The Tiffen 86mm 81C Light Balancing Filterhelps to decrease the color temperature by 400K in order to warm the image slightly in order to match the color quality of illumination. When using an 81C filter, you will be able to attain 3200K balance when the prevailing light source is 3600K. The warming effect of this filter requires a 0.3-stop increase in exposure for normal results.

This filter is made using ColorCore technology, a process that involves laminating the filter substrate between 2 pieces of optical glass, grinding flat to a tolerance of 1/10,000th of an inch, and then mounting to precision metal rings.

[0.3 lb] The 77mm 81A filter is a much better choice then a standard UV lens. Creates warmer tones and brighter colors on overcast days or when shooting with an electronic flash. I'm extremely happy with this filter. I'm using it on a Nikkor 12-24 1:4 G ED Lens. 5

[0.3 lb] Like the odd 1-iron a golfer might bring, a 47a is not the everyday go-to of filters. That said, it emulates ortho film amazingly well, and for certain types of architectural photography, dramatically lightens, if not whitens skies while deeply defining most everything else. For instance, ironwork like the Eiffel Tower, a Ferris wheel, or an old, complicated bridge would become a nearly abstract study in lines with a filter like this. Or, if one wanted images evoking a late 19th Century feel, the ortho rendition would be prefect, especially with a soft focus, Lomographic, or pinhole lens. Shades of Matthew Brady! As for the Tiffen brand, there’s really none better. Never in 40 years of film photography have I heard of quality issues, except for a one-off problem once 20 years ago. They work and cost less, yet made in the USA! While the deep-pocketed Leica or Linhof user may sniff at them, this Mamiya RB photographeur, merely exclaims, “Tsk!”, or even, “Tchah!”, and continues merrily. Buy with great confidence! 5

[81C] Back when I shot nothing but film I used Tiffen filters and I'm happy that the quality is still here. There doesn't appear to be any strange diffraction in my shots even way out in the corners like I have found before in economically priced filters. 5

[0.3 lb] Really nice dark tone ; cuts the green and red really well and amplifies blue tones on b&w film. Perfect filter for RGB processing (with the green #58 and the red #25). The rigid plastic case that comes with it is also pretty useful. 5

[0.3 lb] I use the 81B all the time on my DSLRs with the WB set to daylight, for scenics where it cuts haze, for flash, backlit and in-shade people-pictures, and in overcast. The light-loss is small and the effect seldom if ever too warm. Incidentally other colour-correcting/-balancing filters are still useful, keeping the same daylight WB. That setting is right for interiors lit by incandescent or fluorescent, with an 80A or FL-Day over the lens. Those two really come into their own with mixed lighting, e.g. an interior with daylight coming through the windows. B&H's price was reasonable for this large size and the shipping prompt and efficient. 5
