone, Camera- or Boompole-Mount with Interchangeable Cables, Normal and Tele Modes does not have a low-battery indicator.

Q: 3. can i use this mic for my pc for streaming on twitch?

A: If you have a PC with a mic port, yes you can connect the Polsen SCL-1080 directly to that port but it will not sound very good. It would be best to use an audio interface with it for better results.

Q: 4. Does it include the y cable?

A: No, the Sennheiser MKH418S does not include the Sennheiser ACS5 5-pin XLR Female to Dual XLR Male Y Cable (BH #SEACS5).

Q: 5. are all five wires connected end to end?

A: Yes all 5 pins are connected end to end. We use ours for extension headset cable and it works great.

Q: 6. Can I simply attach this to a shoe mount on the FX3 and use it?

A: Yes. The CS-M1 will work with the FX3

Q: 7. Does this work with phantom power?

A: No, the Polsen SCL-1080 uses a single AA battery for power. It does not work with phantom or plug-in power.

Q: 8. How long is the included XLR cable?

A: Synco has not provided us with the length of the included cable, but it is a very short cable meant for connecting an on-camera microphone to the camera.

Q: 9. What is the lowest profile / minimal shoe mount that will work with this mic? I want to attach it to the FX3 for Vlog'ing and want something small.

A: A mount such as BH #ROSM3R Rode SM3-R Camera Shoe Shockmount is a quality option that marries the desired characteristics of low profile, built-in shoe adapter, and shock absorption for use with the Sanken CS-M1 Moisture-Resistant Ultracompact Shotgun Microphone: https://bhpho.to/3K2vXlW

Q: 10. Shorter than 25 ft of 5-pin XLR cables?

[Gray] Went to NAB to compare mics, specifically. Listened to Sennheiser, Sanken, Shure and this was my favorite. Had for over a year, still love it.

[Gray] I am completely blown away by the side / rear rejection this mic offers. I was also impressed with the reach and the very natural sound. A windscreen would have been nice, but I guess most of these will live in a blimp most of the time so it's an understandable packaging choice for Sanken. Have only used for several weeks so I can't speak to durability, but I can say I will hopefully be using this mic for years.

[Solid-State] I started out with borrowed Sennheiser shotguns, that were nice but had a destinct sweet spot that made switching between multiple sources a hassle. Then I bought a Rode ntg3 that was great but usually sounded just a bit farther away than it was. Just bought this Sanken and I have not put it down. It has the right amount of boost when aimed properly at the source without an ubnoxious sweet spot, great clarity and warmth, and the uniqe pattern on the tip gives it a natural compresion by favoring the mid frecuencies.

[Gray] I had one Sanken CS-2 and two Rhodes. The Sanken is so clear it does not mix well with the Rhodes so I bought a second. Best mic I have ever used. I use it as a second channel to give me redundancy.

[48 V] One of a special microphone. Very low self noise and clean XY stereo seperation, I mainly use it to be able to isolate particular sounds in a stereo image. 3 switches for wide / medium and mono. Works great for birds, dialogues, motors, riffles etc. Love the ability to switch to high quality mono for dialogues even tho some says it can sound quite « thin » on the low end. Mono is to me very nice and sounds about the same as CS3. On the oher side bulk and price might be a problem but overall I find it much handier than a M/S setup and allows me to « run and gun and scout ». The ability to record quiet atmosphere is also real there. As for putting this thing on a pole, it works (not so much handling noise) but its kinda Cumbersome.
I pair this beauty with a sound device 702, rycote 5L and Connbox4.

[Gray] I my typical work environment is usually sound mixing from indie short films to corporate shoots. I needed a decent upgrade and, dayumn, this mic was a great medium!! It captures VERY natural sound when it comes to dialogue. Picking up on sounds for field recording and ambience is a plus as well, even though it's a short shotgun it does carry across a pretty decent distance. Side and rear rejection isn't all too bad, better than what you'd get with an average under 1k mic. Nice and rugged, compact build. No disappointments here! Worth the investment, especially when you're looking to meet near other expensiv-O shotgun mic w/o your pocket hating your guts for overbearing it's limits ;)
