A: In the normal vertical position they get pretty warm. The ventilation in these hard plastic cases is not great and on long runs they will get toasty. I run them horizontally and use a small fan ($15) and run them for hours. They stay cool and never tip over. They are great drives and never seem to wear out!

Q: 4. Does this drive have an indicator light to show when it is on or when it is in use?

A: The 8 TB drive does NOT have a light to indicate that it's on or in use. Also, it's quite a bit noisier than the previous My Book models. However, it's substantially faster. When formatted with exFat it writes as much as twice the speed of the older formats, but the exFat doesn't work with my media players.

A: I attached it to my mac using USB 3 and formatted it as Mac OS Extended (Journaled). There is no encryption...so that approach does work. However, I started with a blank drive so I wasn't concerned about wiping out data. If you've already got data on it you could transfer the data to another drive, format the MyBook drive and reload your data.

A: You can use it as an external drive. You can transfer files from the hard drive on the Mac to the external drive. Time Machine is simply a built-in optional backup feature ofyour Mac. When you connect an external hard drive directly to your Mac, you will be asked if you want to use the drive to back up with Time Machine.
